Journey To The Center Of The Earth - 3D

Hmmmm, what can I say. A throwback to my youngster days. The theater was packed with adults and kids. A few to many toddlers though.

I'm not going to say I loved it, but I was entertained. Brendan Fraser was fun as usual. Josh Hutcherson & Anita Briem round out a fun believable cast. The 3D was excellent. The movie has a Disney-ish feel to it. Non-stop action once they make the decent. Goofy, leave your brain at the door kinda fun. It might not be nearly as fun without the 3D, but I still recommend it.

Before they started the movie, they provided a trailer for the first 3D animated film Fly Me To The Moon
The 3D looked pretty amazing. You would hear oohs and awws from the audience. I was impressed. The story unfortunately looks very kiddish.

What's different about that film compared to, say, Chicken Little or Meet The Robinsons?

Pirate, I believe it is the first animated film to be shot in 3D 100% unlike many other movies where they have shown specific scenes in 3D in IMAX theaters (Superman, Batman, Beowulf, etc).

It won't be available in theaters that can't show a 3D image I believe, which is fine by me since it doesn't look interesting anyway.

Beowulf had a hell of a lot of 3D in it to not call it a 3D movie....

Yeah, I'm not sure what "shot for 3D" means. I was under the impression that films like Beowulf and Chicken Little were created with 3D in mind.

Perhaps I'm confusing the process?

3D like a movie where you have to put the glasses on. Beowulf watched in theaters, even in IMAX didn't require you to put on 3D glasses the whole time. I don't understand where the confusion is. This is going to be the first animated movie where you put on 3D glasses to watch the film for the entire duration of the film, not just specific segments.

Don't confuse CGI with 3D.

I didn't think I was. I kept my glasses on for the entirety of Beowulf. It was all in 3D from what I remember.

It sounds more like this will be the first 3D film not to offer a 2D experience.

EDIT: According to IMDB, Beowulf was created using a Digital 3D source format and printed for 3D-Cinema. Usually it mentions if it was only specific sections.

When I saw Beowulf it wasn't completely in 3D. Only key action sequences. The rest of the time you took the glasses off.

But I think the movie was shot for traditional theater distribution with key scenes modified for 3D viewing whereas this one will be 100% 3D from the beginning. Maybe the difference is the intent to not distribute to traditional theaters as you said.

Well, they did something to Beowulf, because I remember seeing the 3D effects of foreground elements in almost every scene. And it never flashed for the audience to take the glasses off during the film.

I've expunged most of Chicken Little, so I can't say what happened for that film.

Beowulf was most definitely in 3D for 100% of the running time. I got the impression that, depending on the theater, you saw it with either no 3D or all 3D. I never heard about any odd experiences like cherno's with partial 3D. Meet the Robinsons was also released to select theaters with 3D applied to the entire film.

The only reason I can think of Fly Me to the Moon getting the distinction is because, like Pirate said, this will be the first time a film is not released to theaters that don't offer the 3D effect. Or, as many animation fans like myself believe, motion capture (Beowulf) is not true animation. Or it could just be a marketing gimmick. Anyway, I'm confused too.

Every time I took off the 3D glasses for Beowulf in IMAX 3D, there was (at least) a bit of fuzziness - that movie was meant to be in 3D, with glasses on, the whole film that my wife and I saw.

Hmm, maybe I am remembering wrong then. In either case this is a different discussion than what the thread was intended m'thinks.

Beowulf was most definitely 100% 3D. I remember taking the 3D glasses off during a 'non-action' sequence and seeing a blurry picture. Same with Meet the Robinsons.

That said, i might make the trip to see this. Im gonna be pretty busy over the next week.

Ok to clarify things. Fly Me to the Moon is the first movie designed for 3D exhibition only and not for regular theaters without Digital Projection. So this wont be offered for 35mm film theaters like myself (yes!!!) There have been plenty of animated movies already offered in complete 3D. Beowulf, Meet the Robinsons, Nightmare Before Christmas and The Polar Express to name a few. My theater has advertised the Fly Me to the Moon trailer but they do this for any film really to get the word out
