Looks like those Hong Kong pirates are at it again. Bootleg DVD versions of the Indiana Jones Trilogy have begun to appear on Ebay, we assume mastered from laserdiscs (here's a link, but don't expect it to stay alive for long). It was only a matter of time. Now if Paramount and Lucasfilm could just get their act together...

YES! If the industry is
so scared of bootlegging and what not, then just release your movies at an acceptable price and it's pretty much a non-issue. After the Matrix came out in theaters, there was massive amounts of sharing of it on the internet with an even decent copy (for the time) that was rumored to have been smuggled out by a sound person or something. It was all over and all the rage. I admit I even had a copy. Then the DVD came out and I got it imediately. And you know what? For such a popular movie (especially with the more geeky tech crowd that knows how to downlaod movies), there's virtually nothing heard about illegal copies of The Matrix. No highly sought after bootlegs (*cough* SW!), no big trading of VCD's of it on the net, no pirating of it virtually at all. Gee, I wonder why? Hmmm, spend anywhere from 4 hours to days downloading a crappy copy off the net that eats up lots of hard drive space, spend $40 and up on some inferior imported bootleg, or waste my money on a crappy wears-out-as-I-watch-it VHS tape?! Why, when I can buy a damn fine quality DVD for $15 that doesn't wear out and that I can play in my DVD player, computer, or laptop?
It's been said before and I'll say it again:
If you provide quality at an affordable price, people will buy it. Period.
Now if only the industry would figure this out...
