SamGoody and Suncoast going out of business

It seems that there are quite a few Samgoody's and Suncoast's going out of business, click this link http://home.businesswire.com/portal/...73&newsLang=en to see if one is near you. There's a Samgoody 30 miles from where I live, so I'll be hitting that place friday.

i went in a few weeks ago and picked up some figures and shirts, their deals on dvds just werent good enough yet, with how suncoasts and samgoody price things, 20percent off is the same i would pay at a best buy

side note: seems like this might belong in the deals forum

Can't say I'm sad. Both of those places were in our local mall, and they were such a rip off.

Hooray for Capitalism!

Finally, these are going by the wayside. They were terribly overpriced! You can't just keep stickin' it to people forever and expect them to come back. Come on, who actually pays MSRP or HIGHER for a new release!

They were a great place to find stuff that other stores don't stock, but at full list price it's hardly been worth it now that you can order most stuff online. I did used to love going there back in the laserdisc days because they were one of the few places that stocked them. Now about the only thing I buy there are action figures and other assorted toys. I'm kind of ticked actually because I renewed my replay card for two years last summer and now they're closing all the stores here. Plus they won't give you replay points anymore now that they're closing.

I'll hit ours in a couple weeks. I haven't bought anything in a Sam Goody since VHS.

The Media Play brach of that company is closed/ing too. The one by me has been closed for more than a month. Got some great deals.

They where a little more expensive sometimes but I shopped there because of the customer service. I'd gladdly pay a couple extra dollars for friendly and knowledgable employees.

Around where I used to live they made all the Media Plays into Sam Goodys. I thought they had done that with all of them.

I never found particularly good customer service there. I guess not bad, but really no more knowledgable than someone at Best Buy. I guess occasionally at Suncoast, but certainly not at the other two brands.

Well i shall move this to the Soapbox forum as it more suited there then in our dvd section.

I just wonder if Suncoast in the states are the same people that own Suncoast here in Canada. If so i might have to give them a look over in the coming weeks for deals

When I was 18 back in 1993 I helped set up and then worked customer service for one of the first Media Play stores in Utah. Back in the day it was great. I loved the place.

After working there for 6 months I moved and when I came back a few years later the place totally sucked. In the last few years it's been even worse and I rarely even went in--especially with the deals and ability to find obscure things online.

My buddy emailed me in Decemeber a news article from the local paper there on how it was going out of business. Tough luck.

My wife worked in another of their off shoots called On Cue in 1997. It was a cool place and the discount was pretty good (since you're paying MSRP). A few years after she left the employees came in one day and corporate was there boxing up the stock and telling them to go home. Apparently it had become a free for all and so much merchandise was going out the door due to employees they said to hell with it and closed up shop.

I'm not surprised this this happening.

Not when you have big box stores like Wal-Mart, Best Buy and to a slightly lesser extent Circuit City dominating retail sales. Also, with widespread Internet usage online retailers such as Amazon.com, Buy.com, BN.com, DeepDiscountDVD.com, etc. have done a tremendous amount of sales, too.
