Infoworld Article on the Death of DVD = BAD JOURNALISM!!!
Talk about going overboard! This Sean M. Dugan character shouldn't be allowed to write for a school newspaper while spewing this kind of garbage. He claims to be a "Net Prophet" -- I bet he also predicted that Div-X would be a huge success.
![]() For those who may have missed it, here's the link: http://www.infoworld.com/articles/op...4opprophet.xml ============================================== Here was my E-mail reply to Sean M. Dugan: Your Infoworld article about the demise of DVD was not even CLOSE to reality. The DVD market will continue to grow exponentially. It is the most successful launch of any electronics technology in history. Here's a graph illustrating what I mean: http://www.ohio.net/~osvaths/DVDSales.jpg DVD is replacing VHS at several times the rate that audio CDs replaced LPs. You can very cheaply and easily record on CD-R today, and that has not affected the audio CD industry at all. Why? It's simple, ... because $10 to $20 for a high-quality audio CD from your favorite artist is a small price to pay. It's simply not worth the effort to pirate. The same is true for DVD, ... $15 to $30 for the highest quality picture and sound for your favorite movies is also a small price to pay. It's simply not worth the effort to pirate. At every store I frequent, the DVD section is growing rapidly. There are almost always more people browsing it than in the VHS section. The studios understand this well. DVD is here to stay. The DeCSS hack will do absolutely nothing to change that. ============================================== If you would like to provide feedback to Sean about this article, he can be reached at: sean_dugan@infoworld.com It is incumbent on all of us in the Internet DVD community to counter these types of attacks on the format with education and positively focused consumer feedback. VHS is dead. Laserdisc is dead. Long live DVD. (add to that, "The DeCSS hack doesn't mean squat to the future of DVD.") ![]() |

Dugan-Net Prophet?
How about Net-Moron? His arguments against the DVD business model make no sense at all. It is obvious that he lacks any logical reasoning skills. To say that DVDs are a bad business model because they can be copied is ludicrous. If that were the case no studio would produce videotapes either. After all tapes are very easy to copy and have been for many years. Have any studios stopped producing videotapes because of copying concerns? NO. Also, Dugan should do some research before he writes his dribble. Granted most of Spielberg's hits are not on DVD yet, but has Dugan heard of Saving Private Ryan? It is clear that Dugan has little to no talent. Instead of being honest with himself and changing careers, he has decided that his only chance at surviving is to try to be controversial. He'll be gone long before the DVD. |

Hey, remember when the computer software company went bellyup because it was so easy to pirate games? Yeah, there was a time, when you could walk into any mall in America and see at least 5 or 6 stores that sold at least some software. Now, thanks to those nasty pirates, they don't even have software anymore, and those malls are now lined with even more Starbucks' & My Favorite Muffins. I miss the old days of videogames, tax software and CD-ROM porn, but now I guess I'll just kick back, whittle some, and remember how good life was, before software pirates detroyed it all...oh, wait a minute, that didn't happen...

Wait! Aren't the modems in our computers used for downloading the latest game that we can purchase for $10 and have a 5 day playing period starting from install? Then it's just like $3.50 for another 3 day playing period. This way the companies know what we're buying and when. Though these games don't really support 3D cards, lack manuals, and are just pretty much inferior to standard games.
Oh no, that's not true. But I can't believe the game companies haven't thought of this as a way to combat the piracy that's just absolutely 'killing' the gaming industry. I wonder why nobody else has ever tried this sort of approach for other digital sowftware? It's bound to be highly succesful. ![]() ------------------ Floyd is pink. http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Lot/3924/ |

CDs. Oh yeah. I remember those. I bought about 400 of them, because their sound was so good, when compared to LP or tape. Hmmm. Seems like I still buy them, even now... Maybe they haven't gone away? No, that can't be, because I could choose to dupe them off of existing CDs. They must have gone under, because of the piracy.
[Sarcasm OFF] None of the CDs that I've burned have material that I haven't bought first. I've made a few (perfectly legal) "Best Of" CDs, and that's it. Although, if the price of CDs keeps going up, using MP3s as a music source is going to become more and more appealing. Taxi DDS#42 |

You guys are being way too tough on this guy. He is so logical, and so brilliant, that he's going to get a very high paying job at LucasFilms, where his brand of logic will be fully appreciated
