Blu-Ray DVDs not getting special packaging love?
If you check out the weekly ads from Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, etc, you'll find that almost every new home-video release comes out in 3-4 different versions: Single disc SD edition, 2-disc SD special edition, BluRay/HD-DVD containing all the features from the 2-disc special edition.
The 2-disc SD special editions usually cost less than the BluRay versions AND a lot of times, they have special packaging, and/or collectibles such as comic books, art books, action figures, collectible figures, steel-book cases, store-specific exclusives, etc. The stores are going all out in trying to get consumers to buy the SD versions. So, why aren't Blu-Ray versions getting any of these collectibles or special packaging? |

its hard enough getting more and more people to buy a more expensive player to watch the same movie on BD that they could on SD dvd let alone put in special packaging and trinkets.
Let BD become the standard and we'll start to get more special edition packages

I actually hope Blu-ray packaging stays somewhat standardized. DVD packaging has gotten stupid and too many times has lost sight of it's primary goal: to protect the disc from damage. Just because the majority of people seemingly lose all fine motor skill when handling optical disc media doesn't give studios the right to pack discs in cases that scratch the disc when you merely tap the box. And don't give me that shit about BD being 100% scratch-proof.
I also usually throw away/recycle outer cardboard slip covers and any ads in BD/HD cases. Useless waste of paper, especially when the outer slip cover is identical to the case art it's covering, what stupid idiot thought up that?!? If you want your release to stand out, try lowering the price instead. Quote:

I'd honestly rather have the movie in the normal case. It looks more uniform, takes up less room, and is harder to damage.

I was hoping...
...that perhaps the additional packaging and/or collectibles might help boost Blu-ray sales. Often times, these add-ons do persuade me to make that DVD purchase. I've seen lots of people line up outside BestBuy, Circuit City, etc, to get their hands on that new DVD with a free collectible.
And remember the Best Buy HellBoy Dir's Cut with a collectible HellBoy statue? The DVDs came in the shelving appropriate size. I definitely would prefer uniform case size so its easier to put into a collection on the shelf. |
