I hate ads.
Is anyone else sick of watching these stupid ads that theaters put on before the previews? I mean like fanta,
especially, which makes me want to rip my ears off. coke, movie tickets.com. I mean I pay 8.50 to go see a movie in a theater, which isnt even a good theater. And i have to sit through all this crap before I watch a movie. If they are going to have these all ads it should be cheaper. :flush: |

Well if those ads wheren't there you'd probably be paying $15 for a matinee. Yeah the adds suck but unfortunately the only thing to do is get there 15 minutes later.

Nice try but if you continue to do that, you will get DVDs with them burnt into them with no forward feature. If you think you are clever enough to 'beat' the multibillion dollar advertising companies, think again. And yeah, like he said...you'd be paying through the nose right now to watch a movie if not for those ads. Plus, what high prices? It's still cheaper than any other form of entertainment. |

I always go to AMC and now before every movie, we have some behind the scenes thing for The Skeleton Key and then a few commericials. Usually for Coke and then something else.
Then the previews. It's not a bad thing. I really don't see why you would get annoyed. We've sat there with no noise and a blank screen before and it kinda sucks.

As it's been said before I don't mind, I'm usually listening to my ipod or something before a movie, or chatting with whatever friend or family member comes with me. I think most theatres have gotten better about putting the commercials before the start time of the movie rather than after the start time hence adding to the delay between lights going down and the movie starting.
I'd also rather watch bad commercials then just sit there blankly staring at a black screen. Also no offense, but only about 5 percent of the home theater owners actually have systems that rival that of a well run movie theater setup. For example I couldn't imagine getting the same effect of seeing or hearing the tripods from War of the Worlds on a home theatre. I value the home theatre experience as something completely divorced from that of the actual theatre experience, honestly I don't bitch too much because it's only 6 bucks here in CA, I remember back in Ohio paying almost 8 bucks for a matinee. So i can deal with some commercials, and to be honest some are pretty cool, they showed a 1 minute promo for season 2 of Battlestar Galactica, I thought that was pretty slick in all honesty.

I wouldn't mind the ads/theater promos before a movie if they would just vary them from time to time. I've seen that fucking Charlie Sheen/Jon Cryer National Amusements public service ad ("No voiceover announcers!") so many times over the past - what, two years? - that I can pretty much recite all of the dialogue from memory verbatim.
Anyone who sees more than two movies per month in a theater will know what I'm talking about here. At least recently the ads seem to be starting before the movie's scheduled run time in most cases, so the trailers start on-schedule.

You think watching them is annoying. Just try working at a theater and being the one that has to add and remove them every few weeks. Its a pain in the ass for me to do that but i guess they are keeping me where i am because of that. They can have soem good ads and some bad but i hat eit around the holidays (XMas) They had at one point 13 ads before they even got to the movie trailers on screen. The thing i don't get is that we have (and most theaters) have a digital projector pre-show running on screen for roughly 45 minutes before every show. Why can't they just add their corporate ad to that show and let the movies play on with just their movie trailers is beyond me. Everyone would basically save on money. NO need to make upa shit load of trailers and then ship out to the theaters. Just a simple disc sent to an advertising site that handles all the pre-show ads and have them add the ad to that. What doe sit cost $1 or 2 for the disc and that is all.
I love the movie experience at the theater, but when it takes 20 minutes for a show to actually show up on screen. It kind of makes you said and glad you have your own Home Theater setup at home. Oh i moved to the Soapbox area because its sort of an industry sort of related question and not about a movie but movie theaters in general.

I, and 2 friends went to see Batman Begins this weekend. We paid $17, probably $2 more than the DVD will cost when it comes out. We sat through 15 minutes of ads, with the volume pumped so much you just about need to hold your ears. Then the trailers and movie start with the volume low, the top right hand portion of the screen was out of focus, and they just can't seem to hit the center of that massive screen with the image. The idiot projectionist didn't turn the lights down far enough, so all the dark scenes had an orange hue to them. Not to mention the kid behind me who had a lot to say about the film... during it. Oh, plus my ass was killing me the rest of the day because of the hard seats. Am I the only one who has to shift ass cheeks about every 5 minutes in movie theaters?
Every time I go see movies, I feel more justified at building a kick ass home theater. Batman will look sharper, and sound better in my theater. HK has a point that if DVDs become more a revenue stream than theaters, they will add unskippable ads to the discs(some already have them). While that won't effect me, as I use an HTPC and have software that bypasses such crap, 99.9% of people don't. Guess there's no beating them(uness you have an HTPC ).The box office is having a record breaking slump at this very moment. I don't think it's an coincidence that that is happening as home theaters are becoming more popular. That and the current state of the economy.

This is a topic big on my shit list. If you say the ads don't irritate the living snot out of you, I'd question your involvement with the living.
I'm totally with Plissken on this one; there's no damn reason our future couldn't be sans movie theater. I am nowhere near that myself, and neither is most of the consumer base, but the more that Hollywood and theater owners screw us in the anus with their advertising and high prices the faster the future will get here. I'm all for the theater remaining a bastion of sound and picture unrivaled by any other experience, but it seems the industry has gone the other way and are trying to turn it into as much milking the consumer as the DVD industry. Six bucks for a movie ticket? I'd sure as hell love someone to point me in the direction of the local plex where I can spend that for a ticket and see a movie on a two story high screen complete with ball-busting sound and a comfy seat. Because to get the latter I have to spend 10 bucks a ticket and get fifteen minutes of FANTAWANTA, DON'T YOU WANTA FANTA WANTA!! Fifteen minutes of previews used to get on my nerves in the good ol' days, but now it's a relief when I see that first green rating screen. I apologize for my scathing banter, and it is not directed toward any person here at all. In fact you guys are the best place for getting out a rant like this, so I appreciate those that read it.

If anyone should be annoyed with ads, it's me. I don't have any cable or antenna for the sole reason that I can't stand commercial television, because of the ads and such. Despise it.
But the ads in the theatre? They only take a couple minutes, and they usually start before the time of the movie. I don't LIKE them, but I'm not going to go on a tirade against them. |

I don't mind one or two ads before a movie... but before War Of The Worlds there must have been 7-8 of them (that annoying Fanta one, Coke, cellphones, Fandango, god knows what else) It definately got to be a bit too much!! I liked when they had those movie trivia questions before the trailers!
I still really like going to the theater.. though it's tough to sneak in a bottle of coke during the summer.. I'll shell out for the popcorn though I always like the Trailers .. King Kong!! but I think they're going overboard with the "TV" ads!! |

You know, I'd like to see ads scrolled across the field or dropped down from the scoreboard instead of breaking up the game. I think that ad space on players jerseys would also be a good idea and is already being used in Europe. That ruins being there when there are ads every 5 minutes of play!

The thing that is really starting piss me off about DVD's is the stupid fucking "DONT PIRATE OR STEAL DVD'S" spot that appears before the movie.
I bought the god damn dvd, so stop lecturing me on the morality of burning a copy. You got my money already, up tp $30 Canadian in most cases, now I want to watch my movie and be left the fuck alone. |

I read once about an idea to computer generate ads on the game field much like they do now with the first down "lines." I'd be interested to see how that might work (not that I think it would lessen the amount of commercial breaks in any way).
