Blu-ray.com - Even More LOTR Rumblings

Quote:
Our good friend Bill Hunt is at it again, and today he has more information regarding the upcoming release of the 'Lord of the Rings' films. This bad news is that when Warner delivers the films sometime late next year, they will be of the theatrical versions of the films. The good news is that this decision was made because director Peter Jackson wants to save the extended versions for a super Blu-ray boxset to be released near the theatrical release of 'The Hobbit'.

With the original extended cut box sets being of the utmost quality, I have high hopes that Jackson will once again produce a magnificent Blu-ray box set for the extended cuts of the film. Until then (which will be about two years if 'The Hobbit' stays on schedule, enjoy the theatricals cuts on Blu-ray sometime next year.
I'm such a LOTR whore, I'll still buy both on blu. I can't wait!

What he said.

Waiting until The Hobbit is released, pure cruetly for the true fans. Sad to see Jackson seduced by the darkside like Lucas. At best I'll Netflix the theatrical Blu Ray editions.

I'm not sure what the hard feelings are for. The studio and director announce, well in advance, that there will be two box sets. They do this so you won't feel burned after buying the first set. And yet, you still feel ripped off. You can buy one, or both. The studio isn't suggesting you have to buy the first one, in order to get the second one.

And waiting for The Hobbit is a financial decision. More people will buy it. That's basic marketing. That's how most DVD releases happened over the last decade. And you know what? By then, Blu-Ray authoring will be less problematic, more people will own player, and video codecs will be optimized to provide higher playback quality. I can wait.

Well it's true this is a lot less devious than what studios have done with other movies. It's more just being bitter about having to wait 2 more years for the ultimate HD experience.

You'll be surprised how fast those 2 years fly by.

I'm not angry about it, but I'm going to hold off for the extended editions. I already own both versions on DVD, and I never watch the theatrical versions when I feel like a LOTR fix.

Yeah people who get angry at stuff like this are either stupid or actually believe they have to get both. However if they are more than willing to get both then they are part of the large tribe that are the true fans.

The stupid ones are the ones that think everyone wants the EE of the films. Some people out there actually like to have a choice. If people didn't expect 2 separate releases they have got to be really dim. I wouldn't blame Jackson on this one. I think Warner is just carrying on the fine tradition New Line started by dragging the LOTR movies out.

First off, I pretty much agree with everything videoworx said.

Second, I don't even consider this a double-dip. It's not like they're releasing a sub-par edition now and following that up with a special edition later - but of the same movie. Since these movies are very different in their two incarnations, I consider each entry in the series two different movies altogether.

I have owned both the theatrical version and extended editions. I prefer the extended version so I am going to hold off for those on Blu Ray. I guess being new to Blu hasn't spoiled me yet so I can still stand to watch SD DVD.

I wouldn't say that people getting upset at not getting the EE next year are necessarily unintelligent. To me it's not that the theatrical version is getting released, it's that the EE version isn't getting released till 2 years or so after that. I don't think anyone upset by this would be mad if both editions were released at the same time. Regardless, I don't think it's an issue of intelligence as to how they feel about the release.
