Dark City: Director's Cut -- 7/29/2008

As reported over on highdefdigest.com:

'Dark City - Director's Cut' - July 29, 2008 - High-Def Digest Forums

SRP is $34.99. No word on extras, but the cover art is pretty great (strong echoes of Metropolis).

Update: The "source" link inside the post linked to above is dead; hopefully this is legit...

I was never really taken by this movie. I might have to see it again to see if my opinion has changed at all.

Is the existance of a director's cut news? This is the first I've heard of it. Does anyone know if it's significantly different?

The editing pace has been changed (the movie moves faster), and there are all new effects sequences. So, yes, this is significantly different.

While I wouldn't expect it (not least because it would require striking a second master that would match whatever more subtle tweaks and adjustments were made in the DC), it would be nice if they included the theatrical cut via seamless branching. I actually liked the leisurely pace (and, at times, slightly hokey SFX, which I felt served the story well) of the original cut, but I'm not going to hold my breath for its ever making it to BR.

I just hope the director's cut takes out the horrid opening narration that basically spoils the whole movie....

Never seen it. Don't even know what it's about or who is in it.

From highdefdigest.com, specs are in -- and all good news!

Specs, Box Art Revealed for 'Dark City' Blu-ray | High-Def Digest

The short of things: BD-50, VC-1 encode, DTS-HD 7.1, Theatrical AND Director's cut (seamless branching), all original DVD supplements (including the Ebert commentary) plus additional commentaries (including Proyas, Goyer, and others) and other new extras.

Holy shit. As with DVD, New Line knows how to get it right and then some.

Yeah, now if they can pick up the pace a bit with the same level of consistency quality transfers.....

Hate the new box art, but I am so glad to see their including the original theatrical version also. I hear the dir cut changes the tone and or pacing, which is always 50/50.

Dark City on Blu-ray looks like a damn average DVD in comparison to other 35mm films on Blu-ray/HD DVD and there is absolutely no reason for this.

New Line can go shovel their "DVD on Blu-ray" shit transfers into other people's collections because to hell with them getting my money!

I guess Tooze is blind to the screamingly obvious DNR on those direct captures.

Why can't people understand that just because someone has a website doesn't make their opinion anymore "right" than anyone elses. Trust your eyes, people! Film DOES NOT make people like waxy and fine detail clumpy. Forget the trash "reviewers" write and trust your eyes with 1920x1080 direct captures.

Definitely getting more and more sick of this crap with New Line. I can't forward at all to any of their Blu-rays. They have like two or three great looking Blu-rays and the rest can be burned for all I care.

Their BD motto should be NEW LINE CINEMA Blu-ray: Sound Great, Look Like Shit.

Inside Man if presented by New Line:

Sorry, I didn’t look at the caps, just read the review. I don’t ever assume that reviewers are right (I’m always questioning Bracke’s reviews). But, since DVDBeaver seems to spend a lot of time on stuff like combing, noise, etc., I expected their review to be better. And since you posted a link to a good review with a negative comment, I was understandably confused.

Also your comparing screenshots from a 10yr old movie to brand spanking new ones. For all we know the guy on that site doing screengrabs might have shit equipment, lets wait for more reviews.

Also Sehnzeleid, I love you, but you might wanna change your avatar. You come across as extremely angry in every post .

That doesn't matter, there are films that are decades older than DC on Blu-ray that look better. Again, there is absolutely no reason or excuse for New Line to do this.

Perhaps, but given New Line's track record, I doubt you can blame the reviewer.
