Cyberlink drops HD DVD support in PowerDVD 8 Ultra

The latest PowerDVD for hidef just came out, version 8 Ultra.

Reports are that picture quality looks slightly better for Blu-ray, but HD DVD has been completely axed - no major improvements from v7 otherwise. Makes v7 Ultra a rather valuable buy at this point IMO for those with a significant amount of HD DVD discs... So grab it before it is gone!

Yeah, I just bought PowerDVD8 last week (needed the PureVideo codecs for work) and found out that HD-DVD was dropped. I don't get that at all. I could see a place that needs to stock discs dropping support, but they already had the structure to play them in place... WTH?

Oh well, I still have the Ultra 7 version that came with the drive... and there's a hack to dual install both versions, (and the v7 I have will still play from the HD... they've killed that in later versions, too.)

Could this be due to having to pay royaties or something if they want to include HD DVD support? And figuring since the format is dead it's not worth it...

I would think that Toshiba would drastically reduce fees since it's a dead format now, but I'm not sure where to find that out.

Well, remember it's not just Toshiba who gets royalties but a host of other companies. Though I suspect it more has to do with them wanting to try to eliminate consumer confusion and force one format onto everyone. I think you'll see more and more companies starting to pretend hd-dvd never existed.
