The Dark Knight Blu-ray talk from Nolan

Damn the movie isn't out yet but already Nolan is talking Blu-ray release. The big thing he mention will be how the IMAX scenes will play out on the disc

Quote:
While speaking with iF Magazine, 'The Dark Knight' director Christopher Nolan mentioned that the inevitable of Blu-ray will feature the IMAX shifted aspect ratio. He commented, "The Blu-ray, in particular, will be able to actually use the shifted aspect ratios as it appears on the IMAX screen because the 16:9 aspect ratio is sufficiently different from the 2:4 that you'll actually see a shift on the Blu-ray."

He continued, "The resolution on the Blu-ray is clear enough that you can actually see difference in grain structure and sharpness. So I think it will be quite spectacular."

The film has still not hit theaters, so the Blu-ray is far off, but its interesting to learn that the high definition format is exciting directors.

Are there different scenes for the Imax version? And does he mean the aspect ratio will change from 2:40.1 to 16:9? Not really getting this.

There are 4 scenes in the movie which were shot for IMAX with their cameras. So when these scenes occur the screen will be completely filled and for the rest of the film you will see it in its regular 2.40:1 Scope ratio. Basically if you have the Blu-ray version of Batman Begins you will see how they did the IMAX prologue for the disc and we are to expect pretty much that and the other 3 scenes to play out the same on The Dark Knight Blu-ray disc. All the rest of the film will be seen in the Scope ratio like in theaters.

I was wondering about just this the other day. I am wondering how much of a difference it will make if you have a screen smaller than 65".

I am hoping the disc will also contain the 6 minute bank robbery prequel that was shown in IMAX before I Am Legend.

Why will the Blu-ray, in particular, be able to actually use the shifted aspect ratios?

4 or 6? For some reason 6 sticks in my bat skull.

As far as seeing a difference in these scenes versus the rest of the movie...

....go see it in an IMAX theater! I know I plan to. Eventually.

I don't know, but I read that on regular theater screens the scenes in IMAX will also look better, crisper and visually awesome.

It is 6 scenes according to this:

Quote:
The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience features six sequences filmed with IMAX® cameras, the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras, marking a revolutionary integration of the two film formats. The worldwide premiere of the film will be held at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13 with IMAX in New York on July 14th, the first time a Hollywood feature film has premiered in an IMAX theatre.

I'm sure it will since that is the opening to the film.

I hope not, because on mine the "regular" aspect ratio portion of the prologue was squished quite a bit before the IMAX stuff started. Granted, it was only the opening titles, but it was not at 2:40:1 ratio.

Am I the only one who thinks this is mostly gimmicky nonsense? I really hate the idea of my aspect ratio switching 6 times during the film--how could that not be distracting? Maybe if the whole film was shot in IMAX . . .

Give me a nice big scope screen over IMAX any day.

And, before anyone jumps on it, I do, in fact, recognize the irony of that statement.

I too would actually prefer the aspect ratio to stay in scope for the entire movie when i watch it too on Blu-ray. Hopefully they will have branching versions/option to enjoy either way. Kind of like I Am Legend offered with the 2 different endings.

Yep, branching is always an option except we usually lose something in the process.. like a TrueHD track or something.

Remember studio's... Extra's come before video & audio quality.

Sorry.. still pissed at New Line for selling out to WB

Indeed there had better be a branching option. With the masking I just developed for the 2.35:1 ratio I definitly do not want it shifting to 16:9 at various scenes. I just saw this at the Imax, quite an experience, but I see no reason to see it that way at home. And actually I thought the Imax format was 4:3, so wouldn't the BD actually shift to 4:3?

Nice, I think it would be nice if they did a flipside of that cover that had the joker version of that pose.

Considering how Batman Begins was, I am looking forward to DK on blu-ray. It should be incredible.

Looks like some details are being released for the 2-disc set. It's from a Spain site they get their info from but WB is region free so i would think they will be the same extras here.

From Blu-ray.com

Quote:
The PlanetaHD site from Spain is reporting the first detailed information about the audio and supplements to be included on Warner's 'The Dark Knight' Blu-ray Disc release. The highly anticipated title will have a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack and will be issued in a two-disc edition.

In addition to the movie itself, the first disc will include the "Gotham Discovered: The Creation of a Scene" extra where Director Christopher Nolan and his collaborators unveil details on the planning of the movie, including stunt d
