Nine Inch Nails Ghosts: I-IV Deluxe Edition BD

Image says it all

Part of a huge $90 shipped boxed set. And it is good Nine Inch Nails, not the politically charged "NIN-Lite" they have served up the past two albums.

all of that is included in the ultra-deluxe box... on its way, for only $300! be warned though, shipping is another $70USD.

Mmm, it IS tempting. I've never really been a fan of their purely instrumental stuff(Not a full albums worth anyway, actually the politically charged stuff is great, but I can see why Ruined wouldn't like it ), but this is some great sounding stuff, and the Blu Ray disc with HD sound... Might just have to pony up for the $90 set.

Really strange with the NIN drought after The Fragile(and the drought before that) to be getting so many new albums, I'm loving it!

I could see how you might like the lyrical content based on your political stance, but I don't see how you like the music itself. The music in With Teeth and Year Zero is a joke compared to PHM, Broken, TDS... Its even poor compared to the earlier remix albums like Fixed, Closer to God, and FTDS. With Teeth and Year Zero are far too "Pop"-ish... Maybe 3 quality songs on each release and that's all folks.

And the lyrics, though you might like the thought behind them, sound amateurish at times. "With-UH Teeth-UHHHH!" I mean, the first time I heard that song I started laughing it was so poor. Many more examples of that across both albums: "a-FLIP FLOP FLIP FLOPPIN'!" And as for his "politically charged" lyrics, to be honest he sounds like a whiney little kid who can't get the toy he wants more than anything. A 180 from the general anti-establishment music of the past. I think he hung around Moby too long during his recovery and his music and lyrics suffered as a result of the influence. The political nature behind "Year Zero" is transparent as well despite Trent's claimed "concept album" schtick; see "Capital G" lyrics for an obvious example.

Ghosts, though, is quite good. While it is all instrumental, I see that as an improvement from the mediocre political whinefest that was the past two NIN albums. If you can't write some decent lyrics, then no lyrics is better IMO. Ghosts at least brings back some of the sounds we heard in the Quake, Lost Highway soundtracks as well as Still. I hope Trent's next album has less political lyrics and instead he goes back to making quality songs (both music and lyrics) similar to the pre-With Teeth era.

Well since this is not even near the PPG I won't get into arguing the politics of the albums. Considering what actual pop music sounds like, I think it's ludacris to call anything NIN pop. And if by pop, you mean somewhat simplistic... as I learn the guitar I find often the most memorable licks from great bands are incredibly simple(I learned to play Enter Sandman in 10 minutes). It doesn't dminish those songs for me. I will say my favorite NIN album to date is The Downward Spiral. I don't think that has yet been surpassed, the music so intense, great lyrics. I'm very happy to have that in multichannel SACD!

Downward Spiral and Futher Down the Spiral v1/v2 are definitely the best. I actually have the SACD Downward Spiral for the extra tracks and also the DualDisc release for 5.1 via DVD-Video. Both FTDS releases too, they are great.

I wasn't getting into the politics in my reply beyond the obvious. I was just saying the With Teeth/Year Zero music was mediocre and the lyrics were shallow and downright laughable at times (such as examples given in my previous reply) compared to previous NIN albums, thats all.

Ah, in that case I say even shallow NIN is better that 99.9% of the crap out there today.

Perhaps, though recently I've found myself listening to 30 Seconds to Mars more and more. I think on my Zune card it is my #1 played band by far. While they are a popular band, their lyrics have depth and the music is good. Both albums they released are very listenable the whole way through and quality throughout IMO. Also, I saw them live and the lead singer (of Requiem for a Dream and My so-called life fame) actually can sing as well as the studio recording, which is a rarity these days. Gives a good show, as well.

NIN has become more of a curiousity and less of a staple of mine, though I generally still get all of their stuff as it is ususally at least decent, even if its not always great.

i finally got a chance to listen to the lp in full and i'm pretty excited about getting my hands on this record. i've already announced a "listening session" to my friends for the blu-ray mix... i lived on the downward spiral for years, but the fragile has become my favourite nails record of all-time production-wise, and to me, this recording fits somewhere between the fragile and year zero. anyone else drop for the ultra-deluxe box?

I have The Downward Spiral, and payed the $5 for Ghosts. I want The Fragile, I think I might end up getting it soon. Is it really that good, or am I in for more of the same?

Ghosts makes me so happy. I don't know why, but listening to that album and walking around campus just put a smile on my face today.

I think I might splurge for the blu-ray set.

The Fragile is good, but a bit bloated IMO. There are quite a few tracks I believe that could have been shaved off and stuck on a remix album that would have made The Fragile more effective overall.

However, if you enjoy Ghosts, I'd definitely go for The Fragile. Many of the tracks are similar in musical nature to Ghosts, except with singing. While I'd say the Fragile is not as good as the earlier NIN Albums (PHM, Broken, TDS, FTDS), its a lot better than NIN's recent albums.
