K-Mart goes hd-dvd exclusive

http://www.tvpredictions.com/kmart103107.htm

According to Toshiba, KMart will now be hd-dvd exclusive, although it will sell PS3's. This is the kind of retail deal that I have been saying hd-dvd should be making. Kmart will help provide that shelf space that is critical during this upcoming Christmas season.

So, not quite HD-DVD exclusive, then. Will they continue to sell Blu-Ray software (as they had Spiderman 3 for $6.99 on Blu-Ray yesterday)?

I think it goes along with the mentality that hd-dvd doesn't consider the ps3 an actual blu-ray player.

If HD-DVD wants to win, it needs a two part strategy.

1) Make cherry deals with retailers (consumer end).

2) Make cherry deals with studios (supplier end).

The trick is finding the right mix right now... Though I gotta say, isn't K-Mart pretty irrelevant now?

Basically same terms as BD/Target deal, it seems.

Also for others, keep in mind that Sears owns Kmart.

I'd say any exclusivity deal with retailers is beneficial at this point. I would also look for hd-dvd to make an exclusivity deal with Hollywood Video to get a brick and mortar presence established. But that's just me.

It all depends on product placement. The PS3 will be sitting next to the Wii and Xbox360, not by the DVD and HD-DVD players. That, and most people still consider the PS3 to be a gaming machine and not a movie machine.

Actually, K-Mart bought Sears http://money.cnn.com/2004/11/17/news...0/sears_kmart/

not that it matters much in this context.

Being only in K-Mart doesn't really seem like that big of a deal. There aren't even that many K-Mart stores around any more (at least in my area). But since K-Mart and Sears are technically one and the same, I suspect Sears is also HD exclusive, which makes this equivalent and/or better than Target. Now if it was Wal-Mart on the other hand...

To sell to their 25 consumers a day. I don't think anyone believes that Kmart going exclusive will really affect the sales totals. They don't compete with Walmart or Target on any level anymore.

Yeah, proven to be bogus.

It's funny because I was in Kmart the other day for some lightbulbs and they had only Transformers on HD DVD, while they had a whole row of BD movies... I figured this was untrue.

Similarly, Target only sells BD standalones, but also sells the 360 HDAO; they sell both BD & HD DVD software. Therefore, while each has a standalone skew to either side, they are both dual format supporters.

I think the biggest surprise from all this is the fact that K-mart still exists. News to me. They closed all their stores here years ago.

The one here is like zombie-land... I stop there sometimes for something quick because it's on my way home and there is NEVER anyone there, like 3 cars or some shit... Wal-Mart and Target are always packed.

In my "other home" of Pittsburgh though there are quite a few Kmarts still rocking, many of them with some decent business. I think there's a lot more people without personal transportation up there that shop at Kmart simply because it's the closest thing.
