X-FILES Film Sequel

hollywood.com
Quote:
David Duchovny has confirmed a sequel to the X-Files movie is in the works--with himself and Gillian Anderson reprising the characters that made them famous.

The actor, who played Agent Fox Mulder in both the cult TV series and 1998 movie, reveals X-Files creator Chris Carter and writer Frank Spotnitz are busy working on a script for the new film.

The news comes after weeks of speculation surrounding Anderson's involvement in the project.

Duchovny says, "This week, they're starting some kind of road towards doing it (the film). Gillian and I both want to be in it now. We're happy to do it.

"At this point all of the kind of fatigue and anxiety that we had towards the end of a nine-year run is gone."

He jokes, "We've forgotten why we hate one another and can only remember why we love one another and we're very happy to go back.

"Chris and Frank are going over the story. It's a story they've had for a few years but we haven't all settled on the fact that we wanted to do it, so now they're hammering it out."

I am now a happy, happy man. I was actually thinking about X-Files 2 the other day and wondering if it would ever happen.

Come on Summer 2008 !

I'm a major X-Files fanboy and this is great news... I hope they make it a standalone story, since the last couple years of the show the story got kind of... dumb.

I was always a bigger fan of the standalone supernatural mystery episodes anyway. The conspiracy stuff was fine, and I liked the first movie, but I always thought "X-Files" was at its best when Mulder and Scully would jet off to some suburb where creepy shit was happening.

Indeed. Although, considering how the awful last episode of the show ended (with M&S on the lam and aliens taking over the FBI, or something), I honestly don't know how they'd handle a stand-alone MOTW story, unless they simply ignored the last season of the show. Still, it's been long enough to allow fans to forget how crappy the series ended and focus on "the good old days". Bring it on!

I've read somewhere recently (last couple of days) that when interviewed, Gillian Anderson mentioned that Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz want to do a "standalone" episode movie, and that Chris wants to go full horror for this movie.

We shall see...

cool news.

I remember reading about this a year or so ago (dont remember if we had a thread)

I agree, standalone would be much better...the story just got repetitive.

After not making it as an actor on his own right, David Duchovny needs to earn a paycheck on the role that he did best and was made famous for...and the people cheered! Glad to see that they are doing this!

They could do that, or set it earlier during the show's run, I guess... I guess whatever they do, someone will bitch about it on the Internet.

I am soooooo up for this. I have been waiting for years. Total fanboy. I even have Mulder and Scully action figures at my desk here in my office, and bought each season when it came out for a ton of money (not the cheap price they are now ).

A standalone would be great. I love the mythology, but the freak of the week were great episodes.

On another note, I like Doggett a lot. I thought he was a great character. DOn't know if he would do a cameo as he is busy with The Unit right now, but I would love to see him in it. I really liked the role reversal of Scully when she took on the Mulder role and Doggett took on the Scully role (seasons 8 and 9).

I wouldn't mind seeing Doggett in the new X-Files movie, but please, no Monica Reyes!

More news from Scully herself on July 17:

GILLIAN ANDERSON IN GIFFONI, ‘I WILL MAKE X FILES 2’

"X-Files 2, the movie, is coming". These words were of Gillian Anderson, the Scully of the popular American Tv series and guest of the 37 GFF. "

The series has not been made for five years, and the producers have no intention to make another- explained Anderson – but they are indeed projecting a new episode for the cinema". The first "X-Files" movie was released in 1998.

"It is very difficult to work for the cinema when you interpret such a characterizing role like Scully – added Anderson - when I work for the cinema I try to detach myself from the X-Files character". .....
.... But now The X Files legal wrangles have now been resolved and speaking to The Independent last night from a film festival in Italy, Anderson confirmed that she was set to begin filming sometime between October and January. "The script is imminent and we are meant to start doing it by the end of next year and beginning of this year," she said. "I have been for it from the beginning and I have been positive about it from the beginning."

