where to start

Ok today, I will hook up the hd a2. I will have just enough cash to buy two movies to get started. I love superhero movies, so my first though is batman begins and superman returns, but I really want to see what this can do, so if those two are not good, suggest some.

Batman Begins has an excellent video transfer & the audio ain't that bad neither. There are a ton of extras including a PIP actor/filmmaker commentary & I believe all the extras from the 2-disc special edition are ported over as well. Great buy.

Superman Returns has a decent video transfer & the TrueHD track is excellent. Lots of extras on this disc as well. (I believe 3+ hours worth) I really enjoyed the classic score in lossless sound & parts which were re-mixed more modern like the scene where Superman returns Lois to the Daily Planet. There are only a few scenes with minor film grain which I think were intentional, overall a solid Warner release & if at all a fan, a must own on HD DVD.

Hope this helps.

(edit)

Those two are great. But for the most jaw-dropping HD DVDs, I'd go with:

King Kong + Corpse Bride

And when you get some cash, go for Planet Earth Hulk got a lot of compliments too, though I don't think its as impressive as the previous ones I've mentioned.

I think you should follow your BB and SR instincts.

Well people have different tastes in film, but he asked for demo material and I provided the two best examples I could think of.

I rather enjoyed both Corps Bride and King Kong. I thought they were both exceptional examples of when a production company cares about what they are doing. Not to mention, both discs are reference quality, but to each his own

As for what you should get first, BB and SR are both excelent titles you will not be disapointed with.

Hot Fuzz + Serenity would be my picks.

Upscaling of the HD-A2? It depends how good or bad your TV is at upscaling.

Are you looking for two actual good films worth watching, or just two films that have the wow factor "pop" everyone seems to look for (but will also kill most of your brain cells at the same time)? If it's the former, I suggest 2001 and Good Night and Good Luck. If it's the latter, most of the suggestions given here will do.

You can't lose with Batman Begins. You could also consider TMNT.

well, i got batman begins and superman returns. I have watched Batman begins so far and it does look great. I may get a couple more with birthday cash, but I am really going to limit purchases. I still have not changed my mind yet on the format war. I will mostly rent. It does a great job of upconverting my old dvd's

I kind of felt the same thing on the Batman Begins disc, and so i tried my dvd copy of the movie. Then the WOW factor can be seen. The Blacks are so much darker on the HD-DVD then the dvd and so is the fine detail too.

I agree to some extent. One thing i did notice is my contrast brightness settings had to be adjusted big time for HD. My brightness had to be pumped even more to compensate for the Hd signal.

It believe that is because the NTSC/DVD standard for black levels is 7.5 IRE while the HDTV standard for black levels is 0 IRE.

For optimal black levels on your HD DVD player, make sure Enhanced Black Level is set to "ON", which sets the player to the HDTV standard of 0 IRE.

Also, if using component output, set RGB to "Standard".
