Breaking Street Dates

i have recently noticed that more and more stores are breaking street dates and releasing DVDs early. My friend found "This Film is Not Yet Rated" yesterday at K-Mart and i saw "Saw III" at Target today.( i didnt get it because it was the rated foolscreen version). I thought this was illegal. Or is it for competitive edge? Does it cut down on pirates?

I think its a combination of people not paying attention/knowing about street dates and a little bit of competitive edge. I've read that if a store is caught breaking the street date, they can encur fines of something along the lines of monetary fines of each copy sold etc. Unless its a hugely successful movie (harry potter, Superman, LOTR) caliber film I doubt most studios would care or even notice if movies were released a day or 2 early. I got 24 Season 5 a week early in December at a local K-Mart. I think that was just someone not paying attention to the date. So this must mean that most stores have their new releases a week to 10 days in advance.

There is a local used exchange place by my house that sells the new releases starting on Thursday. Unfortunately they are usually 8 dollars more then what they will be sold for at Best Buy

Depending on the company you can almost predict when new releases are going to arrive at the store. Warner and Disney have gone as late as the Friday before. Fox is usually the early bird. They are usually two weeks ahead and have been three weeks ahead at times. Generally the new releases are in the store a week ahead of time.
