Blu-ray Sales Up 351%.

Quote:
One of the reasons movie studios are hoping consumers adopt Blu-ray is in order to offset continually declining DVD sales. Since they plateaued three years ago, DVD sales have slowly decreased. The first quarter of this year was no different, showing an overall drop in DVD sales of 1.2% from Q1 2007. However, Blu-ray sales saved the day - just as studios have hoped they would - and when combined with DVD sales resulted in an overall increase in sales of 1% over last year.
Blu-ray.com - Blu-ray Sales Up 351%

dvd sales decline, Blu-ray sales increase.

Good news for Blu-ray and Sony as usuall.

Sure, maybe in 10 years Sony will have a shot of breaking even

If they want it that bad, they need to get Lucas and Spielberg off their asses.

Studios don't tell Lucas and Spielberg what to do, Lucas and Spielberg tell the studios what to do. They won't change their tune until they want to. Though now that Universal is coming into the blu-ray fold I suspect we'll see more Spielberg titles start hitting. Spielberg seems to have no problem with his stuff being released on blu-ray, as Close Encounters showed. Lucas won't release anything he fully controls (ie Star Wars) for years though. And it's not like anyone is going to tell him to do differently. When the DGA tried to make him change the credits to ESB, he responded by quitting the guild completely. He will do what he wants when he wants to.

The first part comes with an installed player base that they want, and not untill then. The second part comes with time. As long as it survives, prices will come down.

Now if Sony has it's way, it won't be for a couple more years

I don't want to commit blasphemy here, but Lucas is a horrible director/writer. Jar Jar Binks should be all I have to say.

Frankly, Hollywood has to just stop putting out crap and they’ll find their audience again. Also, I’m thinking that it’d be nice if they’d stop upping the prices across the board for substandard products. Theater ticket prices keep rising, but the movies aren’t getting any better.

There are a few gems out there, but my local theater hasn’t had a movie I’ve been compelled to see in probably a year.

This, IMHO, is the real problem that Hollywood is facing. Chruning out crap and expecting the masses to fall in line with it, and be happy. The theater experience is a joke. I bet a number of the users here have better settups than most theaters these days. Why on earth would one want to put themselves through a crappy theater with rude patrons that talk through the movie, not to mention what cell phones have done to the movie going experience.

Sadly, the box office results say otherwise about the theory that more people will go to the movies if they stop putting out crap. Crap is what sells. The numbers don't lie. Just look at the top grossing films of all time - Titanic, Shrek 2, The Phantom Menace, Pirates of the Caribbean, Transformers - the defense rests. It's not Hollywood that needs the adjustment, it's the audience. Long gone are the days when a good film would be allowed to play out and find it's audience. Jaws killed it ushering in the era of the blockbuster. Hollywood is a slave to money, and if good films were raking it in, they'd make more good films, simple is that. But sadly, in this day and age more people are rushing out to see the films of Michael Bay (Transformers box office - $319,246,193) than Sidney Lumet (Before The Devil Knows You're Dead box office - $7,084,227). Good films are out there, but no one is going to see them. So we can all be high and mighty and say bad films are the problem, but for the masses, crass sells.
I do agree that theater presentation has gone in the crapper though. Most theaters don't even have projectionist anymore and just have the kid at the snack bar go start the automation - and it shows. I used to go to pretty much every film that came out in the theater. Since getting hd-dvd and blu-ray, I rarely go out at all. I get a far superior presentation at home. If theaters want to get people back into the seats, getting the film in focus for once would be a nice place to start.

But Jaws was a great film, and a block buster, and made the studios a boat load of cash. Why cant we get more of both? I want more, more and even then some more.

in case you don't know they can't get l&s off there ass.
the studio's hands are tied with those two idoits.

lucas&spielberg have control over there movies.deals they made with there studio's many years ago.
i think if fox had any say starwars would have seen the light of day already.
however lucas did say during the war that if there was one format,he would release on that format, your looking at another 3years before starwars comes out.btw i know many people that could care less about starwars,it so over.
if lucas can get over himself[he's so full of it] and see a lot of people want starwars on bd maybe it will happen sooner then later.what i don't get is here is a guy who said ''if it wasn't for the fans ,starwars would n't have been so sucessful.so what does he do for his fans ...noting,except stick it up there ass,i'm one of them.

well said and your not alone. other then starwars what has lucas done thats worth anything.he got real lucky with starwars and has lived off it ever since.
at least spielberg loves to make movies and has made a few.the issue with these guys is they think there some kind of hollywood gods and hollywood bows down to them....i say kiss my ass to both of them.

i think thats one film spielberg has no say in,so uni could release it with no problems.
the thing is studio's should just not bother with these two idoits and release
good titles they have under there control.
you would think with the fact we have hdm now they would want to put there films on bd to show off there art and make a ton of money....nope....idoits

My response was more in jest to the specific poster rather than anything related to HDM. Check his post history and all you will see is one-dimensional Sony-is-God spiel and for the most part nothing that actually adds value to the discussion at hand. The response I posted was simply a joking response to his constant Sony praising.

Had he worded his post a little differently and maybe posted something aside from Sony-speak now and then, the response given would have been a lot different.

This is why I pretty much ignore anything this user posts. I was just comenting on Lucas and Spielberg and their ability to do what they want with their property.

As for HDM being here, if it didn't have all the extra baggage, I would be ok with it.

I have logged onto this discussion threads numerous times now just because of the title "Blu-ray sales up 351%"

Dang, if they can make the numbers climb now when they have no competition they are sunk...of course it is going to climb!

My main reason for going to the movies is that I want to see that specific movie right now. I don't want to wait till it comes out on dvd or Blu Ray. I wait though on a whole bunch of movies though.

Oh, I agree with you. Unfortunately, the list of Must See movies for me is dwindeling, and with presentation being what it is, I almost prefer to see it at home. Once I get my projection setup done, I imagine I will spend a LOT less time at the theater...

Last movie I saw at the theater, well 2 back to back, were Transformers & Knocked Up.

I enjoyed both films but I'm not in any rush to go see films in a cineplex. Before those 2 films, the last picture I saw in a theater was SW III.

I figure why waste $30 on a ticket & food when I can just blind buy the shit in HD & know it will look ten times better than the theater image.

Nothing available for in home use looks anything like an even somewhat functioning movie theater film projector.

This is probably true, but in my area, it's difficult to go to the theater and have the sound system set-up correctly. That's a deal breaker for me.
