RIAA Sued: Shoe's on the Other Foot

I found a reference to this article on AVS Forum:

But not until today have we felt that "ah-ha" moment, where someone has decided to sue the RIAA. Taking on the recording industry giant is file-sharing network Lime Wire, alleging "antitrust violations, consumer fraud, and other misconduct."

According to court documents, Lime Wire alleges that the RIAA's "goal was simple: to destroy any online music distribution service they did not own or control, or force such services to do business with them on exclusive and/or other anticompetitive terms so as to limit and ultimately control the distribution and pricing of digital music, all to the detriment of consumers."

This should definitely be interesting. After the Supreme Court ruled against Grokster last year, the RIAA has seemingly had the upper-hand in dealing with file-sharing networks. With Lime Wire's counterclaims and little support for the RIAA, anything could happen.

I also think this is interesting since Lime Wire itself is simply a transport for electronic distribution of... whatever. The Lime Wire software doesn't rip CDs by itself nor does it "decide" what to make available for downloading and what not to make available.

If I'm a musician and I recorded a song I wrote via Lime Wire, there's nothing wrong with that.

Hmmm.... (strokes Pei Mei beard)

Peace...
