What do you think of D-VHS?

I watched a demostration of D-VHS and I hate to admit it but I was completely blown away. I could not believe it was VHS. The Picture and the sound was awesome! What do you guys think?

I haven't had a chance to see it in action. I've heard very good things about the increase in picture quality. By the time I could take advantage of it at home (i.e. get an HDTV) the HD DVDs will probably be out. Even if I did have the appropriate tv now, I don't know if I would buy a player because it is pricey and there aren't too many available titles that I would want to upgrade to. Now, if they would just release Moulin Rouge on D-VHS and play the entire movie as an instore demo...

I haven't seen the demo yet, but I can tell you that I wouldn't buy it.

It's on TAPE. I mean, yes, magnetic tape has improved in quality (I assume) since the 80's, but it's still on tape. It's magnetically recorded and we live on a giant magnetic ball.

It's slowly deteriorating in quality from the second it's made.

It's the same reason why I didn't get into buying original VHS tapes (I usually just taped things off of cable), but am more than willing to buy original DVDs since they are more-or-less permanent.

I am, however, anxiously await HD-DVD.

If it was up to me, they wouldn't even be wasting their time on D-VHS.

Bring on HD-DVD, baby.

I have to agree with wahlers. HD-DVD also will not have to be rewound or fast forwarded. I can wait. I just hope one format is chosen soon.

I happened to enjoy my D-VHS demo of Fight Club quite a bit. Looked better than the DVD to me. Sounded almost as good, too.

I don't think no one is denying that D-VHS looks better than DVD. But when you start to think about rewinding, fastforwarding, tapes wearing out, no multiple soundtracks, etc. it makes me want to stick with current DVDs until HDs are released.

Here is some previous discussion about D-VHS/D-Theater:

http://www.dvdfile.com/interactive/f...highlight=DVHS
http://www.dvdfile.com/interactive/f...highlight=DVHS
http://www.dvdfile.com/interactive/f...highlight=DVHS

I really don't have any problem with the existence of D-VHS and have finally seen a demo of it.... I was very impressed with the video quality....

I'm a DVD guy so I won't invest any money into D-VHS/D-Theater. As for HD-DVD, I'm very cursious to see how that takes form. I've heard that HD-DVD won't "match" D-VHS' video capability (meaning it might not support anything greater than 720p), but that should still be a GREAT improvement over existing DVD....

There is HD-DVD discussion here.

Peace.....

Exactly. There's no denying that they probably look good now.

I'm thinking long-term.

I would like to be through buying the same movie multiple times.

And before people bring up double-dipping on DVD-- most of the time the movie's the same, it's just new supplements that people are usually feeling the need to buy.

I'm with you on that. However, don't be surprised to see "HD-DVD" releases of titles currently out on DVD. Hopefully, the HD-DVD players will be able to upconvert non-HD DVD titles to HD-DVD resolutions (or close to those resolutions) so current DVDs will "shine" on the new players.

We'll see what happens.....

Peace....

Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure I will have to rebuy some titles on HD-DVD... but not all of them... can 80's comedies like The Money Pit or Mr. Mom really be improved much beyond what they are?

I primarily meant that if somebody buys a movie on DVHS, they'll more than likely have to buy a new copy down the line on the exact same format just to compensate for wear-n-tear.

After much consideration, this is more of a Soapbox discussion --"Talk here about the entertainment industry issues, tech concerns, new formats, and the future of Theaters, Movies, TV and DVD."

So, moving. Thanks.

Do you have any links to this info? I think it would be pretty stupid to come out with a brand new format that's inferior picture-wise to an existing one. Of course, Joe Six-Pack will never notice.

I'm SOOO glad you asked this question as if "forced" me to go and update my 'info" regarding the possible resolutions supported by HD-DVD players.

At the time I got my info, there wasn't a HD-DVD standard laser or anything and the "rumor mill" was very active. That's why I said I "heard" that about the 720p possibly being the max resoution output from a HD-DVD player.

Well, I started looking into this _again_ and discovered that the HD-DVD players might be just as confusing as HD receivers are now with the whole HDMI (DVI + HDCP) issue.

There is a TON of speculative info floating around right now, and some of the GOOD news is it looks like there will be some DVD players hitting the streets soon (sounds like around Summer of this year, possibly) that will be capable of upconverting 480i and 480p DVDs to 1080i and output that signal via DVI. Here is a link to discussion about a Samsung player that will do this:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...ighlight=HDDVD

Part of that discussion relates to whether this upconversion will also apply to the component and S-Video outputs and it doesn't sound like it will.

I'm still tracking down specific HD-DVD info. I don't believe the Samsung unit above is a HD-DVD player, but a DVD player that does upconversion to 1080i.

I've also found this article:

http://www.eet.com/sys/news/OEG20021108S0048

which indicates the DVD Forum has chosen a "blue-laser" technology proposed by Toshiba and NEC as the "HD-DVD standard" technology. Still, this article doesn't post any specifics.

With regard to the DVD players that upconvert to 1080i, these units will be priced inline with current DVD players. I believe the Samsung will MSRP at $349.

Here is a link to info on a $200 player that will also do this upconversion:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...ighlight=HDDVD

Again, I don't think the above player and the Samsung are HD-DVD players, but DVD players that do upconversion.

I'll post more in the HD-DVD discussion thread when I find more info.....

Peace....

Thanks for the info, Tom! Now I'm...confused.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what develops. I plan on purchasing a widescreen TV by Christmas(and will probably need a new player) so I definately want the best for the least. Of course, upgrading from a lifetime 27", ANYTHING will be heaven.

I'm with you there....

I guess if you get a set with DVI then you'll be in a great positiion regardless of what ends up happening with all this...

Peace.....
