The HD War: Where Do You Stand?

It’s time for another HD poll, boys and girls. It’s the end of 2007, so let’s see where our community stands. Do we still have an HD DVD majority or has neutrality and/or Blu-ray taken over?

I'm neutral, but after the "coolness of having something new" with Blu-ray wore off...I find I still prefer HD DVD in the end.

Leaning HD, see a few similarities between BD and beta, and not a big Sony fan either, though I have a couple of their LD players.

Still sitting on the fence, but thinking of getting in sometime next year. I'm starting to make lists of titles in each format that I'm interested in buying.

Software content will likely dictate which format I get. Hardware capabilities are close enough for my needs that it doesn't matter which format I pick.

Neutral.

Went Blu first with the PS3. Bought into HDDVD about two months ago when the prices on the players started dropping to more affordable levels (by my own standard).

So far I really enjoy both formats but I've had an overall better experience with the PS3 in terms of just being a better overall player with less quirks and nice responsiveness/build quality/feature set. The HD-A2 is not a bad machine but it's got it's quirks (slower to respond, won't pass pluge over HDMI, no provisions for wireless ethernet connectivity).

I cannot speak of the quality of other Blu-Ray players on the market however...I know some are having issues. Seems as if the only "truly" next-gen media player is the PS3...it really is so much more that a video game machine.

I favor the capacity of Blu-Ray discs as well as the scratch protective coating, but like HDDVD's region free capabilities. I think that the Blu supporting studios are doing a better job of supporting lossless audio and think that that's something the HDDVD studio need to improve upon. Both formats seem to deliver comparable video quality and both have their share of standout films and duds.

In the end, I'm leaning toward one unified format...doesn't matter which one though. If neither format "wins" then I'll still be OK. I just think that the format war, if carried on too long, will only ensure that HDM remains a niche market, which is what I DO NOT want.

Neutral for me. My BD's slightly out-number my HD-DVD's by 5-10 titles. That said, unless it's a combo, I still prefer HD-DVD.

Technically I'm blu-ray exclusive, but I would be neutral if Samsung would actually release their hybrid player.

I don't think there are many bd exclusive members. This forum leans heavily towards hd-dvd as it is.

Fence sitting costs nothing, and I always seem to pick the wrong way.
I think I'll wait a little longer.

HD DVD exclusive and a fence sitting person as well. Why can I say that?

Because I make my own rules.

Seriously, I do consider myself sitting on the fence but am HD DVD exclusive too since the HDAO is my means to watch HD. I'm still waiting for the possible end of one, but by then, dual format players will kick ass and be cheap. Make sense?

No?

Tell me I'm wrong then.

Not so much IMO. BD same technology, costs more, different movies. I can be patient until studios come around and support both.

I bought into HD-DVD, but would buy into Blu-Ray if I'd be able to get a cheap dual-format player.

Been a Neutral supporter since Feb. I do tend to lean more HD-DVD though and before it was because of the TrueHD tracks and HD-A1 analog support. Now i have my Onkyo 605 receiver i still tend to lean HD-DVD. 51 HD-DVDs and about to have 28 Blu-ray. Chances are though i will be buying a good chunk on my New Line movies on Blu-ray for the new rleeases and category on HD-DVD.

Blu-Ray only. I think its the better technology so I will support it. I also LOVE lossles audio and wont buy a movie without it (doesnt make sense not to include it), and since most HD-DVD discs only come with DD+ or worse, I wouldnt be buying much there anyway. I cant even keep up with the bu-ray movies I want to buy.

I might buy a cheap HD-A2 or A3 on the black Friday sales and rent HD-DVD, but I wont buy them.

My take on the war: The market is going to sustain a two-format war indefinately kinda like the game industry with multiple systems. I can live without Universal and Paramount movies. But wherever Fox goes, I go They have the movies I want most.

Well, I was on the fence for a while, waiting for one to win over the other.
But, it has become apparent to me that this will not be settled soon, nor do I think one will completely remove the other from the market. And, it really doesnt benefit a company to make a title exclusively in one format only when there are people on both sides willing to buy- narrows there sales potential.
(unless these 'exclusive deals' pay them so much to offset that)

So, after thinking about that last weekend in the wake of all these cheapo (yet non 1080p) Walmart specials, and realizing that the dual player from Samsung will be too expensive for at least the next 6 months into 2008, and some other issues a buddy of mine talked about, I chose BLU-RAY.

I bought a PS3 in the end, and the little time I have spent with it so far has been great. Plus, I did find a Blu-Ray site that talks about all the upcoming, delayed, and committed but no release date set movies coming out on BRD and I can say that I am completely satisfied as I am only going to pick up certain items to improve my collection.

With the Die Hard set coming, Matrix and Batman Begins (which I was concerned since there were HD DVD releases already), Rock, Terminators and some other Arnold flicks, I am pacified for the moment. And, while there is no news specific to LOTR, New Line has started announcing a bunch of dates for Blu Ray movies coming out. (oh yeah, the Blade series)

I would say I am still format neutral though because if it does turn out that some of my favorite series only hit HD DVD, like SW, LOTR, Indiana, and other classics like Jaws etc., then I would get one of those as well. In fact, my wife has already predicted that depending on what LOTR comes out on will determine if I get an HD player.

So, I am enjoying it so far, the sound more than the picture actually. And the fact my wife is noticing how sharp the image is means it must be better cause she really believed this whole HD garbage was nothing better, UNTIL she saw the Food Network in HD. Funny how that works.

In retorspect to last nights partial viewing of SM2, I could do without seeing the sweaty, greasy, crater filled skin of Alfred Molina.

It's worth mentioning that the HD-A2 player Walmart sold for $99 retailed for $499 last year. Its not a "low end" model or anything, it has simply been replaced by a newer HD-A3 model (which is pretty much the same honestly) and they are clearing stock for new inventory. It has gotten awards including product of the year from some sites and has amazing A/V quality, so we aren't talking about a noname POS here.

I am still surprised that people still do not realize it makes no difference if the player outputs 1080i or1080p if you have a good 1080p HDTV that does inverse telecine/deinterlacing. Sony has done a great job of marketing this as a necessity, but for player output it really doesn't matter.

You can read about why 1080i vs. 1080p output makes no difference on HD DVD if you have a good HDTV that does inverse telecine by reading the below links:
