Disposable income and DVD

I recently noticed an odd quirk with myself.

Being a recently graduated (I wonder how long I can say that) starving ex-student living in Santa Cruz CA (recently classed the most expensive place to live in the country...) I have _Very_ limited disposable income. Now of course I spend the lions share of this on DVDs. So much so I guage all my other potential purchases in DVDs. For example, I've been thinking of buying a MP3 CD player for my stereo but at like $120 I keep thinking but thats like 4-5 DVDs! Likewise I recently found a cookbook that I'd really like, but at 35 bucks I could get a DVD and a half...

I don't know why I decided to share this... I guess I was wondering if anyone else thinks this way...

<------ what is the deal with this smilie anyway??

Yep. Know what you mean glossybear. Hell, I've even passed up food to buy dvds. I even passed up my prized smokes to buy dvds. Now passing up the bills to buy dvds? I have done that before, too. But I didn't make a habit of it.

Yeah a large amount of my disposable income goes towards DVDs as well - I think that would go for almost everyone on the forum. I'll reduce my purchases if I feel like traveling though, 2-3 months worth of DVDs works out to about 1 week in Europe.
I think is for rating movies. Such as:

••• I've always thought that's what disposable income was for .... your hobbies

I have lots... (hobbies, that is!!)... dvds, cds, books, concerts/shows, etc.

I guess all of my hobbies are entertainment related.

I'm not a sports enthusiast, other than just watching football on TV,... so that's free.

I don't have any addictive vices (ie: smoking, drinking, drugs) to waste my money on.

Just the way things work for me •••

I've been lucky. Before the DVDs came out, when I first started working right out of College, I would buy lunch everyday. I'd go thru spurts when I would bring food from home but never stuck with it.

Two jobs later, I really got tired of buying lunches because they are so bad where I work now so I started to bring good food from home and so the funds that's left from that goes towards my ANTI-DrugVDs!!! I've been consciously trying not to go out as much on the weeknights so I can save that money towards DVDs. I just go out once in a while on the weekdays but come weekends I AM OUT!!!

Speaking of disposable, can't wait til the TAX REFUNDS!!! though I have to save most of it towards my home, which I will buy very soon.

Disposable income?
I work to enable my hobbies.
I pay my bills, cause most hobbies need electricity, and you need a house for that.
I save for the future, so that I may pursue my hobbies in my Golden Years.
Disposable income?

Well, for not much more than that, you could get a new DVD player. Many of them play MP3's on CDs now. It doesn't have to be portable, does it?

I am a avid DVD buyer and Video Game buyer so my money is usually pretty tight! I love my movies and games though....and I couldn't live without buying at least one or the other every payday!

I had a LOT of disposable income last year when between both my wife and I we were making over 100k. Then she got laid off and it slowed down, now I'm getting laid off and it has almost all but stopped. I haven't bought a brand new DVD in awile. Picked up a few previously viewed and some bargain bin movies but that's it.

I hate it!

Actually, for the first time in my increasingly aging life, I have a new car. Chrysler PT Cruiser. I suspect I won't be buying as many DVDs, but I WILL be pimpin.' Fair trade.

Oh yeah, I compare every price and money ammount to that in DVDs and how many I would be able to get.
I've just fixed up my '99 Yukon (brush guards, md changer, brake pads, etc) and even though it makes me very happy I still think, there goes 120 or so potential DVDs... well what can you do.
Hey, next time you can't buy a DVD think of some bum guy, and not one that ended up like he did because of himself but one that just been driven to that point by circumstances and a couple of bitches (yes I mean women).
Best therapy for me is taking a drive to downtown LA every night, beautiful skyscrapers, and rows of bums everywhere, there are those on the left with tents, that's their beverly hills, and those on the right with carton boxes, that's west hollywood, and then those with just paper or a towel, that's their compton...
So, I'm gona pre-order Spy Game and Mulholland Dr. then @ himself.

Well, basically when I first got into DVD (early 2000) I went a little nuts and spent too much money for a long time. I got by, but wasn't exactly spending wisely. Perhaps from being a former laserdisc dude and seeing how much more you get with DVD for half the price...

Then I went through a period where it caught up with me, and I was caught with some unexpected life expenses and it really turned me around, or so I thought.

What I've done in the past few months is basically give up other stuff.. like cable internet, cable itself, satellite TV, even my beloved rented water cooler... to have some extra income for DVDs.

The bills ALWAYS come first. There's no screwing around there. I pay my rent & utilities, internet, etc, before even thinking about spending on DVDs. What suffers is my choice of food. Lately I've been eating a lot of ramen noodles, mac & cheese, $1 cans of ravioli.

I'm at the point where after bills, I have roughly $600 left, and I've been splitting that... half for food/living expenses and half for DVD This month I went a little nuts and ended up with 23 new titles, but was saved by an unexpected $75 check.

Now for something slightly off-topic:

I'll say this here for the first time.... back when I was having trouble, I asked for help and two very kind, very caring, very generous friends helped me out. Next month, so help me... mark my words.... these guys WILL BE paid back. I simply can't live with myself if I don't do that. And you guys know who you are

well i'm 15 years old. I am now working part-time at petsmart, usually on the weekends. and I have 138 dvds as of now, and I've been around dvds for 8 months. That's like 17.25 dvds a month! I didn't even have a job 'til 2 weeks ago! Although, CH is the main reason for so many!

Oh and the stars.
