Where do you all get your HD money?
I am not startng this thread at all to be a jerk or anything like that. I am just amazed at how much some of you spend on this stuff and how you can afford it
I can assure you, if I had more, i would spend it. I am a teacher with five kids, so not a lot of extra cash. I am amazed that some of you have hd collections in the hundreds, heck derb it looks like you are already replacing all your hd dvd purchases on bd. I thought of all this in the thread about bd making it mainstreem and got me to thinking how many people spend t his kind of cash on this stuff |

It's easy to justify spending $20 on a movie, when I used to spend $120 on a laserdisc 13 years ago. That said, I have only purchased about 35 BDs so far, all at very good sale prices (12 of them were free, after I traded in a bunch of DVDs at Suncoast).

I work in the film industry. So its a mix of what I take home from work and the money I spend on Blu-Rays. I currently have almost 200 blu-rays, most of which I bought myself.

I used to work in the industry, but that was during DVD.
![]() My HD money comes from sacrifices I make elsewhere. I drive a used car with a lot of miles. I don't buy expensive clothes or furniture (except for what goes in the home theatre). I don’t go out to eat that much. And, most importantly, I currently do not have children or a girlfriend. So, that’s how I can afford Blu-rays and HT equipment. But, make no mistake, I also have a fair amount of debt.

Yeah, I have debt, but most of my movies is paid off. Like PH, I have a low rent amount($500), no wife/girlfriend, a paid off car, and I wait for deals when ordering movies. A lot of my movies I have gotten with bogos. I don't think that anyone that has 5 kids, with a mortgage, on a teacher's salary has the priority to bolster their HT purchases.

And I don't think we buy as many HD discs as you might think. Over the last month, I've only purchased 8 HD discs (and some of those were on sale). Of course, this does not include my SD-DVD purchases, but I doubt I go over $150 each month for HDM. I have friends who spend more than that on cigarettes and booze.

Your poll is meaningless without a time frame. Is that in a month, a year, a week, one day, what?
As to where my HD money comes from, a combination of sacrifices elsewhere and waiting for good bargains. I drive an older car that's paid for. I gave up my cable tv. I have no kids, and honestly would probably sell them to buy hd discs if I did as I hate the annoying little things. My girlfriend is pretty low maintence and enjoys cinema as much as I do (a requirement to date me) so watching discs over a good meal is a date for us. I'm old enough to the point that I have a job that I'm not getting rich off of, but it does allow me a modest amount of discretionary income. I also usually wait for a good sale. Most of my discs, especially on the blu side, were purchased at various BOGO sales and such. And yes, last year I did go a bit overboard with the credit cards, though this year I've stopped doing that. Actually, I've kind of slowed down my buying in general this year. I realized I still have about 60 HD-DVD's I haven't even watched yet and probably 80 blu-ray discs I haven't watched. That doesn't even count SD discs I haven't gotten to yet. So no more buying discs for me unless it's something I really want, or I catch a really good sale. |

I still buy more SD than HD media, and generally spend around $200 /mo on movies total. well...maybe a little more sometimes.
![]() I don't really think that's excessive. I don't go out to movies, I don't go out to bars and other forms of entertainment that would almost certainly cost much more. It's all a matter of choices.

I sold about 200 DVDs and xbox360 with 40 games and 40 HD-DVD's which funded a large portion of my Blu-Ray Collection.
I basically got about 7 PS3 games, and 60ish blu ray titles out of it. I then traded some Australian BD discs, as I can only play JP and US BD's and got Heroes on HD DVD and a Toshiba stand alone. So I basically got out of HD DVD just before the market crash, and then came back in now whilst prices are low. BD wise since I now only have US player I can buy titles for about $20-$30 AU instead of local prices which range around the $40 mark.

I am also a teacher (however not with five kids...my wife and I negotiating on a second one) and as many have said you pick and choose where you spend your money and look for sales. I'll admit I have spent more on HDM's this past two months than I certainly planned only because the format war ended, making sure I pick up some movies to watch on my A-35 (I bought this with some inheritance my I got from my grandfather.) I probably would've ended up buying the movies however more spread out over the year if HD-DVD would've dropped out. Trust me, Iprobably won't be buying many more movies this year.

Well i work at a movie theater with shit pay and need something better soon but its still enough to get me a few movies now and then. I tend to go in spurts though buying wise. I can go a whole month or longer and not buy a thing. Only to buy 4 Blu-rays or more another day from Amazon (like i just did) I bought a used car and have it finally completed my transaction this past Feb. . . and am looking into getting a new car (Ford Escape) maybe sometime this year. Plus i still live at home and don't pay rent but help with groceries and stuff. Still i can see my movie buying getting a little lower over the coming months as the weather gets warmer and i take up my other addiction GOLF. A round of that is about a disc and half and i somtimes go twice a week.
So overall i say i spend around $100-200 a month. (with fluctuations here and there)

I don't buy very many only because there haven't been a whole lot of releases I want, instead they choose to release movies like "Blades of Glory". I would spend more if some of the older catalog stuff would start coming out.

I'm basically on a budget, so I'm not buying anything, be it SD or HD.
Since having to start paying off my grad school loans AND loan on a car repair bill AND 6-7 additional credit cards AND try to save up money to help put in a little on a house BUT having not received a raise in 2+ years, I basically never have money to spare anymore anyway, no matter how much I might want to finally take the plunge and buy the hardware. |

ya, thats about it.
I'm addicted. DVDs are my only addiction (other than Rock Band) and if something is important, like cigarettes, cocaine, or booze, you find the money for it. I have a monthly budget that I pretty much stick to and around $50 a month is allocated to DVDs and rentals. If some big box set comes out that I have to have, I'll take the money from another budget, like food, and then I'll have to buy cheap carrots instead of organic ones, chuck steak instead of buffalo for that month, etc. |
