Did I miss the Oscars??

Was this televised?? I just today realized they have come and gone. I had no idea who was nominated for what or hell if I had even seen a nominated film.

I know the writers strike affected the gathering but damn. Its usually an over blown event but I love to complain during the telecasts.

Sorry if this is a repeat or in the wrong place.

Yeah, it was last weekend. It always seems to be the last weekend of February.

The show apparently had some of the lowest ratings for an Oscar telecast in a long time. And that makes me smile.

Not some of....

The worst rated telecast in its 80 year history. Theres just too many damn award shows as it is. Do we really need Best Video Games and Scariest Movie Award Shows on Spike TV? This is just getting out of hand.

Ratings are now probably more accurate than ever before, using electronic boxes that keep track of Nielson viewers' habits, instead of writing down what they watch in booklets. I always questioned how accurate some of those viewer ratings were in the past.

Why does that make you smile? It was actually a pretty good show this year. John Stewart did much better than last year, IMHO.

Well, I’ve been anti-Oscar for some time now. Besides thinking many of the nominations are ridiculous, the show seems more like a marketing tool rather than a genuine celebration of film. I’ve enjoyed some of the hosts (and you know I love Stewart), but the show holds no interest for me anymore. Everything from the awful, gossip-driven pre-shows, the competitive crying by the actors and the hurried-off-stage technical people, all just make me a bit nauseous.

Basically, I think these award shows cheapen cinema.

Depends on your definition of "missed"- my opinion, NO.

I hadnt seen a single film nominated for any of the main categories, and that is the case every year so IDGAF !!1

And, those video game and horror awards shows are fun for the fans, and cover the mainstream stuff most are interested in. Pays tribute to those who support them and its just a fun (and funny) time for all. I have watched the Scream Awards 2 years in a row, and it isnt just horror films- covers comics, video game movies, and superheroes, as well as a bunch of other fun stuff.

I guess over the next month or so i'll rent the Oscar flicks and see if they were worth it. Watched American Gangster last night and thought it was good, but not amazing.

The oscars arent worth watching anymore. Now the highlights online (Busey is the best), are priceless.

I thought it was awesome how John Stewart gave that lady who won for best song a chance to give her "thank you"s after the band leader played them off the stage. That is one thing that really ticks me off about the Oscars: these people work their asses off and when they finally get their chance to shine, some music director gets to decide that "your time is up" and you don't get to make your speech. It's stupid and it's petty. Give everybody who wins a chance to talk. You don't need to give everybody 15 minutes or whatever, but at least give everybody who wins a chance. Nobody (except maybe the network) gives a shit if the Oscars go 30 minutes over.

They even hurried Brad fucking Bird. If you made The Incredibles, you should have all the time you need.

I didn't even watch it this year. I usually have a monstrous party, but for several reasons, and because I had to work that night, there was no Oscar party here this year. I did however record it and have been watching it in chunks over the last 3 nights.

If you don't speak English, you won an Oscar this year. I had kept myself out of the loop as to what won Best Picture up until a couple days ago when I caught a blurb on TV about the upcoming DVD release. I must say that it is no great surprise since the Academy loves the Cohens.

Quite a few people that usually attend the Oscar festivities around here have told me that they watched it and found it extra boring this year, so I don't think anyone really missed out on much.

There Will Be Blood should have won more awards over Country For Old Men . Also, Ellen Page should have won best actress for Juno instead of some french chick in some french movie that no one has seen or heard of. . Other than that, DDL pulled off the best actor oscar--if he hadn't I would never have watched the oscars again....EVER! As it was I simply fast forwarded most of it anyways.

So I'll be... people actually watch the Oscars? I thought it was just another ceremony for people who have a narcissistic need to have awards for themselves about every few months despite their amazingly high salaries.

Cotillard was very deserving actually, her performance was top notch. Just because her movie wasn't as popular as Juno doesn't make her any less deserving. An argument could be made that she's more deserving, since her performance was good enough that she managed to be noticed despite being in a less successful (in North America) movie.

Sorry, but as much as I like Page, her performance in the overrated Juno shadows in comparison to Cotillard’s transformative, encompassing performance in La Vie en Rose. Notions of hyperbole be damned, it’s one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen.

Fair enough T-dot but Ellen Page was still pretty amazing.
