Criterion, Anchor Bay, Etc . . .

Does anyone have a list of production houses (not sure if that's the right term) that make DVDs? I've got websites for the obvious like Criterion and Anchor Bay, but does anyone have a fairly complete list of web addresses? Also, which studios have started doing their own DVD work (Newline?).
Apologies for ignorance, and and thanks in advance

While on the subject of Criterion and Anchor Bay. Criterion's prices are a total unrealistic! C'mon, there stuff is often not any better than Universal CE's or New Line platinum Series stuff! And what's this bullshit of "limited Editions" from Anchor Bay - I missed out on the Army of Darkness CE 'cos of this shit limited production policy! Give me a friggin' break!

Criterion is a small company, not a huge multi-national corporation. They have to have a higher profit margin per disc than Universal, Columbia, or New Line.

As for limited editions, you just have to be more on the ball. I'm sure you can find one on Ebay. Again, Anchor Bay is a smaller operation, I'm sure it makes sense when producing a more expensive double-disc set to try to ensure that all copies sell.

I'm more upset about Artisan's practice of making certain titles only available in box sets. I want Breaking the Waves, but I sure didn't want to have two other disc's to get it.

You may also be able to find the Army of Darkness LE at the real world stores of Sam Goody or Suncoast. Make some phone calls, ya never know . . . I bought mine in January from Sam Goody, but there was another copy here in Spokane at Suncoast. Of course, the price for remaining copies is going up, I paid almost $50 with tax! Doh! Anywho, good luck DVDaddict

Criterion discs, for all the money they cost, are worth the money. I got the "Brazil" DVD set at a local place for $59. I also got "Armageddon" for $29 at Best Buy one day.

Anchor Bay did the limited editions for "Halloween" and "Army Of Darkness" just for the true hardcore fans of that film. So by producing less copies of the limited editions, they please the fans and they make more money so they can buy the rights to other good films or just make more DVDs.

Okay, I agree re the "Brazil" and "Armageddon" Box Sets. I've got both at extremely good "pre-order" prices at the time off the Net. BUT! I live in S Africa, so i can't be "on the ball" re those damn limited editions, ala "Army of Darkness" from Anchor Bay. These things are'nt just a phone call away for me! So, if my Mastercard is a bit maxed at the time of a LE's release, it's tough for me, I miss out - aaargh! Plus, I have to pay for these disks with a currency that is worth shit, ie, seven times weaker than the US$ !! So, I'm paying thru my neck for my love of movies. Anyone prepared to go buy a copy for me from eg, Suncoast, then I'll pay 'em back and pay for postage - better yet, anyone want to sell me a really good condition 2nd hand one for a great price, OR, does anyone want to DONATE one to a poor S African?? OR, does anyone know if Anchor Bay are going to be re-releasing it again soon?

DVDAddict,

Do what every other person outside of the U.S. and Canada does. Go to EBay and buy it off through auction. It may cheaper and less of a headache. I missed out on the Limited Editions and frankly am glad I did. I bought the regular editions of Halloween and Army of Darkness. I love them. But I am getting the LE of Supergirl. Best underrated Comic Book movie ever.

DVDAddict,

You may also want to try contactinc Anchor Bay directly. Who knows? They may have some means to get you what you want. Or else, comments from more people like you could persuade them to make another batch.

I didn't know Army of Darkness was a LE either. I lucked into finding one at a Sam Goody near my home in Eatontown, NJ. Paid full retail for it, but at that point, I couldn't be choosy. And if I had never found it? Well, regrets, I've had a few. I could've bought Yahoo stock at the IPO. Hell, I could've bought Microsoft stock at the IPO. Sometimes you miss out on a good thing. Don't dwell on it, or else you might miss another good thing coming your way.

For a copy of this script, send three dollars (American) to the address on your screen...

Sorry about my American-centric response DVDAddict, I'm still getting used to international communications via this forum.

Anyway, about contacting Anchor Bay: When I contacted them by email, I did get a response, but it was only one sentence concerning closed captioning. Just affirming that Evil Dead II will have closed captioning. BUT, when I called in January about the Army of Darkness LE, I talked to a real person (a very nice and curteous women) not an annoying machine. She checked to make sure they had no more stock, and even called me back to give me the bad news. But manigrasso may be right. If enough people request it, I don't see why they couldn't put out more copies. Hey, I wouldn't mind. My disc with the "Men Behind the Army" documentary won't play properly. Still trying to find out if it's the disc or my player...
So my advice would be to call them directly. I'm not sure how 1-800 (toll-free) numbers work with international calls, but you can contact Anchor Bay toll free at

1-800-233-3738

or (if necessary) email them using an address from the page below.

BTW, where do South Africans buy their DVDs? Do you have chain video stores, or order on-line or what? Just curious
Hope this helps
