Terminator 4 - Terminator rights aquired by Halcyon

Quote:
Halcyon Company Acquires Terminator Franchise
Source: The Halcyon Company
May 10, 2007

The Halcyon Company announced today the acquisition of all the "Terminator" franchise rights. These rights include the right to produce any future "Terminator" films, as well as all future merchandising and licensing rights, certain future revenues derived from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, as well as certain rights in the television project "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" and the sole right to produce all future "Terminator" projects in any new or existing media.

The Halcyon Company is a recently formed, privately financed, film development, production and financing company, headed by co-CEOs Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek. "The 'Terminator' franchise represents by far the most popular and successful franchise not owned by a major studio," said Mr. Kubicek. "While we have several other projects in the works, we see this global franchise as a cornerstone of Halcyon's future business plans."

Terminator 4 will be based on a script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris and is envisioned to be the first film in a new "Terminator" trilogy. Halcyon plans to immediately begin pre-production on the new film. While as yet no distribution agreement has been set, Halcyon anticipates that "T4" will be ready for release in the first half of 2009, if not earlier.

Moritz Borman, the Executive Producer of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines as well as the then-CEO of Intermedia Films (the co-production financial partner for "T3"), is slated to produce the new Terminator 4 film as well as being an integral member of the branding and licensing team. Kubicek and Anderson will co-produce.

Moritz Borman stated, "With 'T3,' we included many incidental details and plot points that, along with the main narrative, set the stage for an entirely new set of inter-related stories covering the future adventures of John Connor and the Terminators. This new 'Terminator' trilogy will build upon the already huge worldwide Terminator fan base, which was both revitalized and expanded with the global success of 'T3.'"

Anderson said, "We also plan to maximize the potential of the 'Terminator' franchise by entering into strategic relationships with world class merchandising and licensing partners. By quickly pursuing and finalizing these new opportunities, we are confident that all of these ventures can be completed in time to fully maximize their value by coinciding with the first of the new 'Terminator's' release."

Anderson continued, "In addition to Moritz Borman, Peter D. Graves, who will be an Executive Producer on the film, was an integral part of the acquisition team. He will also continue to provide executive consulting services to The Halcyon Company as well as spearhead all aspects of the 'Terminator' marketing program. Alan Schwartz, Randy Paul and Vincent Chieffo of Greenberg Traurig represented Halcyon in the transaction and were critical to its successful completion. Alan Schwartz and the Greenberg Traurig firm will continue to provide ongoing legal counsel to The Halcyon Company."

The most recent film of the multi-billion dollar "Terminator" franchise, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, was released domestically by Warner Bros. Pictures and internationally (excluding Japan and Korea) by Sony Pictures. This film generated over $450 million in worldwide box office, breaking numerous box office records around the world. The film went on to even greater success in its ancillary markets worldwide.

The Halcyon Company is a recently established, privately funded, independent film development, production and financing company founded by Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson. Anderson and Kubicek plan to produce a portion of Halcyon's future output with the balance of the company's pipeline, expected to be produced in conjunction with other established producers and production entities in the industry.

Kubicek and Anderson both come from financial and creative backgrounds. Prior to co-founding Halcyon, Anderson was the founder and creative director of In the Mix, a boutique marketing and advertising agency, which was sold in 2000. Kubicek began his career in finance as a member of The American Stock Exchange and produced The Halcyon Company's first feature film Cook-Off!, which recently won an HBO Aspen Comedy Festival award.

Moritz Borman has produced more than twenty films, most recently including Oliver Stone's World Trade Center and Alexander. Until 2005 he was Chairman and CEO of Intermedia Films, which he took public in 2000.

Peter D. Graves is one of the top industry marketing consultants. Formerly President of Marketing for PolyGram Films, Graves has been directly responsible for, or consulted on, the marketing and release of over 200 titles including "Terminator 3"; The Perfect Storm; Braveheart; Fargo; The Score; Elizabeth; The Game; Dead Man Walking; The Usual Suspects; and Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Why, oh, why? I have no desire to have another Terminator movie. The storyline of the first 3 are so strong with the leader of the rebellion, where are they going to go. If they go that route they will have to replace the actor - as they have before - and I just dont want to see that character again. The other option is to base it on a different time period, but when?

You know I don't know. There could be a story to be told directly following aftermath of T3 or set in the future showing the war between the humans and machines.

The only thing that interests me here is the possibility of seeing John Connor starting up and running his resistance against the Machines. There have been three movies (of varying degress of cool) with Terminators going back in time to kill-and-or-protect various members of the Connor clan. There's only so much variety you can have with that setup, and I think I'm simply done with that aspect of the Terminator universe.

So if it's gonna be two hours of man vs machine, apocalypse-style, then bring it on (or anything NEW, really). But if it's more same-ol', same-ol'... forget it.

