Man, it's a very US-centric article. Not a mention of the VCR format (the very first easy-to-use, and affordable, consumer video format), and V2000 - which competed with VHS and BetaMax in Europe.
And what about Hollywood's attempts at delivering the goods on CD-I, D-VHS, S-VHS and Hi8? All flopped as movie formats in the US. Additionally, some of those formats lived a very long life. U-Matic, for instance, was a staple format for 30 years (I learned to edit video on this format, way back in 1990, and it kicked ass). It's not very fair to put it in the same article as a DOA format like HD-DVD and Divx.

VHS could be because it is still available, and VCRs are still made. Laser Disc, OTOH, I still use, and look for. When I get my VP 50 Pro, I will probably use it a LOT more
