DVD quality control

Has anyone noticed that quality control in DVD manufacture has gone down a bit in recent months? I have bought several DVDs (most recently Roger Rabbit) that have scratches on them (sometimes very deep scratches that prevent the discs from playing properly). There is no evidence that they have come off of the hubs during transport. This has occured on discs bought online and retail. I first started noticing this in November '02 but to that time I had had no problems.

As this is dealing with the DVD industry in general, I think this is better served in Soapbox. Thanks.

Actually, this is a very good question because I tend NOT to inspect newly purchased (or even rented) DVDs before I play them. I simply open the package, pop in the disc, and sit in my favorite spot on the couch.

I guess if you have a DVD player that's more "sensitive" than others this would be more of a serious problem. For me, the issue of DVD "quality control" hasn't entered my mind since I tend not to have problems with many DVDs at all.

I wonder if my experience is a good one or a bad one. I mean, from one perspective it's a good one because I'm able to just watch and (hopefully) enjoy just about any DVD I put in my player. From another perspective, it's bad since DVD production quality control could be getting worse and worse and I would never know it since my player is being more "accomodating" and therefore sheltering me from the "real" state of affairs.

Hmmmmm......

Peace.....

i feel your pain nfchapman. my roger rabbit disc was also scratched ...pretty bad too. and it was still on the hub. i've been having the scratched disc problem for a few months now and it's starting to get aggrivating. almost every disc i buy lately i have to return. and it's more aggrivating cause i'm buying them from online stores.

i've had the most problems with Buena Vista titles (bought Turner and Hooch from best buy.com and it too was scratched up pretty bad). also got The Ref on release day from DeepdiscountDVD and it was a floater.

i think Disney needs to shape up on their quality control or i'm going to start writing nasty letters to them. (just another reason why i hate Disney).

I wonder if the DVDs are "coming loose" when being shipped from distribution centers to retailers. I would imagine the boxes 'o DVDs are packed tightly but if the boxes get banged up a lot while in transit, the DVDs could get jarred loose.

Hmmm.....

Peace.....

My old Toshiba used to have problems if there was dust on the disc, but my new Toshiba played Devil's Backbone just fine with several very heavy gouges on the disc.

I kept meaning to take it back and exchange it, but I never did.

It was on the spindle in the case and wasn't loose at all, so it would have had to have happened prior to packaging.

I only worry about the scratches being so severe that it could lead to dvdrot down the line, if oxidation can cause it.

Oh, well. It's such a good movie that I wouldn't mind buying it again...
