why isnt there a George Lucas commentary? No George Lucas commentary = no sale! blah!
just kidding. its a buy for me. I dumped the DVD special edition that came out a few years back when I saw how little had been done to restore the picture. I can appreciate a little grain and dirt on a print which can give that film-in-theater experience, but that level of dirt was inexcusable.

I was able to view the first 20 minutes of the new restored Blu-ray transfer of The Godfather this morning on some of the latest and greatest flatpanel displays.
The product is nothing short of amazing. A truly stunning transfer that both looks like film (no DNR/EE crap) and is extremely detailed for HD presentation. I am floored and can't wait for the set!

That's great to hear Ruined, but damn you! That was my hold out point to deciding whether I would buy it or now. Now I gotta.

Hear that huge whooshing sound? The collective sigh of relief that these films have finally been done right on home video. I'm counting the days, minutes, seconds...

Lots of reviews out there; for a start:
HDDb - Godfather Collection, The High Definition Reviews They look and sound fantastic -- given the source material. I can hear the anti-grain, "Close Encounters sucks!" crowd already, bemoaning the fact that these don't look like looking out your window. But they're perfect, and the restoration work is nothing short of awe-inspiring (before watching ANY of the films, everyone should watch the restoration feature on disc 4 to truly appreciate just how extensive the work involved was, and how close to the original elements these transfers are).