I'm game for this also. The brief flash forwards to that in the 1st 3 films have been extremely cool. The potential for a kick ass sci fi/action film is definitely there. Maybe we could see the origin of the "human like" Terminators and their initial infiltration?

Although cool, wouldn't any movie depicting a man v machine environment indicate that everything that happened in the first three movies was a total failure? If they....

nm, I just remembered how the third movie ended.

I would be pumped if they did show the future war vs the machines. It makes the most sense. With the conclusion of the third movie I don't see any other avenues with which they could go.

The first three movies are a great trilogy... the end connects to the beginning. I still take T3 to task for being so different in tone and purpose, but it all works as a trilogy anyway.

A new movie could be cool as long as it doesn't break that trilogy. A spin-off during the actual war, as others have said, would be cool.

T3 shouldn't have happened, it completely invalidates everything the first two movies stood for, in that fate is what we make, then T3 comes in for a big money grab and dashes that all and says that fate is predetermined.

Whatever, I'd hardly consider T3 a good trilogy, more like 2 awesome movies and a lame 3rd movie.

Oh well, at least we're all in agreement that finally seeing a movie set in the future war part of the story would be cool. Just have the climax sending Reece back to the past and then the story makes a full loop.

I agree with that and have pointed it out before, but it doesn't ruin an otherwise good action movie for me, and you have to admit the ending was ballsy and impressive.

Too bad the last five minutes had about 100 minutes of dreck before it.

Again when you establish a set of rules, a universe to be exact, and then dash those rules in the 3rd movie not only does it invalidate the universe but also all the pathos and drama of the first two.

The whole emotional crux of the first two was this idea that one person can make a difference and that they can alter the future, whereas in T3: Rise of the Money Grab, they basically shit on that concept.

Yeah, but if Judgment Day is prevented, then the machines don't take over. time travel isn't invented, Kyle Reese doesn't go back and impregnate Sarah Connor, ect., until the universe implodes in a tangle of unresolved time travel paradoxes (see Deja Vu). Personally, I fucking loved how T3 ended, and the rest of the movie was hella-entertaining.

"Talk to the hand"? Yeah that shit was a disgrace to the originals. Whatever.

I'm glad Cameron distanced himself from this series, even though it was his cinematic baby.

Like the ULTRA-CLICHED scene of Arnie appearing in his trademark leather outfit scored to (wait for it...) "Bad To The Bone" in T2 was brilliant?

Well, yeah. At least that makes sense for the character of the Terminator.

The first 2 films are brilliant...the third one was a joke...these can go nowhere but downhill...as far as I'm concerned, the story ended with T2...

It depends. You assume that time travel won't be invented in the future. Also, what is changed in the present only affects the future, and not the past. Any changes that were made in the past already happened, even if the future changes. The future-to-be doesn't exist anymore, but the actions of those future-to-be characters still had an impact on the past and present. I don't see how there was a paradox in this instance, though I haven't seen Deja Vu.

Marcus Schenkenberg in Terminator 4?
Source: Pauluz
May 29, 2007

Scooper 'Pauluz' alerted us that model/actor Marcus Schenkenberg revealed new details about Terminator 4 on Dutch talk show "Jensen!":

Just wanted to inform you about something interesting. The male model Marcus Schenkenberg was on a Dutch tv show and mentioned he went to Cannes last week and booked four new movie roles. One thing that stood out was Terminator 4 and he also mentioned that Schwarzenegger would have a 30-sec cameo. A clip of the interview that will be online next week.
I wonder if he will also try and assassinate the micronysia dude.

I thought I also heard there was a terminator TV show in the works and that Summer Glau was somehow attached.

This is my favorite use of the exclamation point in the name of a TV show name since Cleghorne!.

Also, the notion of an overly cheap version of The Terminator made for TV is fantastic, and should have been on the Sci-Fi channel instead, so they could have really goofy looking "I made this at home on my Mac" CGI every 30 seconds.

With McG directing this new film, make sure to look for lots of uses of music that was radio popular in 2003, and whenever the robots fight, songs with robots in the title, used unironically. I'm thinking he'll get good use out of Flight of the Conchords recent "hit."

So you're suggesting going to the tired well once again, even after a hideously uninventive sequel, and getting a director who only knows how to do dumb and empty (at odds with how well constructed the first Terminator is) is somehow going to improve everything, and you're looking forward to it?

So, moving on...I really do think this could be made into a hell of a scifi series and not be too associated with the original trilogy...like no Govenator. Where is Joss Whedon when you need him.

I think since they want the next story to take place in the middle of the war with the machines, rather than directly after T3, casting an older actor like Christian Bale seems to make more sense.

No disrespect to Nick Stahl, who is a great actor, but he still looks really young, and if they want a story with John Connor in his mid-to-late 30s, Christian Bale is an ideal choice.

I like Christian Bale in everything he's in, so I think it's a good choice. Of course, I thought he could be great as the next James Bond also.

Too bad the weak link here is the inclusion of McG. Jesus christ that's a bad call.
