Banned in Singapore, is your media library banned?

http://bannedinsingapore.com ~ Is your media library banned?

Hi all,

I work at amazon.com which gets returns for many reasons. One being the Media Development Authority of Singapore has opened the box and found a DVD it doesn't want in the country. Amazon has a list of 150 DVD's known to be returned from conservative countries. Then there is another list of approximately the same size of additional titles known to be refused from Singapore. That list has not been updated in many years. However I have the fun job of processing recent returns that need extra research and a good percentage are from Singapore. Since it is a mild annoyance for me and probably a big annoyance for people in Singapore I’ve constructed a site that will continually grow as new titles are returned.

http://bannedinsingapore.com (currently over 300 titles)

The sites list http://bannedinsingapore.com/list.htm is the culmination of the internal amazon list, the imdb.com database, and the Media Development Authority of Singapore database. The later has at least a thousand banned titles which is making the updating process never ending.

I'm also redesigning the site so it will be a bit easier on the eyes.

Just so you know this is an amazon associates site which means if any of the titles are purchased through my site you will help pay for maintaining this resource.

Have Fun,
Saculus aka Rich Fuester

gah, that's amazing.

Great list of movies though, in fact it's almost a list of DVDs I own.

I moved!!!

I was born in Singapore. And...guess what? I moved. The country literally and figuratively sucks all creativity out of anybody, let alone banning anything and everything possible. All the movies shown in Singapore and available on home video are censored to the extreme. I can still remember going to the movies and having that paranoid dread that something's gonna be cut, each and every time. You can give the censorship board credit for one thing though....they have made an art out of seemlessly cutting stuff out of anything. Yes! you can't tell that stuff was cut out! :-(

I wonder why Save the Last Dance is on there. Although I haven't actually seen it myself, it looks harmless. Is it the interracial angle?

Legally Blonde & Save the Last Dance were on the amazon internal list for banned movies from conservative countries/Singapore. Both seem harmless to me but I have not seen either movie so I can only guess at the reasoning. As for the interacial basis of STLD Singapore promotes itself as a melting pot of culture so I don't beleive thats why. But if I remember the TV spots maybe it has something to do with teen pregnancy or violence. There are links on my site to the Media Development Authority of Singapore's website. They explain why there must be censorship.

I've updated most of the titles found in the Singapore Banned Database
1200+ movies
