Free HD DVDs (not what you think)

No I'm not giving away free HD DVDs, sorry.

Does anyone have any info if Toshiba will still mail out the free DVDs to those of us who recently purchased an HD DVD player? I know it takes several weeks for them to arrive but I hope they will honor the orders already submitted.

My guess is that no new ones will be pressed but they will distribute the remainder of movies that were designated to be free HD DVDs. So, while supplies last essentially.

ya know I was thinking w/ the announcment yesterday, I still haven't received my 5 free that I sent away for in early december. Both my BD & HD mailings went out the same day and I got my 5 BDs last week.

If you don't have them by the end of March I'd say you probably will never see them. It will be interesting to see how Toshiba handles HD-DVD support after then. For instance, will there ever be any more firmware updates? My A1 is probably as good as it's going to get, and with no new media pushing the envelope it probably as run the course of it's firmware life. The first gen and second gen players are pretty stable, but there are still some issues with gen three that need some help.

Some people have reported on the Digital Bits that Toshiba is not honoring these 5 free discs anymore, or are coming up with excuses to not honor them.

Don't have a link to the exact paragraph, but it's on the 2/15/08 post at 3PM. Here's the snippet:

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/mytwocentsa151.html

And here's something that's perhaps even more telling in terms of what Toshiba is planning: It seems that the company may have started denying fulfillment of their "five free disc" offers. Bits reader Greg M., who has purchased players on both high-def formats, sent us this e-mail this afternoon:

"I received a letter back from the Toshiba fulfillment house denying my five free discs. They stated that my invoice was not within the time period of the offer. My invoice from Amazon.com was dated Dec 9th, 2007, clearly within the Oct 1, 2007 to Feb 28, 2008 range they gave on their offer flyer. What is more insidious is the invoice I sent them and they sent back to me was marked up with a ballpoint pen to cross out the date. When I called them at 800-405-7520 to try to get some understanding of why my five free disc offer was rejected... I was informed that I would have to resubmit it. I told them to go &*%$ *%$ I do not have time for their petty games."

i'll be damned if they dont' honor my request. Lucky I made copies of everything. I know it may be a dead format but 5 movies is 5 movies and they will hear from me

Anyone looking to sell off HD DVDs (or just give them to ) PM me, im interested in continuing to build my HD movie collection, as I wont be able to afford getting into blu ray until at least the summer.

Im also wondering if there are any stand alone players still available on shelves, I want to snatch up a cheap spare.

HD DVD forever

called the number a few posts up just to check on my status.

The funny thing is, the rep that answered goes:

Thank you for calling Toshiba were Blu Ray...thanks for calling toshiba hd-dvd

yeah he actually said blu-ray, made me laugh pretty hard and even though there is no shipping date set for my dvds and they're still processing, the greeting on the phone was priceless
