The Hi Def Carrot

It occurred to me the other day when I was reading something about making sure that your next display could do 24 frames or something divisible by 24. I think it was Ruined that pointed us all in that direction. Thanks Ruined

That’s when I had the flashback.

It was back in 1988.. Bay Bloor Radio in Toronto had a Yamaha surround sound processor on sale. Having spent the 2 previous years reading Stereo Review I knew I had to have it. In less then two weeks I had mated it with my JVC and a baby was born. Well in my “mind” anyway.

It allowed me to listen to movies in “surround sound” I was amazing. In essence, I took the red pill.

Now these many years later I’m still chasing the HD carrot. We all are.

Lossless audio. TrueHD audio. And the DTS version ????. HDMI 1.1, 1.2 1.3 and 1.3a???? I still think that 5.1 and uncompressed audio sound pretty dam good.

I’m getting tired of it. Matter of fact I’m almost ignoring it.

So you're tired of two brand new audio codec after 11 years of standard DTS and 12 years of standard Dolby Digital?

I'm excited about the next gen audio codecs. I have been impressed with PCM and Dolby THD, and even with DD+. My receiver I bought does well even if it doesn't do bitstream because it's hdmi 1.2 and I haven't really had any complaints so far.

I think it's great we have the opportunity to hear the original master of the audio track for a film, without compression. I don't want to go back.

Okay, I recant. I'm not tired it.

I just wish they would pick one audio format. I mean really, I just got my HK a short time ago. It has HDMI so I figure I'm good to go.
I'm not about to upgrade it just to get True HD or DTS HD.

Uncompressed sounds great to my ears. I have yet to hear Dolby and DTS but from what I've read they sound just about the same and that's it's more of a space saver then an audio improver.

But there's no stopping it so why fight it.

I'm just not going to buy into all the hype.

My DTS Laserdiscs are incredible for great uncompressed audio with great separation and surround.

The Dolby Digital ones are also very good, but the channel separation is not as distinct. So far, I have not yet heard a DVD, compared to the same film as an LD and same basic type audio track, that has comparable sound. They are good, but not quite as good.

I also have the synthetic surround sound system for those simple mono and stereo tracks. It actually works pretty well to give a robust, room-filling sound, though lacks significant separation of course.
