Kill Bill in September!

I will probably only get this if it is the uncut version, but it is good new nonetheless!

Now if only the rest of QT's library will be released I will be very happy. I do wonder what cut it will be. It would be cool if it was the American and the Japanese cut. It will probably only be the American but I will still get these. I wonder also if The Whole Bloody Affair is ever coming out?

In an interview with Uma Thurman a couple of months ago she said Tarantino was currently working on putting it all together in one film with some added anime stuff. But I don't think that's this release, as I believe the US rights to any extended or combined versions of the film are owned by the Weinsteins. Disney only has the rights to the films as they were theatrically released here in the US. Since the blu-ray announcement is from Disney, those are the versions that are coming out.

Thanks for the info. Makes sense now.

Assuming they use a new transfer, and I'm sure they are, then it should be EE free. Disney is probably the most improved studio when it comes to releases on dvd vs. blu-ray. They went from having some of the worst looking dvds with tons of EE and other noise to almost flawless blu-ray releases.

Which is one reason why I will get the Disney versions rather than the potential Weinstein versions. Disney will probably do a better job of sound and video quality. This is a definite buy for me.

Weinstein's hd-dvd's all looked pretty good (once you got them to boot).

While I haven't seen (but have read about) the "uncut" international versions and am eager to see "The Whole Bloody Affair", I think that the stylistic choices (e.g., B&W in House of Blue Leaves) in the US cuts are solid in their own way (and, in the case of HoBL, perhaps more appropriate than what I've read of the international versions: the B&W serves a purpose there beyond "toning down the blood"), and I also think that given the individual film's stylistic, thematic, and intertextual components that they work quite well as separate but linked pieces. In a way, I see putting them together as akin to taking Grindhouse apart: there's a logic to and in the separation of the parts that risks being lost -- maybe for worse, but hey, maybe for better. In any case, given how lousy KBV1 looked in SD, I'll certainly be adding these to my collection.

I don't disagree. I just think that Disney would do a better job. Weinstein's just need to focus on getting back into the HD business in general...starting with releasing 1408.

Rumor is that they might be back soon. Starting with The Mist on Blu-ray August 5th if the reports are correct

Well Lonesome Dove: Collector's Edition is slated for an August 5th release so we'll see if more titles from them get announced.

This is awesome. I wanted to see that movies in theaters, but held off for watching in HD. Then the Weinsteins pulled a disappearing act, and I was left out on it. I will likely do a blind buy on that movie.

I can't decide yet. I will have to watch my R2 versions, which I have yet to do on my 60 inch tv. I might have to get them if there is a drastic difference, though I will be sad to see all that extra color go.

Good question. I think that the b&w style was pretty cool, but I had heard that it was done to meet with mpaa rating standards. Not sure what Tarantino intended for the film, but I do know that the black and white was pretty slick when I saw it.

I have the Japanese version on DVD, and really comparing them, either is just fine. The Jap version is fun for the extra blood plus a couple extra beats in that end fight scene, but the B&W in the US version cool also. In anycase these are an absolute must!

That's correct. Originally they were in color, but in order to get the "R" rating he made them B&W, at which point he decided it looked pretty neat that way and now says it's his preferred cut.

It would be nice to have both on the disc.

A pet peeve of mine is a random black and white scene. I don't mind a black and white flashback or a black and white with purpose, but a random one (or something imposed by the MPAA) is meaningless and is less than superficial. It is not artistic, especially when forced by censors. It was like in Death Proof when that scene suddenly shifted to black and white for no reason whatsoever. I will stick to the originally intended color scene because it not only makes sense, but it also holds true to the original source material being "homaged."

Two things:

1) Has anyone noticed that the MPAA rating given on Amazon's "KB Combo" page is NC-17? Certainly just a mistake, but one could dream...

2) Does anyone know what, if anything, is special about Amazon's "KB Combo"? It says it's an exclusive. I presume that the two regular editions of the films are simply shrinkwrapped together. But I'm hoping for an outer slipcase for the two, like the one Best Buy had for the SD editions when KB2 was released (I sold my SD copies, but kept the slipcase; it's quite nice).

It's just the two discs shrink wrapped together, ala their National Treasure 1&2 "exclusive" set. They also list the SD DVDs that have been out forever as NC-17, so I wouldn't read anything into that.

For all of us worried about a repeat of "Gangs of NY", some wonderful, wonderful news from Robert Harris on HTF. Whether or not you're holding out for a "definitive edition" of whatever sort, it seems that Disney got this transfer very, very right this time, and after the mess of a transfer we got on DVD (especially for V1), this should be the first time these films will look right on home video. Can't wait for the 9th!

A few words about...™ Kill Bill: Volumes 1 & 2 -- in Blu-ray - Home Theater Forum

"After Gangs of New York being revisited by Disney on Blu-ray, I was concerned about what might occur with Mr. Tarantino's Kill Bill epic.

After screening them this evening, I can tell you that I need not have been.

The two Kill Bills have been meticulously brought to Blu-ray, with color, densities and black & white images intact, and with a resounding soundtrack ready to clean the lint from one's speakers.

Whether there may have been a bit of digital image manipulation, possibly inclusive of some grain reduction, I cannot be certain, but what I can report is that the films on Blu-ray, enlarged to 100"+, reproduce the look of the film as viewed in the cinema. There should be no reason to nit-pick here.

This is brilliant filmmaking, with superbly reproduced imagery and uncompressed audio delivered via the Blu-ray system. The release should make every home theater aficionado thrilled to add them to a quality film library.

If I have any gripe with Disney, it is that they still refuse to acknowledge the production date of their films, even as a part of copyright. All that we are offered is "2008 Blu-ray Release." For the record they were released in 2003 and 2004.

For educational and historical accuracy it would be nice if the public had easy access to this information.

For anyone with a love of the cinema, Kill Bill: Volumes 1 & 2 should be a required viewing.

Disney has come through with extremely high quality software that makes Blu-ray shine as it should.

Highly Recommended.

RAH"

Good to hear Kill Bill looks good. The DVDs were some of the worst of the bad Miramax years, so I have been debating my pre-order, especially after the Gangs of New York problem. I'll let the order stand with confidence now.

zomg! I am so in love with these movies again after seeing them on blu-ray.

The audio on the first one is fantastic! Vol 2 is a quality soundtrack as well, but has a less active soundstage overall. I even enjoyed seeing vol 2 more since I hadn't in a while and realized I was giving it a bad rap for a long time. It is a better movie that I remembered in the theater.

They really hit it out of the park with this realease. The only complaint I have is that we don't have the color version of KB1. I would love to see the House of Blue Leaves scene in color in HD. Any other regions getting it that are compatible with US PS3s?

I haven't seen vol. 2 yet, but I was extremely impressed with Volume 1's transfer and audio quality. I am thinking that any movies in Japan and Australia will work with the ps3, but I could be wrong.

Japan, sure, but I doubt Australian releases will work in a U.S. PS3. Japan's region A, just like the states, but Australia is region B.

Any movie from a region A country should work on a U.S. PS3.
