I didn't see it mentioned in that article, but a Netflix spokesperson mentioned (last week), that when they decide to go with a single HD format, the rental rates will go up.

I don't think this "seals the deal" as much as it is an indication that the deal is already sealed. (When Warner went Blu exclusive.)

I'm not 100% sure of Netflix's numbers, but my gut feeling is that Blockbuster's decision to go Blu exclusive last year has more impact on the bottom line.

I remember when Blockbuster was dropping HD DVD a lot of people were just saying they like Netflix better anyway. This is kind of a slap to those people.

This move really doesn't make sense to me... BluRay users can rent BR discs, and HD-DVD users can rent theirs. No matter how you add that up, it's more activity with both.

There are considerations for STOCKING those discs, but this smells more of an "agreement" with Sony or Netflix is trying to help "determine" a winner in the format war (which has already been determined, really).

Well it's definitely official. I just received an e-mail from Netflix.

Quote:
We're Going Blu-ray

Dear Seth,

You're receiving this email because you have asked to receive high-definition movies in the HD DVD format. As you may have heard, most of the major movie studios have recently decided to release their high-definition movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. In order to provide the best selection of high-definition titles for our members, we have decided to go exclusively with Blu-ray as well.

While we will continue to make our current selection of HD DVD titles available to you for the next several months, we will not be adding additional HD DVD titles or reordering replacements.

Toward the end of February, HD DVDs in your Saved Queue will automatically be changed to standard definition DVDs. Then toward the end of this year, all HD DVDs in your Queue will be changed to standard definition DVDs. Don't worry, we will contact you before this happens.

We're sorry for any inconvenience. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please call us.

-The Netflix Team

Very true, but you still heard talk about hd-dvd making the comeback. This pretty much is a blow to that hope.

HD DVD Group Responds to Netflix, Best Buy News

Quote:
"We have long held the belief that HD DVD is the best format for consumers based on quality and value, and with more than 1 million HD DVD players on the market, it's unfortunate to see Netflix make the decision to only stock Blu-ray titles going forward. While the Best Buy announcement says they will recommend Blu-ray, at least they will continue to carry HD DVD and offer consumers a choice at retail."

Hopefully this will increase the supply of blu-ray movies, so new releases don't take a long time.

I gave up on Netflix because of long HD DVD waits. Now, using BBonline, I'm experiencing long Blu-ray waits. Sigh.

Both the fact that Netflix will stop renting out HD-DVDs and Best Buy will stop selling HD-DVD players are two more blows to HD-DVD and a sure sign of it's demise .

We should be thankful the format war is being ended so soon , it's much better that way .

Well BB is still selling hd-dvd's, just not trumpeting or forwarding the format. Universal and Paramount will still be putting out movies in the meantime.

I moved all my HD-DVDs to the top of my NF queue, but with how the waits are, I still may not end up getting to watch them.

I would assume that when they get them back they'd inspect them to see if they worth keeping or throwing out. My guess is that the Netflix employees get first crack at em

Netflix To Expand Blu-ray Inventory

Quote:
Online rentailer Netflix says it plans to grow its selection of Blu-ray titles by as much as three-fold in the coming year.

Speaking at the Jeffries 4th Annual Internet Conference in New York on Wednesday, Netflix CFO Barry McCarthy said that his company expects to add as many as 1,500 Blu-ray titles to its existing 400 titles this year.

McCarthy went on to say that the company had not yet decided whether the higher price of acquiring Blu-ray discs (vs standard DVD) might lead to a price hike for subscribers.

"It seems apparent that content will cost us more," said McCarthy. "Whether we raise prices will be entirely a function of churn, subscriber acquisition costs and gross margins."

As we've previously reported, earlier this month Neflix announced it would phase out its HD DVD support, saying that although only a small portion of Netflix subscribers had elected to receive high-def discs, a majority of those subscribers had chosen Blu-ray over HD DVD.

Hopefully BBonline will do the same. Too often when I throw a BD in my queue, it either says "long wait" or "coming soon."
