I felt the movie was horrible. Saw it Christmas day and it was bloated, self-important and boring. DDL was so over the top that it took you out of the movie watching him "perform". Oh and it had DiCaprio which is another automatic strike against it.

I agree. Mark me down for loved it. DDL is awesome. When I saw it I really didn't know much going in but the movie is utterly brilliant.

Indeed, i couldn't stand him for the longest time, but around the time when GONY came out I started changing my tune. He even gives a solid performance in Man in the Iron Mask... though still outclassed by Byrne, and Malkovich.

Damnit, why can't they do this to crappy films like those Adam Sandler ones and stop mucking around with good films. I still haven't been able to bring myself to buy Patton, even though it's a great film, knowing what they did to the image. Sounds like one of the authoring houses has an engineer who's fallen asleep on the DNR button again. Though you people who complain about a disc not having that "3d pop" are also to blame. Ass kickings all around, get in line.

"Like Patton, Gangs of New York is the new poster child for precisely what NOT to do with the Blu-ray software system."
Uhh.. I thought Patton got massive praise from other reviewers from HDD & Blu-ray.com. Also I read a review of Gangs from another site which gave it high marks so I'll judge with my own two eyes thank you. ![]() |

I tend to agree we'll all have to judge this for ourselves. I would imagine the task of remastering Gangs isn't an easy one, tons of odd shooting methods, and weird shit in every frame. Viewing it and judging it there isn't easy either.

Robert Harris knows film better that most anyone out there, having supervised the restoration of Lawrence of Arabia and Vertigo and several other films (real full film restorations, not simple cleaned up video transfers). If he says something is true I'll tend to believe him over some fanboy wanker at blu-ray.com that I've never heard of (gee, someone at the official blu-ray flack site not saying anything bad about a blu-ray disc - what a shock!). In fact, when I first read the review of Patton here at dvdfile where the reviewer was going on about how great it was there there was so much less grain on the blu-ray disc than the dvd had, I knew there was trouble. Sadly, this all seems to just prove that Fox and Disney are right in their DNR reign of terror - filter out all the grain and fine detail and the masses will eat it up for looking so "clear." Next up maybe they can get rid of those pesky black bars on the top and bottom of the screen on 2.35:1 films.
Well, pretty much all Miramax titles from that period look horrible with tons of EE and other issues. Bad dvds from Disney was the norm in the early and mid-2000's, not the exception. But they've been doing a pretty good job of putting out great transfers when it comes to blu-ray - probably the most consistant of any company. So it's a shame to hear that they've fallen prey to the DNR monster. |

I'd also wager Universal will be the first studio to offer up a modified widescreen version to fit your HDTV screen. I don't buy into every reviewers take on a film, I don't care who's doing it or what film background they have. I've seen low marks at BD.com which I've disagreed with so Blu-ray.com doesn't give every film a 5 star rating. Removing grain by noise filter probably can & will take some fine detail out of the picture. Question is, how much & how noticeable is it? This grain thang is getting silly imo. Do you remember Gangs of New York looking very similar to 300 in theaters? lol |
