Playstation 2

What impact do you think the Playstation 2 will have on DVD acceptance and market?

Briefly, the Playstation 2 is Sony's latest game console, just released in Japan and should be available in North America for the Christmas season. The graphics are comparable or better than the Sega Dreamcast and current PCs. In addition to playing games written for it, is has the capability to play games written for the original Playstation, audio CDs and video DVDs.

I have not seen any reputable statements as to the quality of the DVD output or the backwards compatibilty. (Although the current word is it is limitted to Region 2 DVDs.)

If the unit were priced and had a picture comparable to an entry level DVD player would you buy it? Would you recommend it others?

I think that it will give the DVD market in Japan a huge boost. Most people in Asian don't see the advantages of DVD over VCD. VCD's are a lot cheaper, more plentiful, and ..well, have lot's o' pirated stuff.

In America and Europe, it will increase the "installed base" in homes that are capable of playing DVD's. I think it will give many people a chance to view DVD's who otherwise might not jump in earlier.

I hear that it will be priced arround $300us, so I'm eagerly awaiting the offical US release. I was also thinking about asking my dad to pick one up when he starts flying to Tokyo. Sometimes having a pilot for a dad has advantages That being said, the price, considering the features, doesn't seem that unreasonable. Working for a consumer eletronics retailer will definately help with the cost tho.

I'm rambleing again...

I just want to know for sure....Playstation 2 is going to have both DTS and DD sound capability, correct? I've heard conflicting rumours.

Just digital outputs. Rumors also claim that it skips, overheats, locks on layer change, etc. We'll see if they can fix it by the US/UK release. My gut feeling is: if you want a DVD player, buy one. Sony is trying to do too much with this one console. You can bet it will be a master of none...

I read an article that spending on DVD will surpass that of VHS by 2003.
By the end of the decade,DVD will have a larger market than VHS.

If sales are strong as Sony claims,by selling a million Units in a week it can be good for DVD but it will depend on if those units are percieved as DVD players and not game machines.
