BD owners help me out!
Please post the following if you could:
Which of your BD discs are MPEG2-encoded? Which of your BD discs have no popup menus?

I know "Click" doesn't have one. In fact, it had one of the worst static DVD menus I've seen. Or, at least on a profile 1.0 standalone I tested it on at the time (Panasonic DMP-BD10).

So there are BR disks that the menu doesn't lay over the movie as you play it? Hmm what would Moog say here.... oh right.

Forgive me if I don't assist someone who has done nothing but piss all over Blu-Ray for the last 18 months.

There are a few BD discs which do not have a pop up menu.
Click is not one of them. Early Lionsgate, Sony & a handful of Warner discs are Mpeg-2 20th Century Fox still uses Mpeg-2 OT I checked out War's PIP & the PS3 handles it well. There are 2 PIP on it actually. If you toggle the PIP on/off the film doesn't take you back to the beginning of the film ala Paramount & Warner PIPs

BluRay sucks.
Everyone happy? I can't believe you guys are making a stink out of the fact that Ruined is looking to make the move. He has ALWAYS made it clear that his first priority was the presentation and offerings of the movies, not the HD media. He recognizes that BD will become the dominant format, so there is no point in arguing its weaknesses any longer. No one is expecting BD owners to kiss his ass, but some of the postings in here make me wonder if BD owners were only interested in the technology. Frankly, it's really disappointing because I always felt the 'File was made up of like minded individuals who loved movies, but just disagreed on the formats. This last week's worth of Ruined bashing makes me think that it's more about rubbing another film buff's face in it than it is about welcoming more BD owners to the fold. If that’s the case, why don't we take turns lining up and hitting him with a rolled up newspaper? I'm sure he deserves that for not siding with Sony.

I AGREE 100%. Ruined always presented his case fairly and tried his best to ensure things stayed civil. Never did he call anyone "sheep" or the like, he simply stated what he whole heartedly believed to be true. When Warner switched, he promptly declared "its over". This couldnt have been easy, but I for one commend him on how quick he stood up and made it clear. Seems like a good guy to me, to judge him on his media player preference seems a little silly.
On a related note. I hated Sony and in many ways still do. However this PS3 is fast becoming my favorite HT component I have ever owned. Damn thing is an amazing unit in every aspect. Last edited by biglyle : 01-11-2008 at 03:04 PM. |

After seeing my set display 1080i on T3 clicking on the remote, I did the same for War. It displays 1080p.

Ruined didn't blatantly bash BD without including sources and some kind of proof. He did what a good litigator would do, leave out those things that might hurt your case. Some times he was over the top, but just, because he was such a clear supporter doesn't mean he should get railed on for it. Wouldn't you rail on him more if he didn't admit it was over and wasn't willing to embrace what has come about. He would be in denial, continue preaching the benefits of HD-DVD and shouting years down the road that BD never should have one in the first place. Hell, I think he has handled things quite well.

The purpose of this thread is so Ruined can point out what he feels are inferior BDs - as he's so resolutely pointed out how he hates static menus and Mpeg-2 encoding. He hasn't embraced Blu-Ray, merely shrugged off a format he convinced many users here would overthrow the "evil Sony empire."
I'm not being rude, just stating the incredibly obvious.

I don't think that's a fair comment. Could Ruined be accused of being overzealously in favor of HD-DVD? Sure. I never saw it as "pissing" on Blu-Ray so much as praising the benefits of HD-DVD versus Blu-Ray.

I think if you comb through the high def digest bluray reviews, you can find all the mpeg2 encodes and menu defects you want. I haven't seen any movies without a popup menu. It's been a long time since I saw Click, and I think I would have remembered if it was sans menu. At the very least, there probably aren't many to count in that category. Most early bd movies are in mpeg 2, so your list will be long. However, there were some great transfers done in mpeg2...as well as some stinkers.
