The Dark Knight

Release Date: 7/18/08

Director: Christopher Nolan

Writer(s): David S. Goyer, Jonathan Nolan

Cast: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman

I thought I'd start a new thread with this kick ass news!!

Quote:
Whatever trepidation there was on Heath Ledger's part to assume the role of The Joker has apparently subsided as we've just received word from the studio that the sequel to the utterly kick ass BATMAN BEGINS will be titled THE DARK KNIGHT and will have Heath Ledger taking on the iconic role of the The Joker. Christopher Nolan is back directing and presumably a few faces from the original will be back, including Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox (although we only have confirmation of Heath Ledger as The Joker). It also goes without saying that Christian Bale is back as Batman. After the endless stream of names that have been bandied around for the role of Joker, we can finally put that rumor to rest. What do you guys think of the casting? Or the sequel name? Some of you were probably rooting for BATMAN CONTINUES but THE DARK KNIGHT does have a certain ominous charm.

Man i pegged the name down for the sequel last year and i'm happy to see its official now. Heath could be interesting to see as the Joker and is they go with the Penguin i really do hope Phillip Seymour Hoffman takes the role.

WHY DOES 2008 HAVE TO BE SO FAR AWAY

Awesome name, I hope the poster doesn't even say Batman on it...

That would indeed be cool, but let's not kid ourselves, you know the official/poster title will be Batman: The Dark Knight.

Or at least I'd be very surprised if it wasn't.

Yeah, just the Batman emblem and "The Dark Knight" across it. THAT would be cool.

As for Ledger as the Joker, I'm excited to see it. He was amazing as Ennis in Brokeback Mountain, so I know he can completely lose himself in a role if he wants to. Can't wait for the film to hit!

Yeah, if Hoffman got onboard my anticipation for this would officially go off the scale.

I love the title and am glad WB has "officially" kicked off the sequel. Production leaks can't be that far away.

I hope so, but I doubt since it she wasn't in the comics for the longest time. In fact, wasn't she recently added only because she had become so popular on the cartoon, where she had been created?

You are correct, sir. Harley was created by Paul Dini for Batman: The Animated Series, and proved to be so popular she was quickly introduced into the continuity of the regular comic books.

As for who should play her (although I seriously doubt she'd fit into Nolan's gritty, "realistic" Batman universe), two words: Kate Hudson.

Heath Ledger is going to be amazing in this.

Just wait.

Love the title too. Sounds so cool.

1. Agreed on the casting

2. She'd have to be slightly less cartoonish, but the core idea of a psychologist who goes nuts falling in love with the Joker is perfectly doable.

For a teaser poster i would love to see a Joker Playing Card slightly slanted on a poster. Have it a bit beaten up with smudge marks and maybe a slight bit or blood dripping off the bottom tip of the card

Catch phrase "Joker's are wild Summer 2008" and have it in a Batman Logo.

I do NOT want a Harley Quinn, at least not in this movie. NO NO NO. It would not fit with Nolan's Batman at all, IMO.

Sure she could, if handled right. It's all in the direction. Just because Nolan is creating a darker and more gritty Batman than Burton doesn't mean that a character like Harley Quinn wouldn't fit in hat world. Just make her humor more edgy and vicious.

And as for Kate Hudson playing her, uh... no. She doesn't have the figure for it, and I would get someone a bit younger.

I just don't see it. The core of her character is the bubbly-happy girl who contrasts with Joker's more sinister humor. Quinn has a sinister side too, of course, but it's a core part of her character to come off much more dopey/giggly/cute. As fun as that can be, I don't see it working in Nolan's sort of movie. Tim Burton could have worked it out probably. I wouldn't mind being proven wrong, but... I doubt we'll see it happen.

And Hudson is too old? What is she, like 25 or something? Harley Quinn is supposed to be a Doctor you know...

WTF? Hudson has a spectacuar figure (especially for a new mom), and she's, what, 25?

Plus, just look at that face! I can totally imagine it covered with white pancake makeup as she squeals "Sure thing, Mistah 'J'!"

Yeah, Hudson is about perfect. Perfect look, perfect age (old enough to be a professional woman, young enough to be cute and quirky). I don't want the character in it, unless they totally change her which would ruin the point, but if I did, Hudson would be the OBVIOUS choice.

Last I looked at her she had the hips, chest, and ass of a teenaged boy. No, I don't consider that a spectacular figure. She is cute, there's no doubt about that, but the cartoon character is very curvy. Kate is not.

Kate's curvy, she just doesn't have big tits. I don't think Harvey Quinn requires big tits to be well represented on screen.

Actually, honestly, I think the skinny little cute girl thing is much more like the Harley Quinn I know. I don't know where you're getting Salma Hayek from. She's much more of a "real woman with some meat on her bones" vibe, and I don't think Harley is that. She's always doing cartwheels and shit... she's small and athletic... flexible... cute and tiny. That's her character.

I leave open the possibility that the image my mind is creating is not the same image we get from the TV screen. I wasn't never that big a viewer of thw show, so it's always possible I'm remembering her incorrectly.

Yeah, no big deal really, but I think MJ and I are right on this one. Still, none of this really matters because the chances of Nolan putting her in the movie is the same as the chances I'll get laid tonight, which is to say, almost nil. In my opinion, anyway...

Nolan could go the route of showing Harley for what she is, and what was rarely shown in the cartoon except in one episode specifically I can remember, but she's an abused woman. Show that she's been ringed in by his charm, and then abused to teh point of fearing to ever leave him. That could be an interesting character, and her craziness is no worse than some of the other Bat villians. I think she could be worked if you toned down the cartwheeling, etc. Just make her a deranged sidekick who is a bit goofy and totally in love, and in fear, with the Joker. Could be weird and fun. Just don't change her completely into an idiot like they did Bane.

If they make a lot of hefty changes to her character, in the way you suggest, I could see her working as a side character. I just don't know if they're willing to do that.
