Brosnan's License to Kill Revoked

Brosnan: "One Phone Call" Ended His Career As 007

Pierce Brosnan says that he had been asked to play James Bond in a fifth film before the producers abruptly terminated negotiations. "One phone call, that's all it took," Brosnan said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The actor acknowledged that his movie career never took off until he was cast as Bond in 1995 at the age of 42. Nevertheless, he said, "It never felt real to me. I never felt I had complete ownership over Bond. Because you'd have these stupid one-liners which I loathed and I always felt phony doing them." He said that when he was fired as Bond, it felt like a "titanic jolt to the system," but that afterwards he thought, "I can do anything I want to do now. I'm not beholden to them or anyone. I'm not shackled by some contracted image."

I always thought he was a great choice for 007. Any ideas on who might be next in line as the new Bond? Who would you suggest get some offers?

Ooooo he would make an intense Bond. I can just see him talking with the Bond "babe" the same way he talked with Julia Roberts in Closer... I like his interrogation technique.

Peace...

This wasn't any real shocking news, as there had been rumors of a younger actor as Bond coming soon. But Brosnan has been my favorite Bond, even surpassing Connery in my view.

Clive Owen has been the most popular choice as the successor. Some other rumors are Daniel Craig, who has received critical acclaim for his role in Layer Cake, which comes out on DVD next week.

My personal choice I would like to see as Bond is Christian Bale.

How about Chow Yun Fat, Tony Leung, or even Andy Lau . Don't forget ass kicking Bond like Jackie Chan or Jet Li . Man, I'd pay double to see that .

Anyway, it's big shoe to fill. Brosnan got the role nailed down. The next one will be inevitably compare against him and his predecessors.

Bale has just done so many American roles in movies, that very few people have heard his actual British accent.

I guess you didn't know that Batman was played by an Englishman.

Dude, he is the new Batman. Count him out. And yes, I knew of the other's culture.

I also think Bale would be a good Bond (after seeing him as Bruce Wayne in the tuxedo, it is Bond I instantly thought of) but I realise this is as good as never going to happen...

...Roger Moore is the only English person ever to play Bond and by far the weakest (Connery Scottish, Brosnan Irish, Dalton Welsh & Lazenby Australian)

Unless you want to include David Niven's Casino Royale of course!

I personally liked Dalton in the role (no flames please as I know it's a contraversial choice) and I think Living Daylights was better than all of the Brosnan movies except Goldeneye.

Clive Owen would be fine too.

Other people I'd liked to have got the role would have been Derek Jameson, John McCrirrick, Trevor Macdonald and Steve Brookstein.

I'd like to see Ralph Finnes take a shot at 007.

I think it's time to have a woman play the role of James Bond. How does Angelina Jolie strike your fancy?

Peace...

Brosnan was a great Bond, but he was shackled with horrible scripts and mediocre directors. Only Goldeneye was any good, in my opinion, despite some cool moments in the others (mostly due to Brosnan). I wish they used him more effectively.

I too thought Dalton was excellent. His Bond had an edge that was lacking in the non-Connery films and was probably the closest to the way Flemming originally wrote the character. Unfortunately for him, years of Moore's mugging for the camera led many people to think of Bond in that manner.

How can you be MORE British when Britain=England/Scotland/Wales???

Anyways, the latest rumour I heard is that Goran Visnjic is up for the role now. He's most well known from being in E.R. and was born in Croatia!

Personally I think Adrian Paul (Highlander TV Series) would make a great James Bond! He's English, not super well known and hasn't had much of a film career. Unfortunately I think he might be a little old for the role now, at 46.

I can hear the difference between a Scottish and English accent. When I think British, the English accent comes to mind first. I can't distinguish between the Welsh and English accent easily, though.

To me, Brosnan does an excellent English accent. I've never even heard a hint of an Irish accent in most of his movie roles.

wow, i don't think i have ever heard people comment positively on Dalton's role. i thought he was a bit lame, personally, and would rank him behind Connery, Brosnan, and Moore.

I'll second that Bantam....Dalton to me was almost as bad as Lazenby. Almost.

But hey that's just my opinion....and dvdjedi, don't take this the wrong way man, but I don't think "mugging for the camera" is correct. Bond is to me: cool first, killer second, and cool third. Dalton never seemed 'cool' to me.

It depends what you are looking for. As mentioned above Dalton is the closest to the Fleming books by far. Unfortunately, after the years of Connery & Moore this wasn't what the audience was expecting (or wanting).

Many people say Brosnan is a return to form but, as mentioned before, with the exception of Goldeneye the movies have been poor. Both of Dalton's movies had a grittier edge to them. Goldeneye was a film I'd iked to have seen Dalton do.

Here in the UK Dalton's License To Kill was the first Bond film to receive a 15 cert (as opposed to the PG's previous, or "A" as they were called in the 70's)and I think I remember there having to be scenes trimmed for it to qualify as that.

Certainly Connery made the role his own, and I can certainly see why but Moore was a joke with that pathetic Karate chop and cheeseball one liners.

I'm offended no one likes the idea of Don Cheadle being he next Bond.

I mean he can play a British Irishman better than anyone!

Peace...

Would you have wanted Sammy Davis Jr. playing Matt Helm.

Roger Moore just never seemed to me to be someone who would/could kill someone at a moments notice. Moore's best film was For Your Eyes Only, partly because it wasn't a typical Moore Bond film. Watch the doc on the DVD and Moore himself says that he played Bond more ruthlessly than he usually did. And that is part of the reason that it's my 2nd favorite Bond film.

When I think of the actors who've played Bond in the films, I think:

Connery - Dashing & Dangerous (Had the charisma to woo the women & the ruthlessness to kill any who got in his way. The most physical of the Bonds.)

Lazenby - People loved Connery in the role. Unfortunately for George, he came after Connery & was probably doomed from the start no matter how good/bad he did. I personally thought he was rather wooden in his performance but could have improved if given the chance.

Moore - Gadgets & Guffaws (He had some of the coolest toys & was king of the one-liners but wasn't very intimidating. He'd rather toss around a witty pun than an evil henchman. )

Dalton - Closest to the Bond of Flemming's novels. Less charasmatic than Connery or Moore but definitely gave the impression that he'd use his Walther PPK at a moment's notice. As an avid reader of the novels, I liked his turn as Bond, although I thought the plots of his 2 films were rather weak.

Brosnan - I liked Pierce in his 4 films although (again) the plots of the last 3 were rather weak. Seemed to be a nice combo of Moore's wit & Connery's bravado.

I'm looking forward to Casino Royale and will be there Day 1 (I've seen every Bond flick in the theater since I went as a child with my parents to see The Spy Who Loved Me.)
