My last insider story on DIVX

Think back to last February, when DIVX was still going thru it's death throes,my company Tweeter Inc,had just been approached by CC and Dick Sharp himself to take a meeting to see if they couldn't convince Tweeter to carry DIVX.

Now we(at my company)already knew that our company position was that DIVX was a terribly stupid, overly complicated cluster-fuck of an idea, and that was from the more positive people at corporate level.

Everyone at my branch of Tweeter wished that they could be a fly on the wall at that meeting, because of course,Jeff Stone, the CEO of our company, turned them down, and shortly thereafter bought out DOW electronics in Texas, and then ordered DOW to send all DIVX products back to the pits of Hell from hence they came.

Well, who should come walking into my store out of all the 75 stores we are part of,than the man himself,Jeff Stone.

So I managed to get a quick interview with the man who gave a wedgie to Liberty Valance.

Snark:"Jeff, all of us anti-DIVX enthusiasts out there want to know what happened at that historic meeting.Could you tell us?"

Jeff Stone:"Well Snark,I sat there listening to Dick Sharp give a very detailed and professional presentation, and I kept trying to seem interested, but after so much smoke and mirrors,I finally threw up my hands and said:"How is this in any way better than DVD?"

Snark:"What was his response?"

Jeff Stone:"He really didn't have one,it seemed as though he thought that everyone should instantly understand the benefits. And when you questioned his logic,he became somewhat agitated."

Snark:"Was it's failure tied to the fact that he was so egocentric that he thought he could change people's buying habits?Or is that an oversimplification?"

Jeff Stone:"No that's what every one in the industry thinks, and I think it's pretty much on the money."

I know that isn't much, but he was only at the store for about half an hour,so I got as much out of him as I could.

Except for one other thing,I mentioned the Net reaction to his announcement of the aquisition of DOW,and the order to remove all DIVX products from all their stores.

Jeff Stone:"I was shocked at the reaction to that(announcement)I was just following our company policy, which was NO DIVX at any of our stores, and suddenly it was all over the place."
"Although I'm not sorry at the perception that we were making a statement."

So that's it,my last word on DIVX and any insider news on it's demise,I have been proud to bring you, during the last year, the best insider dirt that I could sweep up,but that's it there ain't no more, and if you're like me,and I know I am,you've probably had enough.

Snark continues to dominate.

Awesome Snark, thanks for that. The Rock may be a sore winner and unsportsmanlike, but whenever there's a chance to slam Divx and point out just how much it sucked, The Rock wants to revel in it.

Oh, I forgot to add...a few weeks ago, a friendwho knew I was following the divx debacle gave me a few divx discs. Don't know where he got them. One of them, appropriately enough given Circuit City's high hopes for the product, was Great Expectations. Maybe this is a more appropriate title than 48 Hrs! Let's face it, not only did CC have Great Expectations, but the flick is a remake of a classic, just like divx! Anc could pale in the face of the original...just like divx!
So this must be what it's like to drain the lizard on the graves of your enemies...aah...I feel so relieved...

After Divx tanked, a bought a copy of BASEketball to use a coaster at work. It's about the most use it's hard in its lifetime, I'm sure.

I have to admit, I got a good measure of "guilty" pleasure out of comparing the old unopened version of The Abyss divx disc with the brand spanking new super-duper SE DVD that I got in the mail, a couple of days ago, for about $23. Only a few times more than a traditional rental or a few "re-viewing" fees of a divx disc.

Life is sometimes sweet.
