So for those who are more interested in the high-end ($1K+)...

The Arcam DVD players are region-free via a visit to the service menu (go to Setup and enter 4792 to get into the service menu). You get options for regions: None, 1-6, and Auto.

Outside of that these players are absolutely stunning. I have a DV88+ mated to a Transparent Premium component cable and a Sammy DLP. Even badly done DVDs look great, and well done DVDs approach HD quality. Color, detail, and depth are outstanding, and the picture has a very smooth and film-like quality. The only player I've seen that looks better is the Krell (but at much greater cost).

I don't have a 16:9 TV, but I do have a Sony Wega. If I watch a PAL disc on this player on my Wega in 16:9 mode, will that work?

Love my Cyberhome, although it doesn't get that much use. The one thing I've noticed with it the colors are very bright no matter what I do. Reds are the worst, it's not to bad but it can get annoying sometimes. Anyone else have that problem? I tried changing the seetings on my T.V but it was still very bright

that was one of the problems that a lot of people reported with the Cyberhome - reds just seem to run a little hot. I managed to get rid of by calibrating with Avia... that seemed to do the trick.

You can do it using an Aiwa Remote or a Configurable remote with sleep and clock buttons, setting it to control an Aiwa receiver.
The Trick is:
Turn the equipment (M301) On.
Open the Disk Tray.
Press Sleep in the Aiwa remote, after that you will see the cold start screen in the TV.
Press Clock three times Very Quickly between pressing and pressing, After this you will see an Adjusting Message in the M301 LCD Screen.
Put the Disk you wanna watch and close the disk tray, no matter what region it is, it will Play.
The Hack will work as long as the equipment is kept on, after you Turn the M301 off, it will go back to its initial state (it will ask for the language every time you do a Cold Start).

i just got that info from another website...it's saying you CAN use a universal remote that is capable of controlling AIWA equipment - but the remote MUST include a clock and sleep button (so, you can't use "el cheapo" uni remotes - you'll need something that can be very specific). That's all the help I can give you...

worst case, go to best buy and buy the Cyberhome 300S dvd player for $35 (yes, thirty-five), it plays EVERYTHING from any region and even has a PAL to NTSC converter in it...

The Philips 727 or 726 are both good work horses. I have them both and they are fine, indeed. They seem to be gone except for the refurbished ones at the main Philips website. I bought my 726 refurbished and it was as good as new! Thumbs up!

Update on the COBY 215. I bought the six DVD 'Cold Feet' boxset (Helen Baxendale from sendit.com but it wouldn't play it. A quick search located a remote-based hack which opened up a menu that allowed converting the player to any region, from 0 to 9. I switched it to 2 and it worked beautifully. The player has better features than my R1 Sony, such as 3X zoom, slow-motion down to 16X slower etc. Now I just have to get some R2 porn :p !

Okay, so I have this Region 2 DVD I'm dying to play on my old decrepit Toshiba SD-3006 and I finally found a crack online and I have NO idea how to do it because it's in friggin Spanish. Can anyone translate or babywalk me through this? Many, many thanks...

Well I have a Daewoo, it was $50 and another $30 for shipping, but I got it as a gift, so I cannot say I overpaid. It isn't anything out of this world but it gets the job done pretty damn well, and plays almost anything you can throw at it (bar dvd-a, sacd, and hdcd), and it has progressive scan. In another year or two I'll replace it, but for now I'm more or less happy with mine.

I don't know what your definition of cheap is, but the one player that's generating a bit of discussion is the OPPO OPDV971H for ~$199. It utilizes the same Faroudja DCDi deinterlacer that powers the $1499 Denon DVD-3910 player, offers upconversion to 480p, 576p (PAL), 720p, and 1080i, and is the second highest scoring player (94/100) rated by Secrets Of Home Theater And High Fidelity (link).

Do only hi-def tvs have a DVI connection? Is there anyway to connect DVI to any TV through a converter or something?

To clarify, I am looking for a DVD player with the ability to play every region, to play PAL discs without the "stretching" effect and I was hoping to pay as little as possible. The DVD player I use now plays multiregions but stretches PAL discs. Any suggestions?

