Told you at the rate they're going they'd be giving away players. And now it's finally happening...

Virgin/Toshiba to Give Away Free HD DVD Players!

One-hundred fifty lucky Star Trek fans will be walking away with a free Toshiba HD DVD player on Tuesday, November 20. There's only one catch ... this special giveaway is happening in New York City at the two different Virgin Megastores. But if you are lucky enough to live close by and are willing to stand in line to get a player, you could be walking away with an HD DVD player from Toshiba, valued at $299!
INFORMATION:

Date:
Tuesday, November 20.

Details:
The Times Square store opens at 9:00 a.m. and the first 400 customers who purchase the Star Trek: The Original Series Season 1 Remastered on HD/DVD will receive a goodie bag containing a tribble, a vintage poster of the cast and a free issue of the current Star Trek magazine. Of those, the first 120 customers who purchase the set will also receive a free Toshiba HD DVD player valued at $299.

As an alternate choice, head down to the Union Square store, which opens at 11:00 a.m., and get in line. The first 150 customers who purchase the Star Trek: The Original Series Season 1 remastered on HD/DVD will also receive the goodie bag described above. At this location, the first 30 of those customers who purchase the set will also receive a free Toshiba HD DVD player.

(Please note that the Star Trek Remastered set plays on both DVD and HD DVD players. It is literally the best of both worlds!)

We advise that you get there early to take part in this giveaway. Warning: We can't confirm this, but rumor has it there may be Klingon sightings!

Locations:
Virgin Megastore – Times Square
1540 Broadway, Level 2
Phone: (212) 921-1020

Virgin Megastore – Union Square
14th and Broadway
Phone: (212) 598 - 4666

We suggest you get down to the Virgin Megastores early for the best possible chance of getting one of these amazing players!

Why couldn't today be the one day of the month I have to go to the Rotten Apple?

Damn...I would have been all over this.

Toshiba should start a hd dvd club like columbia house.

You log on, pick your free hd dvd player and sign up to buy 20 hd-dvds over the next 2 years.

Seems like a better plan than just giving away players or selling them for $99. At least this way they get guaranteed software sales and a even healthier attach rate.

These deals are awesome for consumers, but I'm starting to wonder how desperate the Red side is getting to resorting to these give aways when they already had the price advantage to begin with.

Toshiba loses around $15,000 on this event (the rough value of each player x 120), which is less than the cost of a full page ad in a major newspaper or magazine in NYC. In return, they're received a ton of free publicity for HD-DVD, and Paramount's involvement with the format. Not a bad way to spend a few thousand bucks.
Although Toshiba is anxious to move more hardware (based on their own sales projections), I wouldn't consider this instance an act of desperation.

Actually I think it just represents two different strategies from the two sides. Blu-ray seems to be centered on pushing the format through disc sales. Seems like at least once a month if not more there's a cheap'o blu-ray disc sale on. Probably half the blu-ray discs I own, if not more, are ones I bought at $12.50 or buy one get one free sales. You rarely see any major discounts on players though. On the flip side, the strategy of HD-DVD seems to be to push as many cheap players into the market place as possible, while you rarely see any big discount sales on the discs themselves. I wouldn't say one is more desperate than the other, just two different ideas about how to push their formats.

Very simply, Blu-Ray is trying to improve their attach rate and sell more BD discs because they already have the player base while HD DVD is trying to improve their player base as they already have the attach rate.

Is this punishment for my PH ball busting on certain subjects? Did PH pay you for that comment? Did he? Or was it all your younging-self getting a little bravado under your little belt? Either way, Sub', he clearly has boundless rage waiting to erupt and if I were you....hehehe...I trust him to take you to court.

(Ig-Man needs at least ONE backer-upper around here so thanks Mr. F.!)

Actually, I was making a subtle ST reference.

ST6 - Valeris addresses Spock in that manner.
