Ok, so I'm staring this thread for 2 reasons. One, because we didn't have one and two, because of the below rumor.

Prepare to be blown away because the folks over at "Iesb.net" recently dropped a doozy of a rumor. According to their sources, the man behind DARK CITY, THE CROW and the "not so great but really not bad even though Will Smith pushed his schtick to previously unreached heights of annoyance" I, ROBOT Alex Proyas may be looking to direct the much-delayed IRON MAN adaptation. Nick Cassavetes had been attached to direct for a long time but recently dropped out when the film's rights reverted back to Marvel. When the IESB recently chatted with Don Murphy, who's producing IRON MAN, Murphy said the film "needs to be made" and they were hoping to find a "Sam Raimi-style" director. Of course, by "needs to be made", he likely meant "needs to make tons of money" and by "Sam Raimi-style" director, he likely meant "a director who, like Raimi, will make us millions and millions of dollars". Proyas can most certainly fulfill those requirements. What do you guys think?

Alex Proyas rules. I Robot was a pleasantly enjoyable sci-fi flick that exceeded my expectations, and the Crow is one of my favorites.

Can't argue with Reaver's choice of George Clooney.

I loved Swingers, liked Made and I thought he did a pretty good job with Zathura. I think, if nothing else, he'd respect the material enough to not make it ridiculous.

Iron Man will indeed be my next movie. Marvel is distributing it through Paramount which, for those of you playing at home, is also the studio that is developing John Carter of Mars. That project is still a huge priority for me and I am still very much attached to it both as a director and producer.

Iron Man is the first Marvel production under its new distribution arrangement. My hope is that this will be refelected in the quality of the movie. Their films are self-financed and, as a result, don't have to run the typical creative gauntlet of studio development. What Marvel says, goes.

As far as specifics, it will be set in the present and, as you would probably expect, includes a version of the origin story.

I have set up a MySpace discussion group. I will post new info there as things come together. The internet is full of faulty info. I wanted to have at least one place where the facts would be correct.

would have preferred Alex Proyas. I think hes better suited for this type of movie, especially with the action scenes it will require.

They need to make a decent Witchblade movie where they stick with the original artists rendering for costumes...that would be wicked!

If they do make a movie of that they'll save it for the people who made Blood Rayne. Which means it'll probably turn out just as bad. If it's not a very well known character then don't expect every single comic book character to get a movie and if it does then it won't get a good treatment.

John Carter of Mars has already been through the Hollywood ringer, tho most don;t know it.
Read up on William Stout's (IIRC) interview in Comics Interview (?) about the failed JCoM movie that was "directed" by John McTiernan.
He wanted to do it almost all CGI, back in like 1993 I think - it woulda cost 200 million back then. Stout thought it was because McTiernan didn;t want to do the film, and this was a way he could back out, since the Hollywood contracts are such that if it doesn't get made in a certain amount of time, than he gets paid anyway.

I think Favrou did a good job with Zathura - just saw it this weekend.

The upcoming film version of Iron Man, to be released by Paramount, has just had a tentative release date set: 2 May 2008.

The film's director is Jon Favreau, who previously directed Elf and Zathura.

Meanwhile, Sony's Ghost Rider is scheduled for 16 February 2007. The film stars Nicholas Cage. David S. Goyer, co-writer of Batman Begins and writer / director of the Blade series, is current credited as the film's screenwriter.

Next summer should have two big Marvel movies: the third Spider-Man film and the second Fantastic Four film.

Sony's Spider-Man 3 is scheduled for 4 May 2007. The film reportedly sees both Venom and Sandman as Spidey's villains, as well as the introduction of love interest Gwen Stacy and a possible appearance of Norman Osborn's son as either a second Green Goblin or as Hobgoblin.

Fox's Fantastic Four 2 is scheduled for 15 June 2007. Reportedly, the film will see the introduction of the Silver Surfer and the coming of Galactus, sure to set fire to any fanboy's heart.
Sony's 30 Days of Night, based on the popular independent horror comic, is slated for 19 October 2007 release.

Other comic book movies in production, like Watchmen and Sin City 2, have not yet been scheduled.

Update: Director Jon Favreau has now CONFIRMED Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man on his MySpace Blog here. Here's what he said exactly: "It is true. Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark. I am about as excited as I can be. I saw what he can do and he is extremely enthusiastic about playing Stark. I can say with absolute certainty that there is no better choice. The humor and emotional dimension he brings truly raises the bar on this project. Get ready.".

Agreed. Excellent casting choice. Downey Jr. was excellent in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I now hope they make as good a choice for a villian, whichever character it may be. All the best superhero movies usually stand out because of the villian and who plays it.
