Blu-ray Glitch Exhaust

Thought this might be helpful to those just getting into BD

CONFIRMED CURRENT PROBLEM BDs Unfixed releases are highlighted in red
****
Blade Runner
* Some copies do not have the workprint on Disc 5 as it should be, instead having a repeat of the final cut disc
! Warner has a replacement program available

Chronos
* Some copies had an issue that prevented playback in some cases
! RBFilms has a replacement program available

Die Hard 2
* DTS-HDMA lossless track incorrectly flagged as DTS-HD lossy, resulting in lossy output or no sound at all on some setups
! Fox has begun to collect addresses of people with a problem to send out a new pressing of replacement discs, however, the discs sent out thus far have the same problem and are exactly the same disc!

Dirty Dancing
* Master appears to have been incorrectly scaled prior to encoding, resulting in severe jaggies.
! LionsGate does not consider this an issue

District B13
* The only English subtitle option for this foreign movie is closed-captioned for the hearing impaired, resulting in sound effects being written out in the subtitles. This can be irritating for those who are not hearing impaired, an additional standard subtitle track would have been preferable.
! Magnolia does not consider this an issue

Enter the Dragon
* Master was incorrectly filtered prior to encoding resulting in severe jaggies; effective disc resolution is 960x1080.
! Warner does not consider this an issue, and states a new master must be struck to fix the problem.

The Fugitive
* Master was incorrectly filtered prior to encoding resulting in severe jaggies; effective disc resolution is 960x1080.
! Warner does not consider this an issue, and states a new master must be struck to fix the problem.

Full Metal Jacket (original release only - original cover has white background)
* Master was incorrectly filtered prior to encoding resulting in severe jaggies; effective disc resolution is 960x1080.
! Warner has released a remastered BD with new artwork that is full 1080p resolution.

Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains the Same (both original release and re-release)
* 7-second TrueHD soundtrack dropout at 1:40:45, confirmed encoding error that affects all players. Lossless HD DVD version and lossy soundtracks on both versions are not affected.
! Warner has failed to address this issue as of 3/31

Lethal Weapon 2
* Master was incorrectly filtered prior to encoding resulting in severe jaggies; effective disc resolution is 960x1080.
! Warner does not consider this an issue, and states a new master must be struck to fix the problem.

The Night of the Werewolf/Vengeance of the Zombies
* Severe A/V lag during playback. All copies may not be affected.
! BCI does not consider this an issue

Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl
* Framing error
! Disney has a replacement program available

Species
* Authoring error where attempting to access the subtitle options via the main menu or the pop-up menu results in freezing of the player controls. This has been confirmed by paidgeek, a Sony insider. The subtitles can still be accessed properly via the subtitle button on the player's remote.
! No replacement program is planned for this

Speed
* Some copies had an issue that prevented playback in some cases
! Fox has a replacement program available

Stargate
* Early copies were missing subtitles for a portion of the movie
! LionsGate has corrected the issue with a new pressing

Terminator 3
* Some copies have the main feature encoded in 1080i when IME is not enabled
! Warner has a replacement program available

Unbreakable
* PCM soundtrack popping/distortion in rear right surround at 8:30-8:32. Also a popping noise is heard in the center channel at 1:28:21.
! Disney has failed to address this issue as of 7/8/08

UNCONFIRMED or EQUIPMENT-SPECIFIC BD GLITCHES
****
Chicago
* PCM soundtrack popping/distortion
! Need more information to determine if this is a disc issue

DVE: HD Basics
"With my pairing of the Panasonic BD-30 (firmware 1.6) and the Onkyo TX-SR 805 ("early-batch" model, unsure of firmware rev) using an HDMI path, there is often considerable difficulty and delay locking on to the disc's default Dolby True-HD soundtrack. This varies in frequency (sometimes with every chapter skip or return to play from pause, sometimes not) and duration (sometimes an acceptable and expected 2-5 second lag, sometimes in the neighborhood of 15-20 seconds, sometimes with no lock-on at all), and can sometimes (but not always) corrected by a quick "pause-play" combination.

As I have not yet seen this glitch reported in any reviews or end-user reports, I can only presume that this is a) equipment- and/or b) firmware-specific (likely on the 805's end of things, for which I've seen no official firmware upgrade as yet through Onkyo's website). Still, worth noting..."

Blu-ray Glitches

I've created this new thread so that we may continue to track problems with specific Blu-ray Discs. Let’s keep it civil this time and focus on the real issues at hand (e.g., I can’t get the Korean subtitles to work for Alvin and the Chipmunks).

Is this the ostrich approach? Pay $25 and just accept whatever messed up content is thrown your way? I'd prefer to see replacement programs for all of the affected titles instead of people just taking whatever "slop" they get. I am still debating whether to open or straight-up return Unbreakable due to the audio glitches.

It just sends a bad message to the studio that you will take anything if you buy something with obvious technical errors that would cost nothing to fix aside from a new pressing, IMO. Also, some problems are more severe than others... With the severely aliased titles like Dirty Dancing or the early WB titles you are better off with the DVD version and a good upscaler... Not sure how you can even come close to saying "all's good" with those titles that have a mess of a jaggy transfer. The 7 second dropout in Zeppelin is also unacceptable.

I second that, third it, and fourth it. Great to see this back up and running; here's to its glorious, civil future!

Now, should "we all" come across a glitch, to whom and where should we report it for inclusion in the master list? (I've got a potential one with DVE that may be hardware related).

Just post it and here and Ruined or I will add it to the master list if it turns out to be a disc issue.

Some more info on the UNBREAKABLE problems from AVS:

1:19:41/1:19:43 - Crackling in the left and then the right front channels.

1:30:32 - Center Channel

I have not watched the entire film, I have only tested a total of 3 or 4 scenes and these are the time stamps I came up with so far. Again, none of these appear on the DVD's audio tracks or in the Dolby ones present on the Blu-Ray disc.

I saw someone mention Enchanted in this thread. I've seen the movie 3 times using the Dolby TrueHD track and I haven't experienced any audio drop outs with that title...
Looks like the authoring house hard drive that stored the PCM soundtrack for the Unbreakable BD had some bad sectors on it! :/

Apparently AVP:Requiem Unrated is not the full unrated cut (one scene remains trimmed that is untrimmed on the DVD). Not sure if its a branching glitch, different master, or deliberate choice.

For possible filing under "unconfirmed or equipment-specific" glitches:

For DVE: HD Basics (Blu-ray):
With my pairing of the Panasonic BD-30 (firmware 1.6) and the Onkyo TX-SR 805 ("early-batch" model, unsure of firmware rev) using an HDMI path, there is often considerable difficulty and delay locking on to the disc's default Dolby True-HD soundtrack. PS: I can confirm on my setup that the AVS laundry-list of Unbreakable pops, distortions, and general nastiness is point-by-point accurate; perhaps an update to the main entry (beyond the two instances noted) is in order to note the severity of the issue?

Early copies of LG's Stargate BD were missing subtitles in the beginning of the film. LG have since re-pressed corrected copies.

UPDATE: The replacement discs Fox has sent out for Die Hard 2 have not fixed the issue. In fact, the replacement discs are exactly the same as the original disc. Same exact authoring date on the files, same exact problem with the DTS-HDMA track being identified as a standard DTS-HD track and resulting in no sound on some setups. No word what Fox's next move is... All I can say is, great QC guys.

At least Fox is trying, though, unlike Disney and Warner who have both ignored significant problems with Unbreakable (PCM pops/crackles) and Led Zeppelin (TrueHD dropouts) respectively.