I just picked up a Cyberhome 300 from Target for under $50. This was a replacement secondary player for my old Cyberhome 500. This model doesn't stretch PAL discs.

thanks sidcup. That sounds more like what I am looking for on my college budgie. Is there anything special I need to do when I play PAL discs or will it automatically figure it out?

I think this is the way to unlock the player --

Turn On the player and make sure there is no disc in
Close the tray
Press Menu, 1 and 9
A menu will appear and press Enter, this will highlight the Region setting
Press the number of the region required i.e. 0, 1, 2 etc.
Press Enter again
Press Open/Close tray

Sorry, wasn't clear (but that was helpful!). Do I have to change any video settings or anything to play PAL discs normally or will it automatically figure out how to display it correctly?

Once the region is set it does everything else automatically.

Here's the thing... you pay for what you get. I've read those reviews as well but my previous Cyberhome which was famous for crapping out quickly lasted almost 3 years which for a sub-$50 player isn't too bad.

I picked this up yesterday and just tried it out. It seems as though on region 2 discs it gets choppy as though frames are taken out. Have you noticed this?

That's the PAL-NTSC conversion. Unless you have a multi-region TV then there is now way around it.

So it is the TV and not the player? Or if I got a better player would it look better. My old DVD player played region 2 discs, but since they were distorted, I imagine this is why there was no choppiness, because there was no actual conversion going on?

Is there anything I can get to solve this problem? Adaptor or something? Thanks.

A better, more expensive player would smooth it out but it would still be there. It's something to do with PAL using more frames per second than NTSC so it has to drop some. Progressive scan I think can smooth it out as well. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

Frame dropping is common to every PAL->NTSC converting player I've ever used. I'm not sure why is happens because there are actually less fields/frames per second in PAL than NTSC, so if anything frames should get repeated. Perhaps someone more techie than me can explain what's going on.

I have two excellent players to recommend: The Toshiba 4980 (aka the Toshiba SD-K850 at Costco), and the Pioneer DV-588A-S. Both have killer PAL->NTSC conversion, and both support DivX (mp4) files. The Toshiba has a simple one-time remote hack to make it region free. The Pioneer must be flashed with hacked firmwares found around the net. The Toshiba upconverts to hi-def (720p or 1080i) over HDMI. The Pioneer supports SACD and DVD-A. Choose which model fits your needs best. Both cost close to $100.

I've purchased the Toshiba SD-K850 from Costco mentioned in this thread and have found it to be the most lackluster player I've ever owned. I've experience chronic artifacting (primarily very prevalent combing issues), extremely groggy navigation response, absurd layer change times (@5 seconds) and extreme sensitivity to dust and minor scratches. It is markedly inferior in all respects to my previous DVD player which is, ironically, also a Toshiba player built into a half-decade old all-in-one TV.

Extensive research has pointed me to the Oppo OPDV971H DVD player. It has a DVI output but comes with a DVI-HDMI cable. Don't let the odd brand name turn you off, it appears to be a serious player (yet has a pretty decent price). I cannot report any first-hand experience with this player yet but I'll post again when I pick one up.

I recently swap out my Samsung HD850 due to its inability to play DVD+R DL disk for Oppo OPDV971H. And I'm so glad that I did. Not only it has all the features as the samsung (720p/1080i scaler), it offers so much more. With little research, you can turn this into a region free DVD player as well as divx player.

My only complain is its flimsy DVD holder. It looks like it could break any time. But that's minor complain. I'm sure you'll be happy with the purchase.

I too am extremley happy with the Oppo. It's got a better picture than any player I've used, it's region free(simple remote hack, enter 9210 on the main set up menu to enter a secret menu, and enter 0, making it region 0, I'm pretty sure thats the code anyway), and yes it plays DL DVD+Rs flawlessly! It converts PAL to NTSC, though I can't personally comment on this, as my display handles both so I need no conversion, but others say it's a perfect conversion.

I know this is an old thread, but it can't hurt to ask... I'd like to get my parents a multiregion player for Christmas. It doesn't need to be top-end -- they have a fairly simple TV setup -- but what I do need is the following:

- multiregion out of the box
- simple process for resetting it if a DVD locks the player into one region or another

Any recommendations?

Thanks!
