Brazil Criterion

Hey everyone,

Allow me to inroduce myself my name is Gary, and I love movies. I recently bought a DVD player (Samsung DVD-709) and I got Brazil Criterion on DVD. Whenever I would watch it, the movie plays fine until chapter 22 and then it freezes and my player spits it out. Same thing with the commentary. Any ideas? I'm still an amateur when it comes to DVD's so any help would be much appreciated. I figured if I had any questions you people would be the ones to go to. Thanks.

Sincerely,
Gary

Admiral,

Welcome to the board!

I don't recall reading any posts about a problem like you describe with Brazil: CE. Given the popularity of the set (I have one too, but haven't watched it yet) I would have expected to see more reports of problems if it was a widespread issue, so I have to think that the problem is either with your player or with the particular boxed set that you picked up.

I just scanned the first few responses to your player's review at www.audioreview.com and it seems that you may need to either try exchanging it for another one or getting a firmware upgrade.

You might want to check out the disk first, however. You will want to see if there is any dirt or imperfections on the disc itself. This could cause the player to stop playing and to stop recognizing the disc.

You may also want to try playing it in another player. If it works fine in another player, then it's likely that the problem is with your player.

As a stop gap measure, you might want to try fast fowarding through the part where the disc normally stops, or skipping ahead and then rewinding to just after the part where the disc normally stops.

Good luck.

As Blade mentioned, it's most likely a problem with your player. Chapter is where the layer switch occurs on Brazil Criterion. Layer switches can often cause problems on certain players.

You should contact Samsung to see if a Firmware upgrade is available for your player, as that is usually the most common solution. You may also want to see if you can play the disc on another player of a different brand to see if it's possibly a disc problem.

Good Luck

I'm sure this is old news, but in case you're holding off on buying the Criterion Edition of Brazil because you just want the movie, be aware that whoever mastered the DVD for Universal did, in fact, master the director's cut. Don't let the total running time on the case fool you. Now, I don't know if this is the DEFINITIVE director's cut, or if the Criterion Edition has even more footage. All I know is I bought my Universal copy forty-eight stinking hours before hearing about the (then) upcoming Criterion Edition. Grrrrr...

As far as I can tell, they are the same cut. The Criterion box set features a nicer transfer, however, and of course supplements galore

First I've seen both dvd's & I don't think the Universal dvd has many of the "directors cut" scenes & I know it doesn't have the Interrogation/Santa scene or the non-cloud end titles from the british cut.
And as far as the samsung dvd player goes......well you get that with crap like samsung. You should be able to return it & get a refund if it's less than 30 days from the time you bought it(depending on who you got it from). Save your money & get a Yamaha dvd-900 or a sony 6-disc dvd changer(the yamaha has a GREAT picture for under 800$ & the Sony has a ton of bells & whistles for under 600$ & a good picture as well if a little "fuzzy" for my taste).
