Warner Blu-ray BOGO, what does it mean?

So Warner, the studio that has been rumored to go HD exclusive in order to sell more red razor blades has gotten in on the insanity known as BOGO mania over at Amazon.

What does it mean?

They are dumping blu-ray inventory before going red only?

They are doing this as a show of support for their blu brothers?

And why no hd bogo?

I'm sure the BDA reports numbers to each other. I bet Sony, Fox, and Disney are touting the sales they are getting from bogos and Warner wants in on the action. Since hd-dvd doesn't want to bring down the price of their movies, Warner is going blu on the sale. In the end, they will make a lot of money, just like the other studios have. You turn a profit if you sell 5000 bd's at $12 than 500 at $20. Despite the rhetoric, all studios make money on the "free" title that is in the sale.

If Warner is going to be part of the BDA, they likely need to stay with the BDA program to avoid appearing biased to either side. So if the BDA order of the day is BOGO and Warner remains in the BDA, they probably need to follow the BDA gameplan.

It means that if you buy one movie from the pre-selected list of titles you get another movie form the same list for "free" (actually both movies are priced at 1/2 off the regular price though).

Don't try to read too much into it...Warner has openly pledged to support both formats and no one has really heard otherwise. Just take advantage of the sale (if you've gor a Blu-Ray player) and enjoy your movies.

A news story based on a rumor by a BD-exclusive studio. What do you think Lionsgate would say? That Warner would go HD DVD, the format Lionsgate does not back?

I have no idea, I just thought it was relevant to this topic.

I read Engadget a lot as there are not many other places for HD news.

Oh it is definitely relevant. It is simply amusing how misinformed some sources can be. Business Week bought the BDA BOGO sales figures hook, line, and sinker - then used a BD-exclusive studio to back their story! Entertaining to say the least.

I don't think I saw the Business week thing. I'm just trying to keep up with the news so I know what to shop for when the time comes. Probably end up with both.

BTW do you work for HD-DVD or know someone who does?

I don't work for HD DVD but as you can see I'm a huge enthusiast of the format, primarily due to the over-intrusive DRM on BD. Don't like giving studios the power to run programs on my computer, which Blu-Ray's BD+ DRM allows. I guess you could say I am more an enemy of BD's DRM than anything else.

Closest I've come to "knowing" someone who works for HD DVD is having technical & marketing discussions with Amir Majidimehr of Microsoft both in public forums and via PM. Hardly anything serious, though.

IMO your best bet is to wait until dual players like the Samsung BD-UP5000 and the new LG BH200 come down in price (the original LG BH100 sucked) if you don't want to gamble. The Paramount deal proved anything can happen at anytime in this "war."

No worries. Your icon and sig looked all official so I thought maybe you were and "insider" like they have over at AVS forum.

Well, I'm set on getting a PS3 eventually. So if if the 360 does not come with a built in drive next year I will just get a separate player or the add on.

Granted with CES coming up this could change if something really cool gets announced.

As someone who owns a x360, I would strongly recommend avoiding it for any sort of DVD/HD DVD playback (it rocks as a game device though). Unless MS fixes their issues, you're better off going to a Toshiba A2 or A3.

Or a 360 with a built in HD-DVD drive will be announced at CES. Could happen.

Either way, I'm not getting a 360 until I am 100% sure they are fixed. Too many horror stories out there.

And I'm not getting anything until I get a new TV, so I can fence sit for awhile longer.

However, I am doing my research on all of this now, so I'm not out of the loop when I actually start my upgrades.

360 w/ builtin HD DVD is an interesting thought and it might actually happen if Microsoft feels they need to add HD DVD playback to compete with PS3 in featureset. It couldn't happen this year because none of the HDDVDROM drives supported 12x DVD playback which is required for XBOX 360 games. But in 2008 surely some of the HDDVDROM drives will support 12x. Its possible the drive in the HD-A3 may even support 12x, who knows? (Its different than the one in the HDAO/HD-A2/HD-A20/HD-XA2).

With a 3 year warranty I don't think you have much to worry about.

Well I have read about people sending in a bad 360, getting another one back and that one goes bad. Would rather not have the hassle.

Newer versions of the 360 are bound to fix that RRoD issue and I'm in no hurry.
