Oldboy 2 disc UK Tartan

Forget the Ultimate Edition or Final Edition or Special Editions from Korea....

This UK disc looks much more definitive (and english subs on the extras to boot)

-2.35 Anamorphic Wide Screen PAL
-Korean DTS-ES 6.1 and Korean Dolby EX 6.1
--(Korean SE has DTS 5.1, UE and FE have DD 5.1 only....)

Extras :
-Exclusive Interview With Mark Salisbury (not on Korean discs)
-Director Commentary (from the UE)
-Cinematographer Commentary (from the UE/FE)
-Cast Commentary (from the UE/FE)
-Film Critic Kim Yong Jin Commentary (from the UE)
-Original Theatrical Trailer
-UK Theatrical Trailer (not on the Korean discs)
-Making Of Documentary Part 1 (appr 50min) (from the SE)
-Making Of Documentary Part 2 (appr 50min) (from the UE/FE)
-9 Deleted Scenes With Optional Commentary (from the UE/FE)
-Cannes Film Festival Gala Premiere Footage (from the FE)
-Memory Of Old Boy Short Film (from the UE)

great extras all subbed in English,
4 commentaries subtitled too,
this seems to be an incredible and affordable option for english speakers.

Its a good thing I waited.....

£19.99 is the SRP, 2/21/05 the release date.

Yeah, I think that I'll buy this version. Tartan can't do any worse than the current mucked up Korean editions.
If only Tartan could offer nicer packaging design... then this would be a slam dunk.

Tartan holds the rights on the US DVD release, so you might want to wait and see if they're going to simply port the UK version over to the US.

I keep hearing generally mixed to sub-par reviews of Tartan discs, so I don't know how their venture into US disc releases (They're releasing Phone, something else, Oldboy and A Tale of Two Sisters in the US both theatrically and on DVD.) will be, especially since they're mainly a (German?) company.

The BBFC will cut this movie. Animal cruelty, they say, although the animal in question is already dead.

Actually it's a fully live octopus, which is a delicacy in the country and such.

It's squirming and everything as he downs it.

I thought they decided not to cut it due to cultural context.

Recently their discs have been top notch.
The early releases had a few problems and so forth,
and they are by no means perfect.

Not true. I got the Tartan release of Tale of Two Sisters, and the picture is darker (too dark) than normal, and also has a slight tinge/hue of red/magenta. I am most unhappy with my purchase, but it's the only version that has English subs on the extras.

Still, Tartan is 10x better than the U.S.'s Media Blasters. (So far, Media Blasters DVDs have really crap quality.)

Yes...I hope Tartan has improved, because I have their release of Almodovar's "Matador", and the less said about that, the better!

I was worried that this version would be cut, but i just checked http://www.bbfc.co.uk/ (search for Oldboy) and it passed as "18" with NO cuts!

"This work was passed with no cuts made."

Looks like this is the one then.

I would probably wait for the Tartan US release.... I have their release of "Anatomy of Hell" and the picture quality is excellent, so I have high hopes for their release of "Oldboy". I guess they are using a better DVD production company than their UK counterpart. For now, I'd reccomend getting Edko's HK release... apparently very good picture quality for VERY cheap (no extras tho).

How is this release? If I live in the States should I just wait for the US release? or is this worth picking up?

Asking the same question as above. Does anyone know if this is the best version to get?

I ordered the Edko edition. Hope I get it soon, and I hope it's the best version as far as movie/audio/sub-titles, could care less about extras. It does come w/ a trailer too, so sweet!

Resurecting the old thread.

I just caught this last night, loved it, and was about to pick up the R1 edition. However, can I play the UK R0 PAL (I would like the extras)? I know I can play R0, but what can I expect with the PAL (sorry, I haven't ventured out of R1 releases).

What kind of display do you have? Most projectors can handle PAL, but most TVs cannot (maybe some of the newer LCDs, DLPs, etc. can).

Also, your DVD player needs to be able to switch back and forth between PAL and NTSC. Check you setup menu to see if you have that option.

Best way to check really, is to play a PAL disc and see if it goes.
If you insert it and the picture starts to flicker, that means it's not converting the PAL signal to NTSC. My old Sony wouldn't play PAL at all, and a 'different region disc' warning came up.

I'd say go ahead and buy it. It's dirt cheap on amazon uk or cd-wow.
And if you can't play it, you can always see it on your PC.

by the way, TARTAN UK will be issueing a "Vengeance Trilogy" boxset with Chan Wook Park's 3 films in October. They said to have new extras, but I'm gonna wait for a review of it first. Plus it's expensive.....
