TRON Laserdisc.....
I'm thinking of bidding on the SE laserdisc Box set of TRON On E-Bay & I was wondering if it is worth it?
I am a big fan of the movie & I have the dvd but some of the extras on the box just look so damn good! What does anyone who has it or seen it think? ------------------ -Dougpirana "all rightyou medieval(primitive) screw heads Listen up! Funny story about my purchase of the "Tron" box set:
I was standing in the laser section at Tower, checking out the big sale they were having, when I (almost literally) ran into another customer. I was checking out the "Tron" box and he was looking at "Interview with the Vampire." He commented that the "Tron" set was great, in fact he had worked on the film transfer, and told me about some of their late-nighters and arguments over color balance in getting the transfer right. That made my decision for me. I asked him if he had seen "Interview," and he said yes, but that the image in the theater had been dark and murky, and he was concerned about how watchable the laserdisc would be. I told him that I had had the same experience in the theater, but had rented the laser before purchasing and the disc was really quite good. (I wondered at the time if some of the prints had just been too dark or if some theater setups weren't up to the challenge of properly displaying the film.) We both walked out with our purchases. Never underestimate the power of word-of-mouth. The "Tron" laserdisc box set is a fantastic one, and I don't see Disney porting it to DVD any time soon. The supplementary materials are extensive and very interesting. The deleted scenes include one that I can't believe was ever even considered a possibility by Disney, much less completed and nearly used. I think it's described as the "morning after" scene on the disc, and deservedly so. Since you're a big fan of the movie, by all means bid on the set. You'll probably get it for less than I paid--I think around $75 at the time, but I'm not positive. How does the DVD look? I'm wondering if it's worth picking up to have a better copy of the movie itself. ------------------ Wesly Moore ------------------ weslymoore@aol.com |

I hate it when that happens!
![]() Looks like there's another copy on eBay, auction ending today, and the bid is currently up to about $86. I didn't realize they were going for so much. ------------------ Wesly Moore ------------------ weslymoore@aol.com |

Yeah, that's one of the bad things about ebay, the folks who will do just about any sneaky thing to win, rather than playing fair. To avoid this, I always closely watch the end of auctions where I really want to win, just in case somebody tries to out sneak me. Sometimes, though, even that doesn't work.

What I tend to do (with the auctions I MUST have), is near 10 minutes to the auctions end, open 2 windows. In one I fill out a bid, usually 5 dollars more than what I have it at currently, and then hit review bid, fill out my name and pw, but don't hit place bid. In the other window, I refresh the auction every minute or so, watching to see if someone is going to try to screw me. If someone does, I wait until 20-30seconds are left and place the bid in the other window, and I've screwed the screwer.

WOW! That was quite a drama to say the least.
I was going to do as you guys said & open two windows & lay in wait for a jerk(as it were) to show his hand.....18 minutes before the auction's end MY CONNECTION SHUTS DOWN!!! AOL sucks! AOL is just CLOGGED with users because it takes me 16 minutes to get back on..........it's a conspiracy I tell you! So I get on E-Bay with 33 seconds to spare but it turns out I didn't have to because no one bid higher than 127.00........ouch! The last bidder was 20 minutes or so before. NEVER AGAIN........Hmmm what's that??I always wanted one of th...... ------------------ -Dougpirana "all right you primitive screw heads Listen up! " |

Well, since we've started talking about auction tactics, why not just decide exactly how much you're willing to bid and put that down? This way you don't lose your head in a bidding war and you don't pay more than you want.
Other things to try are other auctions (Yahoo has one, and so does Amazon) as the less popular auction sites can sometimes have less "motivated" buyers. Also, ebay has auction websites for different countries (UK, Australia, Germany). If you watch your currency conversions and have friends/acquaintences in other countries you might be able to get what you want that way. Finally, you might try www.mysimon.com to see if any retailers (it lists auctions too) have the LD you're looking for available for sale. Good luck. The Tron DVD has not gotten the highest marks for video/audio quality if I remember and except for the trailer there are no special features to speak of. Still I'm happy with mine. Of course I only paid about $10 for it, and I'm sure the Spec. Ed. DVD won't be out for a while. ------------------ -David |

Yeah, what Wesly said. There is a difference between what I am willing to pay, and what I can pay, and what I WANT to pay. It's the worst when you've got a good bid in on something, and it's there for most of the auction. Then somebody comes in at the last minute and bids that up, even over your highest bid. So, maybe I COULD pay $50 for something, but I'd like to pay $30, so that is why I proxy bid at, and it's actually at a bid of like $15 or so for most of the auction. But if somebody snipes it at the last minute for $31, I want to be able to bid $35 to protect my $30 bid.
I guess it's all part of the fun of Ebay. I've lost several auctions that I was the high bidder on for 4+ days, only to be sniped at that last minute. I hate that. ------------------ Taxi DVDFile.Com Moderator |

ebay warning, though it worked to my advantage:
When watching the prices, make sure you don't keep an eye on the price by the main screen, the one that shows you 50 items at a clip, the high bid and the time left in the auction. You've got to keep refreshing onto that item's single screen. The prices between the two screens could vary. I'll give you my example. I saw a bid on a portable Panasonic DVD player for only $550. Well, I'm a commuter and I want one of those puppies for the train ride, so I bid $650 (never saw them retail less than $800, even online). My high bid became $610, BUT the main screen never changed beyond $550. If the person who bid $550 was watching the results, but only by that screen, he/she would be under the impression they were still the high bidder, when they weren't. I'm not losing sleep over it or anything , but just wanted to pass that word of warning along to the rest of you. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a train to catch... |

One of the most intesting things I learned from the supplementary materials was that the vast majority of the effects work was done traditionally, not with (early, primitive) CGI.
It's a great set! I'm glad you're happy with it. It is too bad Disney isn't more aggressively producing SEs for their DVD titles. ------------------ Wesly Moore ------------------ weslymoore@aol.com |