Two more films, one called The Smell of Apples, which is due to be made in South Africa and a German co-production called Helen are also in the offing, although her availability might be compromised by the new X Files project.

None the less, she said, the chance to play Scully again is irresistible. "It was not something I longed for on a regular basis but as soon as we start talking about doing it again I get very excited. There's always a bit of melancholy about it because of the amazing memories of the experience. It was a very intense period in all our lives and the thought that we are all going to come together again to do it - and possibly in Vancouver where it all started - is very exciting. A lot has happened in the past few years but we are excited by each other's company and I think it will be loads of fun actually."

Anderson, 37, said Carter had been working hard to make the follow-up feature film happen. "I think there were a lot of issues that have stopped it in the past but now it seems clear and they've got the contract details worked out and I guess Chris has had time to write it and all those things equal something positive," she said.

But the chances of a 10th series of the television show are precisely zero, she said. "It's just never going to happen, it's just not on the cards at all. I don't think we have the energy for it either of us."

So the X-Philes, and indeed a potential younger audience of converts to the adventures of Mulder and Scully, will have to settle for another movie. In the years since they have been away there has been more than enough threat of global terror, government skullduggery, conspiracy theories and fears of evil- minded scientists and dark forces at play to provide an appetite for their return.

"That's true and there's an opening for that," acknowledges Anderson before squashing any notion that the film will attempt to focus on such topical issues. "Except that I understand that the script is nothing to do with what some of the themes have been about in the past.

"It's going to be a very scary film about two characters who happen to be called Mulder and Scully. I don't think they are going to draw on any of the mythology or the conspiracy stuff, as far as I know. My understanding is that it's scary like a monster film."

Read more at The Independent
So it looks like a 2009 release for X-2.

Check out this short video clip, not too much info on X-2 but you'll get your Gillian fix.

I have to disagree with that. All the stuff I've seen DD do post xfiles has been really good. Hes a great actor and has shown some range in the stuff he has done.

I think his premise was DD hasn't made any big mainstream blockbuster hits. I think he struck out early with a couple movies and decided to do more independent film work. He's got a good eye for cinema.

I am TOTALLY on board with an X-Files sequel. Every now and then, I pop in a DVD and remember how much I liked this show.

that all depends what they did with their money. Later in the series, with how long it ran, they had to be making some decent per episode money.

Twentieth Century Fox today announced a July 25, 2008 release for a new motion picture based on the phenomenally-popular, award-winning series "The X-Files." Long-anticipated but until now unconfirmed, the film reunites series stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson under the direction of series creator Chris Carter, who co-wrote the screenplay with Frank Spotnitz.

I don't see why? I think I watched a total of about 5 episodes of the x files before the first movie came out. I loved the movie but never really felt it necessary to watch any of the episodes after the movie. I did however and that brought the total watched shows up to about 15.

Personal interest, I love the show. I have seasons 1-7, haven't watched 6 and 7 yet, then gotta get 8... and maybe Netflix 9.

Thats awesome news that it is coming to theaters so soon. I figured it would be 2009 or 2010 before we saw it.

if you have up to season 7, just stop there. I forget where Season 7 leaves off, but just quit there. It does not matter what cliffhanger they throw at you, it will just fall flat. The shows greatness was forever tarnished for me and my friends because we forced ourselves to trudge through the last 2 seasons. I promise you'll be disappointed if you watch much past season 7.

Season 7 however was very good with some excellent episodes including The Goldberg Variation, The Amazing Maleeni, First Person Shooter, X-Cops, Hollywood AD, Fight Club, and one of my personal favorites of the series Je Souhaite (the genie episode). Season 7 also includes "All Things" which was written and directed by Gillian Anderson and has one of the most breathtaking and amazing camera moves I have ever seen on film.

Oh, and am I the only one on the planet that likes Marita Covarrubias?

I don't agree, I liked Season 8... it even ends well, it could be the end of the show really, it's a better end to the show. Season 8 rocked.

Season 9 was fucking horrible.

Great news about the flick BTW...
