I'm becoming kinda bored with High Def
Anyone in the same boat?
I bought into HD DVD early and rode that train for a while. I realized I didn't want to become a rabid fanboy so I bought into Blu-ray. HD DVD died and it wasn't a really big deal to me so I switched over to Blu-ray completely. Now it seems like the thrill is gone, I have all I want barring any great sales, and I'm just waiting for a few BD releases here-and-there in the coming months. Though I'm not really on fire with anticipation over anything in particular. After buying an Oppo DVD player and not many DVDs at all in over a year, I'm finding myself buying more and more DVDs and looking forward to watching them over any BDs/HDs currently. It's just beginning to seem pretty dumb to fixate so much on a few hundred High Def releases when there's tens of thousands of DVDs in the U.S. alone. Plus like I mentioned elsewhere I just bought 16 DVDs in the past three days for the price of 4-5 "in-store priced" Blu-rays. ![]() Don't get me wrong, I like Blu-ray (and try to avoid buying DVDs that have the potential to be on BD anytime soon), but maybe it's really not my thing after all... ![]() |

I get very excited over high def releases OF FILMS I REALLY LIKE. So for the most part I still mostly buy DVD. It's not because of the technology, I'm just as exited as ever over HD, it's just that there are far more movies I'm interested in released on SD DVD.

I have actually stopped buying sd-dvd's for the most part. If I am going to spend the money I want it to be in HD and most things will eventually make it there anyway, so even TV shows that get released I can see being in HD, especially newer ones. I dont really have much motivation to buy in SD.

I figure if it's the choice between seeing a film on DVD now (especially if it's a solid DVD releases and/or decently priced) or potentially waiting years for the film to arrive on Blu-ray, I'd much rather opt to see the film now. Not to mention there are also countless films/shows/etc. that simply wouldn't benefit at all from HD with what they were shot on. |

There are still tons and tons of movies I need to see in HD that aren't out yet, I still get very excited over coming releases. DVD... really after Star Wars finally came out, that was the last excitement for me in that format, so it'll be a while before BD becomes by-the-numbers boring.

Yeah, but that's just using DSP trickery for 2-D movies. I mean a real 3-D standard for use with movies that were made for 3-D.

This is true, but I'm curious to see the results(Office Space in 3D woooo!). Most movies that were made for 3D stink anyway, and Lucas has mentioned he'd like to release the Star Wars movies in 3D(and hey the Hannah Montana blu ray will be 3D lol).

I'm not so much bored with High-def as I am with the current crap err crop of hollywood releases. The film industry is shelling out crap time & time again & the only thing I do like lately is catalog films.

I was bored with buying movies years ago... BD gave me a shot in the arm about it, and I collected again for a few months, but now I'm back to normal.
I mostly rent, and when a BD or HD version on Xbox Live is available, I will go HD, but that's about it. |

you keep on buying it.
I personally am still excited about titles in HD. I rarely get dvds now, except for tv series that I know won't be on high def for some time. DVD doesn't cut it for me anymore. None are very "solid" now that I watch most of my TV/movie content in Highdef. It's hard for me to go back and watch blurry programming.

Bingo! This is exactly how I feel. I go look at all the new releases and usually walk away empty. I just dont see anything I really feel I want to own. I am also finding a lot of catalog title I want are not out yet in HD so I sit and wait. The other problem is cost of certain titles. I was going to buy Cloverfield the other day, but the damn Blu version in Canada was $39.99. It will be a cold day in hell before I spend $40 on a single title. |

I don’t really get being "bored with HD." I can understand if you’re bored with the current cinema, but how can you be bored with the technology? What has changed? If you don’t see the difference, fine, but some of you were Blu-ray’s biggest supporters. So, again, what changed? There are so many great films coming to the format. Just in the next three months we have Batman Begins, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Dark City, Cool Hand Luke and a bunch of wonderful Criterion titles, not to mention TV seasons. What more do you want? It takes time to get all of our favorite movies out, and we certainly don’t want them to rush.
Is this just a fickle reaction to a technology you’ve lost interest in? Seriously, what would it take to reinvigorate your excitement?

I'm still excited to buy the 40 or so movies I really love in HD... I was just watching Sixer Feet Under the other night and the artifacting really was terrible... never noticed that before.
I'm just saying the brief "OH MY GOD MUST BUY MOVIES AGAIN!!!" thing BD did for me is over. |

For me, I think my spending has increases slightly, as I see more and more titles that I want. I would say the options are even bigger with Paramount, Universal, and now the Weinsteins on board (though I did have hd-dvd as well). But I am eagerly anticipating Iron Man on blu-ray. I have replaced quite a few of my old dvds with blu-rays. I am hopeful for certain favorites to come out in high def. Just imagine Moulin Rouge in high definition picture and sound!! I am far from bored.

I think they really dropped the ball on blu-ray...In the beginning they were talking about capacity and that one disc could hold like 3 or 4 movies...and now they're still giving us multiple-disc box sets....and bare bones releases of older movies that should have a shit load of features...
I think HD DVD was a better value, personally...now blu-ray is just trying to rip people off touting the superior video and lossless sound, but not giving any other value...There are a ton of standard DVD releases of the same movies that have much more value and are cheaper... I just think it's a big let down...I hope they can get their act together and live up to what they promised...

HD content is all about better picture and audio quality, which BD seems to be providing.
I'm not always excited about the available movies, but it is a new format and it's taking some time to get the movies I'm interested in out. But content IS starting to show up, and I'm excited about it. As for value it's just really hard to beat SD DVD.

I still haven't gotten into Blu-Ray yet, despite having my HDTV for 1.5 years now. I'm waiting for that surge of titles that I'm interested in to come out before I get into the format. That could happen this fall when Iron Man and Dark Knight will likely come out, but I don't know if that's enough to make me commit.

The lack of extras just doesn't bother me anymore, unless it's a film I REALLY like. If it's not outtakes I usually don't care, even deleted scenes have become ho hum to me.

I feel so ripped off watching my movies in 1080p and listening to my movies in lossless audio. I would have been so much better off with weak DD+ tracks only, as was the standard for hd-dvd. Universal is a great example of a studio that is releasing movies with lossless now on blu-ray, and the movies are sometimes $10 cheaper when you don't have the crappy combo disc to deal with.

I like how they kept everything the same in terms of menus & options except now they are all Blue. What I won't miss is the Uni screen saver. Oh & on the PS3 anyways navigating through well anything is light years faster than any HD DVD player. There was talk from tvshowsondvd a few years ago about how they could have crammed a whole 480p season on Blu-Ray or HD DVD but that never happened thank goodness. I'm for best video & audio & hate, yes hate extra content. ![]()

Actually the screensaver is still on their releases, it popped up during Doomsday last night. It's the same, except like the letters have a blue reflection. Worst is, the PS3 play button won't get you out of it(operation not available here), had to use the directional buttons to get rid of it.
