Best Live Album?

Back in the 70s there was quite the glut of live albums. Lately the live album seems to have fallen out of favor, with the exception of the 'notable' release of 50+ live CDs from Pearl Jam.....or perhaps the "Metallica" disks.

So, does anybody have a particular live recording that they are fond of for whatever reason?

My vote would go to two 'old school' albums.....Peter Frampton's "Frampton Comes Alive" and "Cheap Trick at Budokan". Why? Because live albums had never been done that well before.....they totally eclipsed the studio versions.

Oh man, I gotta go old-school on ya and throw out Judas Priest's "Unleashed In The East", live in Japan! Sure, alot of it was supposedly "doctored" in the studio, but I suspect alot more "live" albums are doctored after the fact than aren't. That album was worn out on my old high-school era boom box.

The one that started it all. And still the best.....live album.....ever.

KISS-ALIVE

Okay, so maybe The Who's Live at Leeds(also great) came first, but this album really started the craze.

For me it's Les Bains Douches by Joy Division... Although it was missing "She's Lost Control", that's the only negative thing I can say about it...

Although is the token classic in classic rockology, I get a lot of enjoyment out of Bob Dylan's 1966 Royal Albert Hall concert. The CD comes in a nice package too.

Oh man, you know it. Nothing matches the raw intensity of the first Alive album. Alive II is indeed a classic but they didn't sound as hungry as before. I get pissed when I hear these albums and think of the punchline they've become. Revenge(1992)was their last truly great album Their post-makeup days were pretty spotty, but I thought Revenge was a HUGE step back in the right direction.

Oh well, back on topic. I usually listen to Alive and Alive II back to back. It's almost like being there, isn't it?

I agree that Revenge was a BIG step forward for KISS back when it came out. I remember watching Gene and Paul get interviewed on Head Bangers Ball right after the release and Gene said "we realized that everything we have been making for the past ten years was basically pop-crap!"

I wouldn't say it was ALL crap, but I will agree that there were many songs that had that distinct odor to them. (All of Hot In The Shade basically)

Though these days I have to be in the mood to listen to any of the Alives (Though Alive III doesn't even compare to the other two) but when I do listen to them, it brings back great memories of when I first became a KISS fan, back on August 16th, 1977.

Hey it's almost my silver anniversary of being a KISS fan!

Either the first disc of the Springsteen live box-set or Genesis "Seconds Out" IMO.

Ok, look - there shouldn't be a discussion on this topic, but there is one and only one love album that could be called the greatest. That being the Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense. Prefect in every sense of the word.

Okay, I'll take the bait. You're completely right, SolidSnakeASS. There shouldn't be any discussion whatsoever about love albums.

I hadn't really thought about it before, but I guess live albums are rare these days.

Here are some of my favorites:

Morphine: Bootleg Detroit
Depeche Mode 101 - the entire tour leading up to the concert at the rose bowl, with the fans on tour with them. quite a media spectacle.
Metallica S&M
Cypress Hill - Live at the Fillmore
Alice in Chains - Unplugged
Charlie Parker & Dizzy Gillespie - Diz and Bird at Carnegie Hall

I'll back up Genesis' Seconds Out, and add Genesis Live, when Petey was still in the band.

Also kudos to Yessongs-the old TRIPLE-live album, and those Roger Dean-scapes...groooooovy.

Springsteen's live Box Set is great
Monty Python Live at City Center (HEY, it is LIVE)
Marillion's La Gazza Ladra, which includes their entire third album "Misplaced Childhood" played in its entirety. Also their "Made Again" which includes their OTHEr concept album, "Brave" in ITS entirety.
Roger Waters performance of the Wall Live in Berlin

The only groups to come out with pure live albums that havent been doctored in the studio is:

Iron Maiden - Live After Death
Iced Earth - Alive In Athens

I have a special affinity for Live Phish Vol. 5 because I was at that show. Also Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys and Live At The Fillmore East. And John Coltrane's Afro Blue Impressions.
