Cloverfield (Blu-ray)

[UPDATE] The Blu-Ray has been announced complete with exclusive features for 6/3

DVD and HD-DVD announced yesterday to retail (unsure if Blu will be added)

Looks to be a single disc release for both.

The pre-book is 3/18 and street is 4/22.

EDIT: Only for Blu-Ray or DVD now as Paramount ceases HD-DVD support on March 4

EDIT: Paramount has re-announced the movie

Cool news. I missed it in theaters but not the sound. I coud feel the bass in the booth from 2-3 theaters down. So here's hoping that they give us a PCM or TrueHD track for this movie.

This is my most anticipated release.

I want my HD DVD Collection to add up, so I hoping Paramount/Universal delay the BD releases.

Well rumour is that Cloverfield will be making its way to Blu-ray on the same day as the DVD, but with no extras.

Taken from IGNMovies.com

Quote:
Rumors, rumors, deadly rumors… at least we want to stab our eyes out at the thought of this rumor. An inside source is claiming, without any solid proof, that Paramount Home Entertainment is considering the initial release of Cloverfield will be a bare bones one, with all of their time and resources going into releasing a Blu-ray version of the film on time instead of focusing on the special features. This, of course, means that a double dip of the first blockbuster of 2008 would be inevitable.

Taken from Tagruato Blogspot:

A lot of people worked hard for over a month creating some amazing extra features for the HD release of "Cloverfield." At first it looked like not many consumers would see these features, as the release was planned for HD-DVD like Paramount's other recent titles. But now that Toshiba's HD-DVD format is dead, Paramount is scrambling to release "Cloverfield" on Blu-ray - on the original HD-DVD street date. As a result, the current belief is that there's not enough time to program all the extra features (including lots of new story stuff, along the lines of the viral campaign's backstory) in time for the Blu-ray release, and all this great work will be scrapped."

Rather see them wait and release the Blu-ray copy with all the trimmings later on. . . with PCM/TrueHD please Again this is just a rumour si far

This rumor sounds kinda silly. What do they have to program? Unless the features are all interactive and must be built on BD-J instead of HDi, but that seems unlikley.

My first big DVD want of the year.

I'd hope that Paramount would get their BD shit in gear and get this out on time. If not i'd hope they'd just wait until it is ready and then release it.

This isn't that hard to believe. Paramount is famous for bare bones releases. Look at Titanic. The highest grossing film of all time, and it was a bare bones release for a LONG time after they finally released it on DVD. And, Java programming is rather difficult to begin with, so if they are allegedly having programing issues, I would not be surprised.

Either way I'm going to buy this on April 22 HD-DVD or Blu Ray. This was one of my favorite movies of this year. I'll get it on HD-DVD if the Blu Ray one doesn't have the special features. If they both have them well gotta go with Blu then.

Sadly this week with Into the Wld and Things We Lost in the Fire. Paramount will no longer be making any other HD-DVD for release. So its Blu-ray or DVD for this one now.

I'm really pissed off at Toshiba, they couldn't wait a few months so studios like Paramount can give us CLOVERFIELD and other Oscar Nominee titles.

I was looking forward to seeing it with H.U.D. (IME, U-Control) and other Bonuses.

I feel ya. This is one were I was actually looking forward to the special features. I wish they could get them in the Blu Ray disc. Hell even push it back a month to get it done right. But no it will be a bare bones disc and then a special feature one a few months from the release date.

I thought extras weren't important? I guess this is what happens when you launch a format that isn't ready for release

I never caught this in theaters, but from what I am hearing here and other places, I think it's going to be a blind buy. It should look good upconverted on my HD-A35

It will be out on blu-ray eventually I'm sure. But it's going to take some time to re-do all those HDI extras in BDJ. It's not like they can quickly port them or there's a way to convert the programming. Essentially they're having to start from scratch on the disc. Give them some time.
I never saw the film, but my understanding is that it's shot in a style that mimics someone's camcorder recording, both in quality and photography. Why that'd be a hot item to want in HD is beyond me.

There's a big difference between natural film grain and something that's made to look SD in the first place. Seems like it kind of defeats the purpose having it in HD.

The classic 1-18-08 trailer looked great in 720p. I even had some people who commented on how clear and great the trailer looked on my system. I've found that I prefer HD DVD for darker films like this because of the better, sharper black levels too.

Well generally I could give a shit about special features but I really loved Cloverfield so I would really dig the extras.

Well it was shot with a Hi def camcorder so I would naturally like to get the hi def version of the film.

well also Cloverfield is the type of movie where extras on the dvd could really aid in repeated viewings since there was no information or behind the scenese stuff on the film released so there's a lot out there that we don't know about the film

Paramount hasn't released a timeframe yet for their BD slate. I would guess late summer, early fall.

Vonner, the SD transfer is very strong. The decreased quality even adds a bit of extra charm to film's production. And the 5.1 track is absolutely stellar! The disc should tide you over until the BD is announced.

I don't think we'll see any Paramount titles till the Q4. I think they're still trying to extract their pound of flesh from Toshiba and will try to say they should be paid because they are remaining in the hd-dvd camp (even though it doesn't exist now). Something tells me Toshiba didn't see the war ending so soon and probably didn't put a clause in about not having to pay if the format no longer exists.

Hmmmmm - Watched this last night and this may sound weird, but I'm glad to have seen it. I was reasonably captivated, but let's just say I won't care if I never see it again.

I think it was a very interesting take on the giant monster movie genre, despite the detestable shaky cam and the Blair Witch Project flashback's I was having. I might be interested in Cloverfield 2, but only if they don't repeat the POV. Like I said, once is enough.
