Led Zeppelin "Song Remains the Same" BD rerelease still has TrueHD dropouts... Avoid!
Just a heads up, Peter Bracke has confirmed that the BD rerelease of "Song Remains the Same" has the same exact flawed TrueHD track from the original release, with audio dropouts at timecode 1:40:45. This is not a master problem, but rather a botched encoding job as the HD DVD's TrueHD track did not have this problem at all (I tested both on the same setup, Panasonic BD30 for Blu-ray and Toshiba HD-A35 for HD DVD - both bitstreaming to an Integra DTC-9.8). Funny enough, the standard DD lossy "core" of the soundtrack does not have the dropouts, only the actual lossless track has the problem.
Warner really dropped the ball here. First they include something they have no rights to, and then when they rerelease it they fail to correct glaring errors in the soundtrack. AVOID! ![]()

I tested the HD DVD TrueHD soundtrack and it had no dropouts at all, perfect. Only the BD has dropouts, and Derb got them in the same place as did Peter Bracke. So clearly the BD encoding is botched. When you are being charged $29.99 MSRP/disc, there is no reason the accept mediocrity because the studio is too cheap to do a re-encode. If Warner doesn't announce a replacement program, I'll have to get the HD DVD again and fix the Blu-ray myself :p

I'll re-post here..
Here are the time codes if you want to check them out, 1h 40m 45s > 1h 40m 52s (7 seconds) - Drum solo No sound, bitrate jumps from 2+Mbps to 850Kbps 1h 41m 45s (1 second) - Drum solo No sound, bitrate jumps from 2+Mbps to 850Kbps Thats it. Interesting though that Brake comments that he did not have the dropouts on the PS3 but did on the Samsung. Mine happened on the PS3. ![]() Anyways from what you see from the time codes & actually listening to those sections of the film, in no way do those dropouts matter imo as no song is being ruined. |

My guess is Bracke's PS3 for whatever reason is only outputting the unaffected lossy core DD track of the TrueHD stream, not the fully decoded TrueHD lossless stream which is affected. If you set your PS3 to "bitstream" the dropouts go away because the standard lossy DD core is actually dropout free, its only the lossless portion of the encode that is botched. This is based on feedback I've read from people on AVSFORUM.

If you have bitstream set on PS3 for a TrueHD track, AFAIK it outputs the lossy DD core of the TrueHD track bitstream instead of decoding the lossless component to PCM. Remember on BD every TrueHD track has to have a lossy DD stem attached to it to ensure all players can decode them.

Might be a handshaking issue with his equipment. The way this disc interacts with the PS3 has already been confirmed long ago by Derb here and several others on AVSFORUM. If your PS3 is setup to decode the full TrueHD stream, then you get the dropouts. If it is setup to pass the lossy core, you don't.

Why would you set the PS3 to bitstream the TrueHD track to hear the lossy core? That makes 0 sense. There already is a separate audio lossy track included. DD 5.1 @ 640kbps |

Some people do not have receivers with PCM5.1 support, yet they still might want their receiver to do the decoding of the lossy codecs. That is where bitstream comes in. Some people also just want their receiver to light up with the proper codec.
